I posted about If This Then That ( www.ifttt.com) before  ( http://goo.gl/gyqxr ), so if you are not familiar with this service I recommend to read up on it. IFTTT is basically a service which lets you automate tasks, using recipes you can set up on their website.
For instance, I use it to save every item I have starred in Google Reader automatically to Evernote (sadly I will have to find another solution for that soon).  
Or you could set up  a recipe which will trigger an SMS-notification whenever you recieve an email from a specific sender.

The IFTTT news for the week is that now they have enabled some channels which you can use to set up recipes to control your Philips Hue light bulbs. Hue, being a "smart lightbulbsyst... more »

The Big Picture - what do you see?

With the Google+ redesign, I am seeing most of the posts in the two column layout. But some of them, apparently all containing pictures, are spread out over both columns. And some are taller than others.

So, just to see if the size of the image has anything to do with that, below, a very big picture. Of the Big Red.

Now what do you see? The Big Picture in a small (left or right) column? Or spread out over the whole page?

And by the way: where are the trending topics?

Microsoft ups Google´s game to socialize search results; offers FB link
 Google will serve you personalized results favoring your G+ buddies and an easy click straight to G+ to ´join the discussion´.

Microsoft´s Bing does one better and offers you an immediate comment stream on the subject you were searching for.  Limited to Facebook, but that is to be expected after both companies joined forces. 

No doubt Google will respond; won´t be long before search becomes an integral part of social, just like sharing and watching youtube already is

RSS and The Long Tail of infrequently updated blogs

Interesting view on the power of RSS (in the light of the demise of Google Reader).

The value of RSS and RSS-readers lies in their ability to keep in touch with those sources that update infrequently. 

It’s not the online powerhouses you want to “follow” in your RSS reader, because their articles will find their way to you anyway, via Twitter, Facebook or your online connections.

It’s the Long Tail of infrequently, but not less interesting, and maybe smaller blogs you want to keep track of. The publications that are drowning in the noise of the high-speed, chronologically reversed, streams. Without RSS, they would lose a lot of readers.

An incredible, amazing, superb, tremendous article....

Interesting article on the use of words by Apple. Backed up with some analyses (conclusions are debatable as usual).  
 
It's not just the hardware combined with the design and the software, as marketers can tell you. It's the experience, the framing, the feeling etc. (ad hoc reading tip: The Culting of Brands by Douglas Atkin). 

I used to think it was the fact that I am non-American, which made me cringe so many times listening to Apple's keynote speeches, with their overuse of the words "incredible, amazing..." etc. Of course fueled by comments around me that the Dutch never get really enthusiastic about anything (partially true, we play it cool ;-)

Ingress - Automated Mission Control 

Or how to set up your own Mission Control with updated fieldreports /screenshots.

We all know the situation in the field changes quickly while playing #ingress  . You had this brilliant link or Control Field in mind, but when you arrive at the Portal, new links made this impossible and/or some of the Portals have fallen into enemy hands (grrr)...

Or you did manage to make an awesome Control Field, but by the time you get home to take a sceenshot, it’s is already torn down by those evil smurfs/toads.

Maybe, you just want some confirmation that you really destroyed that whole enemy Portal Farm (burn baby, burn!).  

In other words, sometimes it helps to have some intelligence from the Ingress Intelmap, when you are out in the field. But we also know the Intelmap on mobile devices is pretty mucheh..... more »

Granularity of rewards

This might have been suggested before, but just some thoughts on rewards (AP) for taking down enemy portals or rebuilding:

it seems logical and fair to be awarded more AP for taking down higher level resonators. So less AP for taking out an L1 resonator (or portal) than for taking out an L8 resonator. After all, it will have cost you more in either a. bursters or b. time to get to a higher level yourself and take out that L8 resonator. 
Maybe even award more/less AP based on the resonator charge (100%, 80%...)?

Also link AP could be differentiated. Making longer links generally required more effort.

BREAKING: Google holds contest; will let non-developers buy Google Glass!

Google is "looking for bold, creative individuals" who want to help Google discover what can be done with Google Glass, according to an official web site for Google Glass.

Since last year's Google I/O, the company has offered developers who attended that conference the opportunity to buy a pair. Now they're opening it up to creative users with good ideas. They're choosing those users with a contest, of sorts. 

The site says: "Using Google+ or Twitter, tell us what you would do if you had Glass, starting with the hashtag #ifihadglass ."

(The hashtag will also no doubt surface some hilarious gag entries -- hopefully better than "I would look at porn all day.")

Invisible warfare

I really hope the right checks and balances will be implemented and there will always be a paper trail of the decision making. Even though in "normal" warfare there are already enough decisions and actions taken behind the scenes (out of the public eye), movement of real troops or (even small) attacks on enemy nation states (or groups of enemy combatants) will mostly picked up on by the media.

With cyberwarfare, its seems the actual acts of war are going to be underground for the most, as in unseen by the public. That is, unless the outcome of the cyberattack leads to physical destruction of some sort (see Stuxnet and the Iranian nuclear plant).

What will be the treshold for declaring war on another state, how will governments be held accountable, how does one prove an enemy nation state's involvement?

How to search for Vine videos

Vine, the new 6-seconds video sharing app from the folks at Twitter, launched a couple of days ago (http://readwrite.com/2013/01/24/twitter-vine).
For now only for iOS, the +Android app will probably follow later. 

Curious to know what the fuss is all about and what people are sharing? Just try this search:

on Twitter.com type "vine.co/v/" in the searchbox. Add another keyword if you want to filter your results (for instance "vine.co/v/"AND sunday) 

Or use the same query ("vine.co/v/") on Twitterfall.com. Here you can monitor several different search queries at the same time (updates in near real time).
Of course you could try to use the same search query on Google+, there will be a lot less results though.

Beste mensen. Vrienden. +Diane Mevius .
Mijn nominatie voor “G+ man van het jaar” kwam als een donderslag bij heldere hemel. Ik was er behoorlijk van onder de indruk en had dus wat tijd nodig om het allemaal te verwerken. Ik fantaseerde wat voor impact deze nominatie (en een mogelijke overwinning) op mijn leven zou hebben.

Zal ik nog gewoon naar de Appie kunnen, zonder te worden aangeklampt door opdringerige fans? Zal ik nog zonnebrilloos binnenlokaties kunnen bezoeken? Zal het succes mij naar de hoofd stijgen en de zal ik de onvermijdelijk hierop volgende fase van drank, drugs en de onuitputtelijke stroom van gewillige ravissante vrouwen overleven?

Control

I met her less than a month ago, but it seems so much longer. And it is already hard to imagine a life without her. That seems kind of silly, since these types of relationships usually don’t last long with me. But for now, it feels quite good.
 
Just as many other relationships start out nowadays, I met her online. When I first received her invitation in my mailbox, it didn’t hesitate or think about the impact this relationship might have on my everyday life. I jumped in, not knowing what she would have in store for me.
