Round 2 (the craziness is over) -- After staring at a small print of this image for a few months I realized that it was not finished. So I went to work on it again: smoothing the sky, and giving the building more presence. I used more selective gradients and dodged/burned the internal framing of the skylight. This was time consuming as there are reflections of the frames in the windows. The final result accurately represents what I had in my head. Beaten down but very happy!! Reading +Vision Explorers first newsletter yesterday helped me realize that this image is complete. Check it out and enjoy some of the best writing and visual representation on what makes fine art.

We started driving cross-country on a little rut road with a ton of crossings. Being that everyone is a driver :)) I heard "go straight", "no, left", "back up then left"..."dude watch out for that rock!!". In the end we hiked for a while toward this back glacier. Welcome to sea level on the Iceland coast in a massive blizzard. We walked down a very rough, boulder-ridden, boat ramp, knocked out of a cliff and used by a Duck Boat tour. Launching a boat from this place seems borderline insane. There was a blizzard raging but we didn't really care...probably added adrenalin :)) This is the most concern I had for my well-being of any photograph from the trip. The hard snow, clouds and waves made a fairly dirty image that didn't need much bw conversion as everything was already dark and black. Long exposure smoothed out the monster waves while they soaked me and made me rethink this position. But I got what I expected...some ominous mood. THE DECAYING DC-3 OF SOUTHERN ICELAND

The US Navy DC-3 (C-117 military version) airplane was my last shot in April along the coast of Iceland. (I've geotagged it in photo details). We've all likely seen many images of this wreckage decay...it's eerie and mysterious and therefore interesting. I made a very long exposure specifically to juxtapose the static plane with the motion in the sky, after all, it used to fly!

The plane landed on this black sand beach after running out of fuel. There were no fatalities. The tremendous weather this plane endures each year guarantees that someday soon it will be completely lost. Dyrhólaey (Door Island) has a high cool factor to me that is beyond words. It is the main feature of the coast that I wanted to shoot on the trip. I'm thrilled that I came back with plenty of shots of this feature...each from different vantages along this fantastic coastline, different lighting conditions and different weather conditions (blizzards to sunsets). Yay! I better get to processing the rest... With my pals +Daniel Sjostrom +Simon Doughty +Jaycee Crawford who can all attest to my obsession. :))

The tide was working with +Daniel Sjostrom and me at Jökulsárlón after a few visits. Like I've been describing, these icebergs move back and forth to Diamond Beach. Even at such a common place in Iceland, it's fantastic that the human fingerprint is very small...just a small unpaved parking lot and a tiny building selling water and snacks.

I still am amazed by this beach. It was one of the main places I wanted to see, in as many lighting conditions as possible, on this trip. Each time I open a raw and do the most basic of processing, all these colors come out in a massive bang! Polarizer over a 10 stop ND must have done the trick. LAGOON AT JÖKULSÁRLÓN

A few days before we got to Jökulsárlón it was completely frozen over. Obviously when we were there the ice was breaking apart, making this ominous groan when it did. When the tide goes out many of the icebergs get pulled out of the lagoon and end up on Diamond Beach...about 1000 meters away. Truly amazing to see happen.

We went to #DiamondBeach 3-4 times to experience perhaps the only place on earth where icebergs come ashore on a volcanic black sand beach. Truly awe-inspiring just to stand there...let alone taking photographs. But we took plenty. Pretty obvious why this is a "must see" in southern Iceland and why it's called Diamond Beach.
