With snow threatening the full running of the Giro d'Italia's two mighty tapponi to Val Martello and Tre Cime di Lavaredo later in the week, Thursday's stage 18 mountain time trial from Mori to Polsa has taken on an additional significance in the final reckoning.
Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) holds a lead of 1:26 over Cadel Evans (BMC) and 2:46 over Rigoberto Uran (Sky) entering the 20.6km test, which marks the beginning of the Giro's endgame. Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) soloed to victory in Vicenza to earn his second stage win of the 2013 Giro d'Italia. The 30-year-old Italian jumped away from the peloton on the day's only climb, the category 4 Crosara with 16km to go, rode through the remnants of the day's early break, and held off the pursuit of a diminished peloton in the stage finale.
Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin-Sharp) took the sprint for second in the maglia rosa group, which crossed the line 19 seconds after Visconti.
The top of the general classification remains unchanged with Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) remaining in the overall lead.

CHERASCO, Italy (VN) — This weekend’s decisive mountain stages could see major rerouting due to worsening weather conditions in the Alps, Giro d’Italia officials said Friday.
Race director Mauro Vegni confirmed to Agence France Presse that snow and winter-like temperatures on the upper flanks of the Col du Galibier may force Giro officials to remove the historic climb from Sunday’s 15th stage.
Giro officials have been assured that French authorities are working to clear roads of recent snowfall, but the race is already creating a “plan B” in case snow continues, AFP reported.
Vegni told AFP that if conditions worsen at the Galibier summit, at 2,642 meters, the finish line would be moved to Valloire, at 1,962 meters. The village is located ... more »

Mark Cavendish took his second stage win of the Giro d'Italia, finishing a bike length clear of Elia Viviani (Cannondale) and Matt Goss (Orica-GreenEdge) at the end of a high-speed stage into Margherita di Savoia. Led out perfectly by his Omega Pharma-QuickStep teammates, with Geert Steegmans providing the final launching pad, Cavendish never looked in danger of being overhauled.

No defending champion has won the Giro d’Italia since Miguel Indurain in 1993, but Ryder Hesjedal goes into the race with that aim. His season so far has been very similar to the one last year, and with a series of showings in stage races and in the Ardennes, and being lighter than in 2012, Hesjedal will prove that last year wasn’t a one-time thing.
The Canadian knows what it takes to win a Grand Tour, with his combined skills of climbing and time trialing, he can keep up with Nibali uphill and Wiggins in the time-trails. All three have won a Grand Tour within the last couple of years and I doubt any of them will have an off-day in this race.
