Sherbet Sandwich... Big Bend, California
I was musing about HDR photography on my blog today: http://goo.gl/uS2Yf. I don't comment on the merits or demerits of HDR very often. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter what I think. Hashing something over and over that has no answer never seems productive to me. Doing that makes me feel like I'm wasting air I might need later on for something really important. So I usually step aside and let others have at it.
See, the whole conversation is all part of the greater concept of (what is and isn't) art. That discussion has been raging on for centuries and STILL hasn't been resolved to anyone's satisfaction. I'm big on resolutions. So I go about my business, making images that make me happy and sharing a bit about what I do to those who are interested. Seems like a good plan.
But then t... more »

Triglav Lake, Julian Alps, Slovenia
Triglavsko jezero, Julijske alpe, SLO
Testing new G+ look with this photo... and photo before :)
This view is so bigger then before.
Location on the photo is great: there is 7 lakes in the valley on the way to Triglav mountain (2.886m). Not so hard to climb, great hiking tour.

Skradinski buk waterfall, Krka river, Croatia
Fresh photo from today :)
Today I visited this awesome place.
We took round walking path, without boat.
Skradinski buk is one of the most attractive parts of the Krka National park.
It is the largest travertine cascade system in Europe
It is a massive, clear, natural pool with high waterfalls at one end and cascades at the other, located in the Krka National Park in Croatia.
It is the lowest of the three sets of waterfalls formed along the Krka river.
In an area 400 m in length and 100 m in width there are 17 waterfalls and the total difference in height between the first and the last falls is 47.7 m.
Due to the wealth and variety of geomorphological forms, vegetation, and the various effects caused by the play of light on the whirlpools, Skradinski buk is considered to be one of the most ... more »

Pick your place to relax, island of Vis, Croatia
Odaberi svoje mjesto za opuštanje, Vis
When hiking on the island of Vis you can see many good non crowdy relaxing places to enjoy.
If not happy with offered you can go to this island in the background - Saint Andrew, in the mist, but after that is open sea and Italy :)

Hope to return some day again to this island , so much more to explore and visit here. I think my friend +mamo delpero agrees :)
We were there only for four days which was not enough, not even close.

Just a quick nap...
Lions spend much of their time resting and are inactive for about 20 hours per day. Although lions can be active at any time, their activity generally peaks after dusk with a period of socializing, grooming, and defecating. Intermittent bursts of activity follow through the night hours until dawn, when hunting most often takes place. They spend an average of two hours a day walking and 50 minutes eating.

Flehmen response
In the flehmen response, tigers draw back their lips in a manner that makes them appear to be “grimacing” or “smirking”. The action, which is adopted when examining scents left by other animals either of the same species or of prey, helps expose the vomeronasal organ (also called the Jacobson’s organ) and draws scent molecules back toward it. This behavior allows animals to detect scents, for example from urine, of other members of their species or clues to the presence of prey. Flehming allows the animals to determine several factors, including the presence or absence of estrus, the physiological state of the animal, and how long ago the animal passed by.
This adult female tiger appeared near the gate of the Ranthambore National Park, one very hot April afternoon.

Aegean Islands' colours
Patmos (Greek, Πάτμος) is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Its main communities are Chora (the capital city), and Skala, the only commercial port.
The churches and communities on Patmos are of the Eastern Orthodox tradition. Patmos is mentioned in the Christian scriptural Book of Revelation. The book's introduction states that its author, John, was on Patmos when he was given (and recorded) a vision from Jesus. Early Christian tradition identified this writer John of Patmos as John the Apostle. As such, Patmos is a destination for Christian pilgrimage. Visitors can see the cave where John is said to have received his Revelation (the Cave of the Apocalypse), and several monasteries on the island are dedicated to Saint John.
In 1999, the island's historic center Chora, along with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and th... more »

Mono Lake Sunrise
I was shooting a time-lapse video on this morning when the card filled (I had forgotten to format it). I changed the card but that created a small glitch in the timelapse.
Then the battery died! I changed that. To get the battery out I also had to take my Canon off of the tripod head using a Manfrotto quick release plate. It doesn't necessarily snap exactly back into place, so you also typically get a sudden jump in some direction of a few pixels.
Both happened during the peak sunrise color, so I couldn't simply make a video from before or after the glitch, I had the best light interrupted twice!
I did keep shooting though, so I have lots of still pictures from the morning, and this is how we learn. I'm a lot less likely to make those same mistakes now when I shoot.

Golden Gate Bridge at Sunrise
I had a request yesterday for a print of an image from this sunset by the Golden Gate Bridge, so I uploaded this shot to my SmugMug gallery as well to provide a couple of options to select from: http://jeffsullivan.smugmug.com/Landscapes/San-Francisco-Bay-Area/3792961_m27SrJ
The other one is a little soft in places because it was shot at 50mm, which offered less depth of field. This one was shot at 24mm so it's sharp all over. I could have gone for a smaller aperture, but that light was changing quickly and that would've resulted in exposures so long that I'd have fewer compositions (as well as more noise).

One Year Ago Today: Wildfire in Record Hot Year in the U.S.
This is from the Topaz Ranch Estates Fire May 22, 2012, just over the hill, about 2 miles from where +Lori Hibbett and I live. We saw the smoke and went to the top of that hill to capture this pictures.
U.S. Roast to Hottest Year on Record, By a Landslide
"How hot was it? The temperature differences between years are usually measured in fractions of a degree but last year blew away the previous record, set in 1998, by a full degree Fahrenheit."
"The year featured a La Niña weather pattern, which tends to cool the global climate overall, and scientists expect it to be the world's eighth- or ninth-warmest year on record."
"Assuming that prediction holds up, it will mean that the 10 warmest years on record all fell within the past 15 years, a measure of how much th... more »

Paradise Found, Florida Keys, FL - #Photographyworkflow, #historythursday, #howtophotograph
Dry Tortuga is truly a paradise with its blue green water and uniquely designed Fort Jefferson. Fort Jefferson, was constructed in the mid-19th century as an effort for the United States to protect the extremely lucrative shipping channel. The only way to get to Dry Tortugas is to either take a sea plane or via a boat (there is a daily ferry service from Key West).
How was this image created?
This is a photograph taken from a single engine plane. I chartered a plane for the sole purpose of taking an aerial photograph of this island. The requirements for the airplane were that it was an over wing aircraft and I would be able to open the windows while in flight. We flew to Dry Tortugas just as the sun was rising and I instructed the pilot to circle the island. We took... more »

Silent Motion, Blackwater State Park, WV
We love to shoot in the West Virginia. There are some fabulous places to take photograph and the colors are stunning...specially in spring and Fall. I took this photograph of Elakala Falls in spring when the falls is surrounded by the rich green moss. What I love about this photograph is the fact that it captures flow of water which appears to be standing still....If you look at the larger version of the photograph you will notice white streaks that indicated how the water was flowing around the foreground element.
__How was the image created?
I used a circular polarizer to cut down on the glare...even though it was an heavy overcast day the polarizer helped in bringing out the rich colors in the wet rocks. The composition was selected to avoid a bridge directly over the falls and to capture the motion of the bubbles as... more »

Bridge and the Tower
Daiba area of Tokyo had no shopping building when I was young. Still a lot of young couples visited there by their cars. The view of the central part of Tokyo from there was outstanding. So I was so unhappy when the Rainbow Bridge was completed. I thought it ruined the nighttime view of Tokyo (Of course there was no lights on the bridge at the time). So when I visited Daiba a couple of weeks ago, I captured this image to share the feeling I had when I was young with you. But once I saw the Rainbow Bridge this way, I realized that I kind of liked the details of its structure ...

Google+ 2nd Anniversary Photo Walk in Tokyo is almost here!
The last place we visited on the Google+ First Anniversary Photo Walk Tokyo that we had in June, 2012 was Daiba, Minato-ku. To get there, we took the Yurikamome Line and went across the Rainbow Bridge. Before reaching the main part of the bridge, the train passed the loop part which, some of you may know, I love so much. We were lucky enough to take the front seat (the Yurikamome Line is computerized and the front seats are for passengers), and saw this wonderful sunset even in the middle of the rainy season! I bursted three or four shots, and one of them survived and made it here a year ago. The second anniversary is now approaching, so I decided reedit the image (I cleaned all the reflections on the front glass) and share it with you again. The Second Anniversary Photo Walk Tokyo is scheduled on Saturday, June 29. If you are... more »

A four month old Siberian tiger cub (panthera tigris altaicia) successfully captures and kills a large plant. This guy is a wildlife rescue that found a home at the Wildlife Waystation, the rescue facility I have supported since 1987 (www.wildlifewaystation.org)
He did grow into his feet and now successfully attacks and brings down redwood trees!
The Siberian tiger is highly endangered in its native habitat due to extreme poaching pressure. There are estimated to be well under 1000 wild Siberian tigers.
Hope you enjoy the image.

Tower of Babel Radiating Dawn: April 2 2013 © Copyright Stephanie Sawyer - all rights reserved.
Arches National Park, Utah
If only I had been to Arches National Park before. This was the best I could do driving into the park in complete darkness, not sure where to shoot. I wish I would have been able to find a much better foreground. Also, I didn't want to run around in that soil too much. That dark almost black looking stuff in the foreground is cryptobiotic crust. It's super fragile. It takes years to recover if you stomp on it.
I was hoping to get a nice sky like that again the next dawn now that I had a better orientation of the park. But nope, got clear blue skies the next day. Anyway, I shot the Tower of Babel with two vertical shots which I merged in Photoshop.

Corona Del Mar, California
This is about all I've been able to shoot with my new 16-35mm f/2.8L. Stuff down by the beach. It's not far from home and I can decide last-minute if the cloud potential will be good. This day it looked really good. I was not disappointed. Instead of shooting to get the arch, I went to the side of it to get a different perspective that would work with the cloud formations and breaks. Also there were at least a half dozen photographers at this beach. It's becoming almost too popular. So I moved far away from the crowd.
Sure enough.... as soon as I found a couple of comps I wanted to work, another photographer literally set up right next to m... more »

Yes, It's the Ever Popular Watchman Tower View From the Bridge: November 1, 2012. © Copyright Stephanie Sawyer - all rights reserved.
Zion National Park, Utah
Should I be embarrassed that I actually stood with at least 100 other photographers on the Bridge to get the ever popular Watchman Tower Shot? And even more embarrassed that I'm actually posting it???
I know, I know. But I consider it a souvenir shot of being in Zion. I was coming back from checking out the Emerald Pools before meeting up with Steve Sieren and his workshop. There just happened to be a parking spot open. Well, it was sunset and there were some clouds in the sky. Some nice colors were starting to happen. Oh look, several photographers just left the bridge on the right side and a spot opened up. So, I set up took a few shots, and less than 10 minutes later left. It's not original, and joins ... more »

Here is another shot of lining up some rocks!

Second Beach, Olympic National Park
This was our second day back to Second Beach during last summer. The kids wanted to swim and play in the sand, so I made them go early in the morning to get some photography in. It was overcast, but the clouds were thin, letting in a bit of a warm glow. I thought this made a nice vertical comp with these larger rocks lined up and leading the way to a sea stack, or a line leading to an anchored ship!

The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah
This was taken during a Steve Sieren workshop in Zion National Park. It's almost overwhelming to focus on one comp at a time in the Narrows. There is so much good stuff. These rocks caught my eye. They lined up nice and pointed the way down the canyon.
