❝ The detectors were sold for up to $62,000 each, but had no working components... He claimed that his devices could detect drugs, suspicious persons and explosives. ❞
Really??? I'd love to have heard THAT conversation. "Uh yeah, detects bombs and drugs. And when a suspicious person walks by it'll like, beep. Anyways I can't show you how it works and that'll be 62 thousand dollars."
At least 20 countries and the UN accepted the offer.

In 1994 America's violent crime began a steep and steady decline.
It has continued to fall with each passing year, and is still falling today.
But an overwhelming majority of Americans mistakenly believe crime is getting worse ever since a sharp and inexplicable spike in this perception back in 2002.
Most Americans Believe Crime in U.S. Is Worsening

Way to go, Republicans.
I'm writing Paul's name on the ballot this November and then never voting again. There's no point legitimizing this facade.
Before the formal roll call of the states, Nevada led an effort to nominate Paul from the floor. Paul delegates submitted petitions from a majority of delegates from six states - Nevada, Minnesota, Iowa, Oregon, Alaska and the Virgin Islands - to put his name forward.
Under old rules, submitting signatures from five states should have been enough to put Paul up for a nomination vote. But the convention secretary rejected the petitions and GOP leaders changed the rules at the last minute to require eight states to nominate from the floor.

The era of digital medicine just got one step closer to reality. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has for the first time approved a digestible device — a sand-particle sized microchip that can be embedded in drugs to monitor patients’ response to treatment.

How To Talk to People Who Are In Wheelchairs
(This post was first published August 2nd of last year, when few people were following me. I thought I would repost and update it today, with a picture.)
One of the things I notice when I am in my #wheelchair is that many adults have difficulty knowing exactly what to say or how to act with someone who is in a wheelchair. Sometimes I notice inadvertent, side-glances; people who don't glance directly at me, but will furtively look at me and then look away, as though they're afraid of being caught staring.
I think that it is important to note that while you may be curious, some good general tips are as follows.
Tip 1. If you are curious and want to look at my wheelchair, please openly look at me, as you would look at any other able-bodied adult, and make eye contact. This is much less hurtful t... more »

http://www.webmd.com/balance/features/how-male-female-brains-differ
Fascinating. "Male brains contain about 6.5 times more gray matter -- sometimes called 'thinking matter" -- than women. Female brains have more than 9.5 times as much white matter, the stuff that connects various parts of the brain, than male brains. That's not all. "The frontal area of the cortex and the temporal area of the cortex are more precisely organized in women, and are bigger in volume," Geary tells WebMD. This difference in form may explain a lasting functional advantage that females seem to have over males: dominant language skills."

What the hell is going on? Police shoot at women and children. What is this? Have they lost their mind? The message is clear. We cannot get together to protest or we will be shot. I fear for my childs future.

One of the interesting things about human interest is that 13 people can die in a single-vehicle pickup truck accident, and yet no one really notes it. Meanwhile, 12 people dying in a movie theater will be remembered for a long time. I'm not saying this is wrong, just that it's interesting what we consider to be notable. We expect people to die while driving, but not while watching a movie. We do, however, commonly watch movies in the back seats of cars.

Ancient Love. “These two skeletons from the Neolithic period have been discovered by archaeologists near Mantua in Italy and are beleived to be young lovers due to the presence of all the teeth. The Location of their eternal embrace was just 25 miles south of Verona, the city where Shakespeare’s love story Romeo and Juliet was set.”

A great find for all you ladies in the bay area looking to share a bedroom with a middleaged stranger!
$500 / 1500ft² - Temporary housing available - Female Preferred (hayes valley)
53 year old, 420 friendly man.
I'll share my three room Pullman Victorian preferably w/ a female.
I've been in this house since 1989 and money is kind of tight at this point.
I could use some extra $ so that I can fix the house up a little bit more.
The place is already pretty trick & I want to keep it that way.
This house is quite small.
Understand that I'm not soliciting women.
To be sure, it's only got ONE bedroom, that we'd be sharing, platonically.
We'll see just where it stands once we've got a chance to talk in person & we'll go from there.

A full giga-bit connection and Google's support
This is going to be major. Google says it's an experiment to see what people'd do with a 1GB internet connection, but it probably also has something to do with ISPs crying for content providers like Google and Netflix to pay for their services. Apparently, their real freaked out (read the article).
This is going to be seriously cool, though. They'll probably innnovate a whole bunch and might even think of operating a carrier service - an amazing boon to Android ( and maybe even iOS ;-> ) by getting rid of the stupid carriers available right now and pushing down "Vanilla" phones' pricing a lot. What do you think?

I'd be really surprised if it could be played, and sounds good (ignore the timing beats obviously).
If you do attempt to play it, and it turns out well, do let me know! :)

This powerful video was created by film maker Brandon Fibb. It features the words of Neil deGrasse Tyson, taken from his recent testimony before Congress about re-igniting our economy, innovation, and national ambition through exploration of space.
I heartily agree with these sentiments. (video is roughly 3 mins long)

SDO's Ultra-high Definition View of 2012 Venus Transit
Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun's atmosphere, magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth's atmospheric chemistry and climate. SDO provides images with resolution 8 times better than high-definition television and returns more than a terabyte of data each day.
On June 5 2012, SDO collected images of the rarest predictable solar event--the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. This event happens in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years. The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117.
The videos and images displayed here are co... more »

The world isn't flat and no one ever thought it was.
I don't know where that myth came from, but here's a story from 1357 that offers a rare glimpse of what people in medieval times actually thought about the size and shape of our world:
I have often thought of a story I heard when I was young, of a worthy man from our country who, once upon a time, went to see the world.
He [traveled far to the east,] passed India, and passed many islands beyond India, where there are more than 5,000 islands. He girdled the globe, traveling so far by land and sea that he found an island where he heard his own language being spoken—for he heard a man working a plough say such words to his oxen as he had heard men say to oxen in his own land when they were at the plough.
He marveled greatly, for he did not understand how this could be. But after hearing that marvel he... more »

Did you know Ancient Romans had fast-food restaurants?? Because they totally did. They were called thermopolia, and they dotted street corners in big cities throughout the empire.
Their menus featured delicious-sounding pre-prepared meals like garlic cheese, honey mushrooms, greenbeans in cumin, and cheese cake (not to be confused with cheesecake). Their customers could dine there or take it to go.
Here's a cool 360° panorma of Placidus's perfectly preserved Pompeian 'polia: http://www.360cities.net/image/ostia-antica-thermopolium-of-via-di-diana-italy

Summer Swimming Warning - Secondary drownings make up 5 percent of overall drownings in children and teens. ”There is no great data for adults."
The lag between the time water enters the lungs and begins to cause problems can range from one to 48 hours. “Because onset can be rapid, it is not known whether there are predictable warning signs.” As a result, anyone who experiences an episode of near-drowning should be evaluated in an emergency department and “possibly observed for 24 hours,”..
