Scientists have come up with a way to make whole brains transparent, so they can be labelled with molecular markers and imaged using a light microscope. The technique, called CLARITY, enabled its creators to produce the detailed 3D visualisations you see in this video. It works in mouse brains and human brains; here the team use it to look into the brain of a 7-year-old boy who had autism.

Here's a rough mock-up of what the HONY book cover is going to look like. The actual HONY book will be a little bigger, and the jacket will come all the way to the edges, but you get the idea. I personally think it looks amazing. Actually teared up a bit when they gave it to me. It felt like I was holding a few years of my life in my hand.

The book is coming out in 6 months, on October 15th. But do me a favor-- if you KNOW you'll be getting one, and can spare $20, go ahead and preorder now. Bookstores order a long time in advance, so if we can demonstrate solid demand in these first few days, it will go a long way in determining the final success of the book.

Historically, nationwide booksellers have been a bit skeptical of both photography and city-centric books. I know HONY is different. You know HONY is different. But it would help a ton if we could SHOW that HONY is... more »

Oh, from the mouths of babes. This kid totally blew me away There are just too many unbelievable quotes in here to pick a favorite, but one thing I really love and appreciate about him is his repeated, humble admission that he may not know--that perhaps he is wrong. Most adults don't even have the confident humility to admit that. 

His answer to what the meaning of life is brought me to tears. I won't even bother quoting is because you just have to watch it in full. Can't wait to see what this kid becomes as he continues to grow.

Zefrey Throwell’s upcoming exhibit ‘Panic in the Chalk Cave’ is a memorial to his father, who’s life was ravaged by drug addiction. He mixed crystal meth with his father's ashes to create a series of portraits. The exhibit also features a film about young lovers experiencing drug addiction, and Throwell's paintings based on the film. It opens Thursday in New York City.
