Poor guys. Every time they argue with science -- the closest approach humans have to reality -- they lose. The obvious solution: gut science. Then when you make up your crazy shit, nobody will be able to prove you're wrong!
Seriously, Lamar Smith -- first SOPA architect, now would-be destroyer of the world's finest scientific institutions -- is a severe danger to this country, and indeed to the world.

Good idea, but I think Pandora's box is already so open that our Identities will not fit back in anymore...

So I've noticed my posts are getting assigned hashtags that I don't explicitly define. Keywords such as "cooking" are automatically being added as a hashtag.
Google+ is getting smarter. Maybe too smart...

Cooking pierogies for dinner. Opened the box claiming to contain 12 and instead found 13.
It is a good day.

"Scientists believe they have found the first evidence of the existence of other universes beyond our own, following analysis of the radiation left behind by the Big Bang.
Data gathered by the European Space Agency's Planck spacecraft enabled researchers to map the "cosmic microwave" of background radiation left behind when the universe began 13.8 billion years ago.
The findings imply the universe could be just one of billions, or even an infinite number, they say.
The map showed anomalies that cosmologists believe could only have been caused by the gravitational pull of other universes outside our own.
"These anomalies were caused by other universes pulling on our universe as it formed during the Big Bang," said Laura Mersini-Houghton, of the University of North Carolina.
"They are the first hard evidence for the... more »

One UK manufacturing firm - Engineered Arts in Cornwall - is trying to make robots that share more human characteristics, to make interaction with them more natural and intuitive than ever before.

Still learning the new layout for the non-mobile site. First impressions:
Is the profile background even bigger than before? Really?
I don't mind the multi-column look. It looks weird with one column and all that gray space on either side.
I'm not sure how I feel with the "Communities" and "Suggested For You" interspersed in between posts. I'd rather they are somewhere out of the way so I can easily ignore them.
The blue "new" box. I didn't like how the site would jump when new posts popped up (especially when I'm commenting or posting), so I guess the blue notification box is a better solution. Not sure yet.
Why are notifications (red) all the way over by themselves, ostracized from everything else on the menu? That's just racist.

X-ray vision tracks lightning bursts
Researchers in the US have captured the world’s first X-ray images of lightning, by creating a special camera that can capture radiation at 10 million frames per second.
Joseph Dwyer’s team has created a customized camera that has 30 detectors made from a combination of sodium iodide and photomultiplier tubes, each measuring 3 × 3 inch. The device, which is approximately the size of a standard refrigerator, is also equipped with a 3 inch pinhole aperture, and can record X-rays at 10 million frames per second. “This is actually a very old technique for making images, like that seen in a camera obscura,” Dwyer says.
During July and August this year, Dwyer’s team studied four rocket-triggered lightning flashes at the Florida test site. Each flash lasted for approximately two seconds and the resulting sequences ... more »

Just got done with some light yard work. Here are the results. And this is in no way a thinly-veiled ploy to pass off a professionally maintained antebellum plantation as my own home in order to imply a social status much greater than the ground-level rung I currently cling to. Just ignore all those people that look like tourists.

How the price of paint is set in the hearts of dying stars
Today I’m going to try to explain the real reason that barns are painted red: nuclear fusion. And yes, this is an excuse to take a mad ride around some of the stranger corners of physics and chemistry in order to give you the real, this-is-not-BS, answer to a simple question.
This question got stuck in my head as a result of an episode of a long-forgotten sitcom called Head of the Class, about a high school class full of smart kids. (Sort of like Welcome Back, Kotter in reverse) This being an American show, it’s obligatory to occasionally emphasize the superiority of the ordinary virtue of “plain folk,” so in one episode the protagonists face off in some kind of academic contest with kids from a rural school, and end up losing because their city-slicker knowledge can’t answer the question “why are barns red?” (And ... more »

This is interesting. Also it seems that an experiment could be performed that would confirm or refute some competing theories...
So what does this mean for the Standard Model? It all hinges on something called the electric dipole moment, or EDM, a state in which the center of positive charge of an atom lies at a different point than its center of negative charge. According to the Standard Model, an EDM would be too small to measure with current technologies. But competing theories that account for the matter/antimatter imbalance also predict much stronger EDMs. And if these EDMs exist, pear-shaped atomic nuclei would be a likely place to find them.

Predicted amount of enjoyment from site - frustration at site not being mobile friendly
Positive numbers result in the site being shown, 0 and negative numbers flash a message that says "it wasn't worth it".
C'mon +Google+ , stop trying to sell me eyewear and give me something useful.

So a co-worker went off and got married. You know those shows where they give a house a makeover while the homeowner is on vacation? Maybe I watch too many of those programs.
