The new G+ has me finally getting around to sorting through some images on here, making albums and getting organized. I came across this one, which was one of the very first images I shared on G+, and I just smiled. He's a little older now... aren't we all. Happy Friday everyone. Enjoy your weekend and maybe make a picture or two... with a camera or maybe with a giant pencil.

So I heard from a certain scavenger queen that it was someone's birthday...
Happy birthday +Alan Shapiro
#AlanShapiroBirthdayStyle
I had the pleasure of meeting Alan and getting thrown out of an Asian supermarket all in the same evening. Good times. It's fun to meet photographers who are skilled in their craft but what I enjoy more is connecting with photographers who really appreciate the power of a photograph...the power to tell a story... the power to move us... the power to make us think. The power of the camera in the hands of a skilled photographer is incredible. Cartier-Bresson once said, "I think everything is interesting... but at the same time you can't just photograph everything you see. There are some places where the pulse beets more." Look through Alan Shapiro's portfolio and you'll see he finds those places.

Do you know what I love about photography? It's never the same day twice. One day it's watching the glow on mountain peaks at the start of a new day, another it's a one light portrait. Then some days it's corrugated sheet metal with three lines that catches my eye...

Wow! The power of the camera in the hands of a creative photographer.
Looking at these images I am reminded of something Paul Strand once said - "It is one thing to photograph people. It is another to make others care about them by revealing the core of their humanness."

Cough! Cough!... disturbed some dust there as I poked around the archives. This one's from last summer on a shoot with +Ian McGillvrey and +Wayne Simpson ... my D800 had a wee bit of an accident not long after I shot this scene. Maybe that had something to do with me not getting around to processing images from that shoot until now! TGIF folks and I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Last week I took on the "Something From Nothing" exercise put together by Sam and Darwin of oopoomoo (http://oopoomoo.com/). I urge you to take up the challenge yourself. Creative photography is not about filling your basket with low hanging fruit. I love travelling, be it around the beautiful Province of Alberta or half way around the world, and creating photographs of the people and places I see. Travelling is fun because the experiences are fresh and what I see is new to my eyes. What kind of images, though, could I create with the stuff I live with everyday? I challenged myself to create images all within 10 paces of my computer and all within 1 hr. You can see what I created at the link below...

It was suggested to me recently by a great NY photographer to explore my vision of the world in B&W. He said I would be amazed at how working in B&W would transform me. I've been experimenting lately, learning a lot and having a blast in the process.
This image was taken last Fall in Arizona when I was going through a tough time in my photography. I used a little photography exercise suggested by a friend of giving my images titles before pressing the shutter to help me better capture essence and tell story. I titled this one "Tulips".

Captured recently on a lovely slow drive on an overcast morning in Banff National Park.
"Slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast - you also miss the sense of where you are going and why" - Eddie Cantor
Speed is an addictive attitude to life. The most fascinating people I have met in my life aren't living theirs at a frantic pace.

Wonderful overcast conditions in Banff National Park on a recent visit highlighted the character of the mountains. The air was crisp but not too cold and the smell of the pines was intoxicating.
It isn't the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it's the pebble in your shoe

It's Friday so I'll save the moody mountain images for next week and go with a cheery colourful image I got around to processing yesterday. I opened up the archives (cough... cough... sorry about all the dust) which contained images from a trip to Italy last year and spent the day, if only in my mind, in Venice. This one is from the colourful island of Burano.

I was in Calgary Fri/Sat so I took the opportunity to go for a night shoot with friends +Royce Howland and +John Fujimagari . This an image of a sculpture in Calgary outside the new Bow building. Just like my wonderful country, the image is a multicultural mix - it's of a sculpture called Wonderland by Barcelona based designer Jaume Plensa, with a Dutch tilt technique by a Canadian photographer using a Japanese camera.

To my Calgary friends -
I'm off down south on Hwy 2 later this aft. Photography is not the prime reason for the trip but I am looking to shoot two specific ideas. The first is a night cityscape of the Calgary skyline and the second is I'm planning on heading out to Lake Louise in the am to photograph the pond hockey tournament there... Oh Canada!
Anybody have favourite Calgary skyline vantage points? I know a few of the common ones but I'm always interested in trying something new.
Cheers
Pete
