Resilience requires an understanding of life's harsher realities
This thought provoking piece suggests that, 'the self-esteem movement - encouraging parents to shower their children with praise - may be creating a generation of emotionally fragile narcissists,' and that building resilience requires a recognition of the harsher realities of life.

Was reading +Ming Thein 's latest article on his blog. He's very frank with himself and what he is.
http://blog.mingthein.com/2013/06/17/photographic-aspirations-part-one-who-we-are-vs-who-we-want-to-be/
I met him one year in KL - he's a young, intense guy. Then followed one of the comments to this video. Both the article and this video are absorbing.

So a family (old family friends) had us over for a meal and asked, Do you still shoot pictures, the old way - Knowing that they meant fffeehhhleeeem, I said, Yes, I still have the odd camera
Turns out they used to buy the old roll or two when they went shopping in the old days. These all seemed to be expiring 2006, so some landmark date must have been a year or two earlier.
They looked at me strange when I said it's alright, there could be weird colours on the faces but that's currently cool Number One replied, We have instagram for that....

There's a certain something when you walk with another photographer. It's not necessarily the exchange of technical tips and techniques, it's the acquiring of vision.
This is +Luster Lai doing an impromptu framing of two bicycles. I had a look at her LCD and exclaimed "ah, there you go again, your signature style - I can sort of see the two bikes but I haven't yet reacted in a way to make them human"
I was walking with the fish and was looking for expansive vistas - and just as I clicked this shot - felt that there was another scene unfolding - the iconic guy with the phone to his ear, shopping bag, the other guy half turned and a slightly moving tram in the back. Even that rivulet of water draws the eye.
And an over the shoulder shot for +charles embrey

First things first, I am not promoting any brand or getting any form of benefit, or for that matter expect to get any benefit from it. Therefor my objective is merely sharing a photographic experience with you, rather than to sell this specific product or brand-name. That said, it never stops to amaze me how versatile today's entry level cameras are. To spoil myself for Christmas 2012, I bought myself an Olympus TG-1 camera for everyday use. I took it with me under the water of Port Philip Bay, Melbourne Aquarium, the rivers and mountains of Patagonia, the streets of Melbourne, and every time the results takes me by surprise. No reason to do any post processing, as it contains its own in-build functions like shooting pinhole, tilt-shift, HDR etc. and its under water shooting is just amazing.

So it had been an exhausting but wothwhile day, providing knowledge to postgrad students in their journey to producing their thesis. I had my old small sensor Kodak P880 with me and the golden light was fading into the night quickly. Tried to preserve some gentle light in a few shots. And not in others.

Melbourne is full of Street Art - whilst standing there, figuring out how to fish, a led group came with the guide talking away. Of course, out came the phone cams and there was photobombing. Well actually with the fish in your hand, you'll always be photobombed so you turn the tables and make the photobombing quirky if you can.

Used to be, before G+, one would shoot in isolation. Some photogs who shun the social networks still do, they feel it's somehow cool. Or some wander in closed packs - people they meet from the local camera club or the gear oriented forums. That's more gregarious but still, unless everyone is a forum addict, it tends to be infrequent meeting of the minds and the souls.
The G+ community in Melbourne has evolved somewhat differently. We have large gatherings infrequently and much more often, small subsets of personal groups. But pretty much hourly, someone will be in sharing photos, thoughts, aspirations, experiences - even into the dead of the night. And the boundaries of discussion and sharing are often across all groups and public, with outreach across the world. Sure, there are times when you want to think alone and shoot alone but even then, the encouragement and engagement when you... more »

There's an evolution happening in enthusiast cameras. Mirrorless are coming into some prominence given that users of classic DSLRs sometimes try to use them in a non classic way.
