Our family had another close call today... My in-laws live in Moore, OK and the tornado that hit today devastated their neighborhood. Their house is still standing and they are okay, but 3/4 of their neighborhood is gone. Luckily a neighbor had a storm shelter they used, but all windows are blown out and a tree was sitting on their kitchen table.

As some may remember from my prior posts my brother is a West EMT and if the explosion in West had been 30 minutes sooner he would've been one of the fallen.

We feel so defenseless given we live almost 300 miles from my in-laws, and if I thought I could get in there i'd take a generator up there this evening. My father-in-law said they're not letting anyone in, though they're staying home just in case looters show-up. Crazy we were just up there last month.

Our cat is named Sagan after Carl Sagan, and my daughter asked a bit ago who he was.  I found this video while showing her some pictures and videos of him, and I just had to share...  What an amazing individual, and I hope more like him are yet to come.

Suggestion to the Google Plus folks ... I like that the top search bar and menu disappears when I scroll down, but please have it stay hidden when scrolling up until I reach the top of the page -- else have a +/- so it can be collapsed.  Just frustrating as I scroll up alittle to see more of a post and the menu/search slides down.

Cool!  I'm downloading Doctor Who from last week and this week, so after the kiddos are in bed we're having a Doctor Who Double Feature!  I hear both episodes are WONDERFUL, but I'm trying to avoid the spoilers.

Okay this is really my first time to use the new G+ interface, and though i like the layout it's VERY clunky.  The scroll bar is lagging big time as the page loads with scrolling, and the top bar keeps popping down and back up pushing everything else down.  Crazy!  Guess I'll stick to the tablet until they get the desktop bugs worked out.

Dangit, heading to the city dump in the morning to take some scrap wood and I can't find our water bill :-/  And of course the City Water website won't load.  Hope it'll be up by 7am, else I'll be trying to draft a neighbor to go with me.

We just noticed the house we lived in about 4 years ago is up for sale, and it's crazy weird seeing the pictures of it online since my wife and I redid about every room in that house before we left.  Would it be weird or maybe even misleading to call the Realtor and schedule a showing?  The owners wouldn't be there, so they wouldn't know it was us.

My son has never seen the house so it'd be surreal seeing him in there, plus my daughter barely remembers it.  Has anyone done this before? Just curious --

A group of do-gooders who call themselves, "Robin Hood and his Merry Men," are being sued by a city in New Hampshire for allegedly topping off strangers' parking meters that are about to expire.

They like to leave notes that say, "Your meter expired; however, we saved you from the king’s tariffs, Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Please consider paying it forward.”

According to the Union Leader, the city claims Robin Hood and his Merry Men have "intentionally taunted, interfered with, harassed and intimidated" the city's three parking enforcement officers. The suit also alleges that the group follows the parking enforcement officers around the city and uses video and radio equipment to coordinate their efforts.

We have some new pets in the house...  some friends of ours are moving and decided not to try and move their fish, so we're their new family.  It's a 10 gallon tank with about 10 tropical fish, though I still don't know what kind they are.  They're too fast for my cell phone camera to get, but I did get a neat picture of the single krill that lives in the tank.  That thing is super tiny, but it's fun trying to find the little guy whenever I walk by.

And yes that last picture is our mischievous tabby cat Sagan who will sit there and stare at the tank for 5-10 minutes at a time.  She's yet to jump on the tank (knock on wood), but I'm planning on getting the hardware to bolt the stand to the wall tomorrow just in-case.

Just finished reading through the 1989 Radio Shack catalog online and found myself drooling over tons of things just as I probably did when it originally came out. I was a Tandy kid back then and frequented the Radio Shack in our local mall way too often, so the yearly Radio Shack catalog was something I looked forward to. Funny now reading through this almost 25 year old catalog and still thinking how awesome it'd be to have some of this stuff :-)

After almost a year we've finally getting back into Stargate Atlantis.  We started watching it last year on Netflix then last summer we put Stargate on the back burner to get caught-up on Doctor Who... but before we could start watching again Netflix dropped the series.

So we subscribed to Amazon Prime and we've got Stargate going again.  We left off someplace in the middle of Season 4, so we just started back at the beginning of Season 4 to get refreshed... it's the best thus far :)

Kinda neat, this evening (or last night I guess since it's 4:30am) we watched the original Toy Story.  Both of our kids have seen parts 2 and 3 but not the original.  Neat thing is my son is a fanatic about Cars, and it was fun seeing Dinoco as the gas station Andy's mom pulls up to.  I love the way the Pixar folks do this across movies :)

And if you do here's my reference URL - https://z9chsfprp.ting.com/ - which will save you $25 when you sign-up :-D  I know, shameless plug, but honestly I've yet to run into any negatives with these guys.

Okay, so Google Reader is shutting down, and apparently the G+ stream is abuzz with alternatives. If I can make a suggestion in this arena I'd say check out #DoggCatcher.  It's actually an Android app written more for Podcast aggregation, but it also handles RSS feeds very well.  I've used for about 2 years now, and it's pretty nice.

It's not a Desktop app per say so maybe it's not a complete replacement for Google Reader, but given I'm consuming more of my content on the go this works for me quite well.

This guy has created a drink that contains everything someone needs to keep their body going, plus he said it tastes great!  He's been drinking only this for about 6 weeks and said he feels great plus his blood work and other tests are good.  I hate that he called it Soylent, but still the thought of not eating but just drinking this goop every day actually sounds worth trying.

Why don't we have something like freesat in the US?  This is apparently a Free To Air satellite service in the UK that offers about 150 radio and TV stations including some in HD for free.  In the US we have Free To Air satellites anyone can tap into (http://www.ftalist.com/), but the decent programming is spread out between many satellites requiring multiple dish's to pick-up.

I've seriously been thinking of investing in a FTA dish system just so I can access AMC21 (Ku-band 125.0 W) which offers about a dozen PBS feeds, but something like the freesat system in the UK seems to top anything I've seen in the US.  The only similar system here is Glorystar which offers about 70 channels on Ku band Galaxy19 (97.0 W), but all this content is religious themed which isn't really my bailiwick.

It would be amazing if Google or someone with deep pockets would create aFTA n... more »

This is why I love science...  Scientists have found new clues regarding the mass extension that wiped out the dinosaurs about 70 million years ago.  If I had it to do all over again I so would've majored in Geology.  This area of science has always been a love of mine, and I still have boxes of rocks and fossils I collected as a kid which would be neat to go through now.

We recently subscribed to Hulu Plus, and while searching through their surprisingly small number of kids programs I was glad to see Mister Rogers represented... and equally glad to see this episode from 1997 where Mister Rogers interviews Bill Nye.

Though I was already out of high school when it aired for whatever reason I do remember watching it ... who knows.  At any rate for any science fanatics like myself who have access to Hulu Plus or even Amazon Prime you might enjoy this or enjoy showing it to your little ones.

I ran across this today, and gosh just think of all the things we had as kids that aren't around today.  Granted the things you remember may be different compared to others depending on age, but even people in their 20's will surely know what a Dial Tone is.

So the question is what indispensable technology or item did you have as a kid or teen that isn't around today, and is it's predecessor a worthy replacement?

Will we see Microsoft Office 2014 for Linux???  Extreme Tech seems to think it's a possibility, but would it matter?  I think it would be a huge splash for corporate users given they could now look at Linux as a desktop where MS Office has always been a requirement.  For home users though?  Probably not so much.
