In the spirit of reviving everyone's Google+ streams for a few days, here's a deliciously cheap sushi meal from Vancouver. Oh, how I miss Vancouver sushi.

Oh hi there, new Google+.
I keep saying that Masonry layouts are bad for text, yet here we are.
Perhaps this will encourage more media sharing, though.

It occurs to me that the recent +Bitcoin price curve is not unfamiliar.

Will Google+ ever overtake Facebook or Twitter? Was Instagram an overpriced acquisition? Would a flying shark beat a jetpacked grizzly?
Some things we just can't do anything but talk about them. With +Bitcoin, you can put your money where your mouth is. Convinced it's a bubble? Go short it. Think it'll dominate the world's economy? Go buy some. Unsure but love the idea? Sit back and watch.
But please, stop preaching to me about how it's a Ponzi scheme and I'm a gullible fool for thinking anything else.

Aaron Swartz's partner shares her last moments with Aaron and why she believes he died.
Excerpt: "I believe Aaron’s death was caused by exhaustion, by fear, and by uncertainty. I believe that Aaron’s death was caused by a persecution and a prosecution that had already wound on for 2 years (what happened to our right to a speedy trial?) and had already drained all of his financial resources. I believe that Aaron’s death was caused by a criminal justice system that prioritizes power over mercy, vengeance over justice; a system that punishes innocent people for trying to prove their innocence instead of accepting plea deals that mark them as criminals in perpetuity; a system where incentives and power structures align for prosecutors to destroy the life of an innovator like Aaron in the pursuit of their own ambitions."

People asking me "who is Aaron Swartz?"
This is Aaron.

I never got to meet Aaron Swartz, but I've used his code, read his essays, and respect him for his accomplishments.
I've worked on many projects and ideated even more, and occasionally I'll discover an idea that is brilliant yet not-quite-legal. Seeing what happened to Aaron, along with other misfortuned hackers over the decades, has instilled a fear of being prosecuted for doing something we believe to be for the greater good. These people know the risks and, being some of the more rational people out there, rightfully fear them. But they're also brave enough to face the consequences and fight to better our global society.
On the 2nd anniversary of his arrest—after two years of prosecution by the DOJ, facing 35 years in prison, despite that the "victims" of Aaron's "hack" were long satisfied and backed off—Aaron chose to commit suicide. I wish... more »

Idea: Mailing letters.
The latest Toady blog post is talking about how relationships are formed throughout the world:
> Children grow up throughout the world now, as you are playing, and new relationships are scheduled properly. There aren't always people available, especially in the smaller sites, so they can look down the trade network at times.
What if Dwarves could send letters along with the latest trading caravan, addressed to old friends and family. Occasionally a letter might get lost, and as adventurer you might find it, read the procedurally generated content, and go on a quest to deliver it to the rightful recipient.
Perhaps some younger dorfs would send letters to their version of Santa once per year, creating mini mandates in fortress mode ("more kangaroo leather socks!") which yield Happy Thoughts all around.

If the northern and pacific coast US states joined Canada, and Alberta (and Stephen Harper) joined the rest of America, all of our problems would be solved. This "United States of Canada" and "Jesusland" map is fool-proof.

This lovely title has been making its rounds: Valve Officially Passes On Windows 8, Confirms Half-Life 3 is Linux Exclusive
http://p4r.buzzleberry.com/?p=357
> At LinuxCon Europe, Newell officially announced the details during an on-stage question and answer session.
...
As much as I'd love for Half-Life 3 to be a Linux exclusive, the source is a satire news blog. But in that brief moment of deception, I saw colours I've never seen before. Sometimes I find myself grateful for lies, for showing me a glimpse of an alternate universe.

"In adventure mode, once I have my target wounded and weaponless, I start biting off their fingers and toes and throwing them back at them. I start with both thumbs, move on to the big toes, and then back to the fingers. Usually they've bled to death by 3 or 4 appendages."

Using Sass source maps in the Chrome DevTools
In case you missed +Lennart Schoors' talk at Fronteers, he recently did a write-up about our recent experimental support for Sass source maps in the Chrome Developer Tools. Check out his post below for how to enable and get started with it :)

Is there a web service that handles image uploading/editing/serving for my service? Perhaps notifies me via webhook?
Maybe something like white labeled imgur with some editing features.
Ideally:
- I make an account, specify webhook, I get a special URL to send my users to.
- When my user wants to upload a photo or a bunch, they get redirected to the service which has all fancy drag n' drop image uploading, and auto-resizing based on what I define, and minor editing/cropping features.
- Once they're done, they get redirected back to my site and I src the stuff they uploaded.

Ideas are vectors traversing an N-dimensional product space
Every once in a while I'll be reading Hacker News or TechCrunch when sudden weight sinks in my stomach: "that's exactly the idea I wanted to build, it's even in my ideas.txt and everything!" Internal conflict ignites as I try to reconcile the defeat of being beat to it, but I'm still curious and optimistic. Maybe they got it wrong? Maybe I can do better? Maybe I should get back to the drawing board and get a head start on my next idea.
This is a dangerous fallacy.
As two products grow into existence, they may align and appear to be equally-matched competitors, but an idea rarely stays still unless it's already hitting huge traction and changing it is just too risky.
Every idea comes from a different frame of mind and gets distilled through subjective steps of evolution. After... more »
