Xinjiang is one of the area in the world i visited where i could take many pictures of local people without any problem. Like in Somaliland, Danakil, or Indonesia, it is sometimes in the muslim countries that you can take the most of pictures of local women... far from many imagine!

Market day in Dimeka, girls wear the best clothes and decorations, as boys are around! Only in Ethiopia i've found this mix of colors. Girls start to wear bras. some as they are now christians, some as they use it as a fashion thing. 
One week after i was in Ethiopia, Steve Mc Curry was there for the first time in the country. I think he liked the place!

The 200000 inhabitants of the southern tribes are considered «behind the times » by Addis. They are moved by force, oppressed, put in jail, and some are even killed. 50 deaths occurred in Maji, 11 in Dima, 5 in Koka the last few weeks, including women and children.

Surma or Suri (as they call themselves) are sedentary pastoral people living in south west of Ethiopia, on the western bank of the Omo river. These breeders tribal groups have a cattle-centred culture. They breed their cattle, mostly cows, on their traditional lands, located in the Omo Valley. The economy of the Suri is based on breeding and agriculture. They grow cabbage, beans, yams, tobacco and coffee. Cows are tremendously important in Suri culture. On the picture:
In a filthy clinic, Balto has his left leg in a bamboo split that serves as a cast.  His family and his cows have come to keep him company.  He is lying on the ground, surrounded by fodder for the animals and by a stifling smoke coming from the fire that his wife is using to cook. 
 “I was walking peacefully in my field when soldiers began shooting at me for no reason… I was shot with a bullet in my knee.  I was lucky, that day 11 people were killed and the soldiers threw four of their bodies off a bridge.  They were eaten by hyenas, we only found their bones…”

For few years, Ethiopian government is carrying out a major plan of modernization and industrial development in the Omo Valley; roads, Gibe dams, on the Omo River. Surma tribe shoulder with scarifications, Kibbish, Ethiopia. The scarifications are part of the seduction in the Omo tribes. They use a spine from a tree to pull the skin, and cut it with a razor blade. The razor blade is shared, so you can imagine the consequences... The people must not show the pain, and do not show it when the scarifications is made on their body.

Dassanech elder, between Omorate and Turkana lake, Ethiopia. The Dassanech tribe has seen giant pumps coming in Omo river to irrigate the foreign plantations around. They do not want to move from their land, and start to fight with the ethiopian army. Last week, they killed a woman from Arba Minch to tell the authorities they were not joking...

Hana Mursi,south Ethiopia, in the only "hotel" available. In fact a brothel. As thousands of workers are sent in the Omo area by governments for giant plantations, prostitutes are also coming, and start to transmit AIDS and hepatitis to the local tribes. I met a local doctor who has started to test the tribes, and the first results are catastrophic... As the tribes still make scarifications as body decorations, sharing used razor blades, you can imagine what happens.
The girl on the picture asks 20 us dollars for a night, or 5 us dollars for 15 minutes. The price of life is Omo valley...

Mursi woman tribe, Omo Ethiopia. Since few months, Mursi have been taken away from their traditional territories. As they only live with cattle and sorgo, they start to have major problem with food.

In remote south Ethiopia,in Omo valley, Karo and Hamer tribes still practise ritual infanticide: if the first tooth appears in the upper jaw, instead of the lower, the child becomes mingi, and this applies to the baby teeth and the adult teeth when the kids are 7 or 8.
If a "mingi" kid is kept in the village by the mother, elders believe droughts, famines and diseases will come in the community, so they kill the babies...

Mursi have a lot of imagination to decorate themselves! They loved the magazine, but i think my driver loved it much more!
The Mursi (also called Murzu tribe) is the most popular tribe in the southwestern Ethiopia's lower Omo Valley, 100 km north of the Kenyan border.

Lake Besseka located near Metahara has been growing in size and causing problems on the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railroad . It has also inundated some area in the sugarcane plantation and grazing areas in the neighborhood. The water of the Lake is highly saline. A scheme aimed at controlling the rising level of the lake and to reclaim the inundated farmland and grazing area is being implemented.
According to the plan the lake is to be pumped to the Awash River and the lake level will be controlled so as not to affect the railway track and the highway.
No clear indication existed for a long time, why these two lakes kept growing.

I give you my kid

I met this elder in the Gada ceremony in Karrayyu tribe, Ethiopia. i met him again on the market. He came to me and asked me to take his kid: he has not enough money to educate him. "Bring it to your country, he'll much more happy than here..". He was not joking, as people there have more and more problems to live.I explained him that a foreign kid cannot enter France etc etc, but he was not convinced. Karrayyu people are very proud, it may not have been easy for him to ask for this...
