The Trabant ...
is one of the two cars manufactured in East Germany. The car is seen as a symbol for the decline and final collapse of the country itself. The average wait period from ordering the car to driving it home was 10 years. Used cars were often much more expensive than a new one since they were available while new cars weren't. The average life span of a Trabant was 28 years and people took care of it.
The car was made of a steel frame while the rest of the body is made of duroplast a hard, bakelite like plastic produced with cotton waste and phenol resins.. So it is the first car made of recycled material. The car had a 26hp 2-cylinder 2-stroke engine having the problems of a smoky exhaust and the pollution it produced.
When the production was stopped in 1991, 3.7million cars were produced and a Trabi cult still being alive in the East of Germany st... more »

I played with a Russian Horizon 202 panoramic camera and some long expired Up400. During scanning I realized that the right edge is always out of focus. First I blamed it on the rather disturbing vibration when the rotating lens hits the end but after checking a widelux on ebay and the camera itself, I realized I didn't insert the film correctly .... Anyway, it seems like a fun camera to shoot.

Life's a learning curve
This is a portrait of my parents shot with a 6x9 pinhole camera. Exposure time is about 10sec. They can't hold still anyway. But maybe that does the trick.
When their lives flow by, nothing's gonna be in focus anymore.

First roll is ready ... This is one of the first images taken with the Zero Image 6x9 pinhole camera. True, it's a bit soft but what to expect from a tiny hole. Anyway, I think I kind of get the picture what you can do with it. Key is: long exposure. Don't even bother with a couple of seconds That will get you out fo the shaking of the camera, blur out everything that moves and have the rest sharp and crisp ...

Just got this beauty in the mail today. It's a wooden pinhole camera made by Zero Image. About 20min after UPS dropped it off, it was loaded with an Ilford HP5+ and the first roll in 6x7 format was shot in about 30min. I developed it right away in Rodinal and while I'm writing this the film is drying in the bathroom.
I'll show you tomorrow ... I can't wait to scan them.

Taking a break ...
I tried a new type of film in my Hasselblad last Thursday: The Ilford PanF+. I wasn't sure how to develop it but I took the Acurol risk and I think it really worked out just fine.
The grain is nearly invisible. The detail and sharpness is great. The in focus parts even pop out a bit. After developing the film looked like it had a lot of contrast and I had to turn down the curve during the scanning quite a bit.
Here is the recipe:
Ilford PanF+ shot at ISO25
Developed in SPUR Acurol 1+100 at 22C for 22.5min. Agitation for the first 30sec and afterwards twice every five minutes.

Hey, it's underwaterthursday and you should join me for a little dive. This pigmy seahorse I found in one of the best places for macro photography: Lembeh Straits on the island of North Sulawesi in Indonesia. I realize the focus is just a bit behind the seahorse but it shows how they almost disappear in the coral. It is quite difficult to find them. They have the size smaller than a finger tip and they usually live deeper than 20m. But they dive guides know where to find them. They don't seem to change place very often.

In the remote Lower Omo Valley of Ethiopia twelve expressions were recorded on film of a young boy from the Mursi Community. Spoken language was unavailable to us, so we exchanged expressions for words and exposed frames of film like clockwork for perhaps one minute or less. Behind me was his community, talking to him and helping him feel at ease in front of the camera. Like children everywhere the reactions are quite familiar and have proven to me the interconnectivity that binds us all regardless of cultural, religious or political differences.
With this small community I spent the majority of my three weeks in Ethiopia, and was almost unable to break free from this collaboration to pursue the next community on our short list. We stayed at a local village less than two hours away, a distance normally traveled in perhaps thirty minutes under different road conditions. The two locations were... more »

Hello, is anybody in there?
Something quick for #tuesdecay by +Ian Ference taken with the latest addition to my camera family, the Leica R4. Film was Up 400 and is expired for about 10 years. At least this time around I didn't push it. I guess either overexposing it or leave it longer in the soup might also help.

Another shot with from the bakelite wonder, the Perfekta. Shoot first and check results later since there is hardly any control on the thing. Yes, and it is the ugliest camera ever built. I'm going to edit the other 2 images and blog about the camera ... oh, and include it in todays selfy :)

This one is taken with a combination of
Pentax 645
Ilford FP4+
developed in SPUR Acurol
Even though Acurol increases sharpness and acutance, I'm not happy with the outcome. There is weird things going on in the sky and sharpness isn't really good either. I did expose for the shadows and developed 20% less. It also seems that the zoom lens on the camera isn't the sharpest ever made.
The film before was an HP5+ and sharpness and contrast is much more to my liking
