Scott Jarvie386,389POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURESIt's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event.SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINKIt's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all.You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to.BENEFITWell it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most. I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks likeON AIRThis will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout.I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't.SPECIAL GUESTBecause I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things I will have my good friend and great photographer +Susan Marinello on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well.We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access.DIRECTIONS1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album3.  IMPORTANT If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video.4. Make sure the album is Public access5. Add +Scott Jarvie  +Susan Marinello to your circles6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites.IMPORTANTIt bears repeating:If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video.DShare your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00147

Thomas Hawk6,156,0612,500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 4 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Thus far, I've shared last name A-Da, Da-Ho, Ho-Mi.  Today's , part 4 of 5, today, represents Mi-Sh.  I'll share the last remaining circle tomorrow.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for part 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OCPart 3-5:  http://goo.gl/lyVn6f*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-04 15:53:284916170106
Holly Ares Snyder2,324Haven't shared a circle in a while, so here you go. This is my circle of most-useful people--all worth following. Check it out. 2013-05-02 20:51:3821010012

Michael B. Stuart19,214MSD 3 BETAIt's time to upgrade my "Must See Daily" circle.I need to slim down a bit.  I'd like 150 but under 200 might be a better goal.  Feel free to tell me who I'm missing before the final release.About this circleThis circle is heavy photography for obvious reasons, but it also showcases some of the best Google+ has to offer.  If you would like to improve your stream there is no better solution!Notes:- Some truly original and unique content- My own go to circle- Hand selected, organically chosen (huh?  This release post is a bit first drafty too.  I will probably highlight some circle members as I have before...) #circleshare   #sharedcircles   #beta  2012-12-26 05:42:0624259529

They also have "more photos, less spam." There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity).Be sure to get all 14 circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to November 18th for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting November 1st.)I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday2012-11-23 12:27:13298915

Thomas Hawk2,480,3142,000 Kick Ass Photographers on Google+Part 3 of 4 (La-Ro)Part 1 of 4 (A-Ev) here:  http://goo.gl/Z333gPart 2 of 4 (Ev-La) here:  http://goo.gl/dX7lRThis is the fourth time since joining G+ almost a year ago that I'm sharing my photographers circle.  I shared it with 500 photographers, 1,000 photographers, 1,500 photographers and now 2,000 photographers.  I have to break my circle up into four 500 photographer circles as that is the G+ limit.  Each day this week (Mon.- Thurs.) I'll share a different circle.  Today is the third circle and includes photographers with the last name's La-Ro. A few notes about these circles.  I always get hated on when I share them by people.  Inevitably if I include 2,000 people, I will leave 50,000 people out.  This is not intentional or personal.  This circle is not "the best" photographers on G+ or in the world.  It doesn't mean if you are not in my circle that you are not a "quality" photographer.  This list is simply photographers that I've stumbled across for whatever reason over the past year and have chosen to follow their work.  In some cases I've gotten to know the photographers in this circle personally -- through photowalks and trips, hangouts, in real life, etc.  Many of these people are or have become my friends.  Most of the photographers in my circle though I don't even know.  They are just people whose work I admire and want to consume -- I hope many are future friends.  :)I use some objective criteria with this circle but I use a lot of subjective criteria too.  This is, afterall, my own personal circle that I look at and +1 from every single day.  My aesthetic taste and personal preferences may be very, very different than yours.  This is ok.  Art is subjective.  That said, here a breakdown of my own preferences and biases that influence who I add into my circle.1.  I like people who are active on G+.  If you haven't posted one of your photos in the last month you probably are not in this circle.  I use a script to uncircle inactive people regularly.2.  I like photographers who mostly post their own photographs.  I dislike clutter and "dumb stuff" in my photographers circle.  Excessive reshares, circle shares, memes, gifs, youtube videos, posts not about photography, web links, etc. make me uncircle or move people to a different circle.  I also like photographers who regulate how much of their photography they post to their stream.  I don't want to see 50 shots in a row of someone's vacation.  I think about 5 photos max a day feels about right to me.3.  *Controversial* I dislike signatures and watermarks.  You will find photographers in my circle that use them.  It's just a bias, not a hard and fast rule.  I mostly want this stream to be as watermark/signature free as possible.  I totally understand and respect your reasons and decision for using watermarks/signatures.  I hope you equally respect my decision to not want to consume photos mared up with them.  Please don't turn this into a discussion about watermarks/sigs, I've spent the last 10 years thinking heavily about this issue.  It's just a personal preference and bias.4.  I like people who are active, positive, helpful, enthusiastic G+ community members.  I dislike people who are rude, mean, complainers, trolls, harrasers, etc.  If you say mean things to people, about people, about their art or their work I don't want to follow you.  I'm fine with debate and disagreement.  It should just be done respectfully -- there's a huge difference between respectful disagreement and rude behavior.  Not only will you not be in this circle if you are rude, I'll probably block you too.  I want to surround myself with positive 2012-06-06 16:11:54497154131314

Mercury News Photo Contest Win!

A couple of friends asked if I had won a photo contest last week. Hmm, I don’t think so … then one of them bought in the newspaper and there was my picture of Reed Flute Cave on the front page of the travel section. It seems I won the first prize for the international category. Yay! I sent the travel editor an email to thank her and ended up having a great email conversation with her. In a few words, she totally inspired me to keep this crazy photo blog going. That was such a nice side effect of finding out my picture was published =)

Below is the wining shot. The judges included the following caption:
“FIRST PLACE, INTERNATIONAL: Christian Ortiz of San Jose won with this photo of an underground lake inside Reed Flute Cave, one of the cave systems under the mountains of Guilin in southern China. Ortiz wrote: “There were a good numberof tour... more »

Door to the Other Side

If you found yourself roaming a desolate Tibetan Monastery and came across this blood-red door, would you walk through it? Of course you would! There is an inescapable human need to explore, especially when the outcome is uncertain. I don’t pretend to understand this primal human impulse or why it runs counter to our innate survival instinct, but I tend to follow it more often than not. Usually it turns out great, but sometimes I nearly end myself …

I was walking down a wide alley when I came across this door and had to do a double take. It was practically begging me to open it! I was walking down a wide alley when I came across this door and had to do a double take. It was practically begging me to open it! I walked up to the door with the intense focus I usually get before an eminent trespass and I pushed up against it with my hands. At first it did not budge, so I put my shoulder into it softly and pushed harder. It begrudgingly started to open with a low rumbling noise and I was flooded with endorphins before I was rudely brought back to reality by a whistling sound.

Excitement turned to panic as I looked around for the source of the sound. The alley was empty. Had the noise come from the other side of the door? Well, I was not about to be stopped by a little sound so I went back to work on the door when I heard the same little whistling sound. I quickly backed away from the door and if I had been burned and that is when I noticed the old monk at the window sill above the door. He was looking at me wearing a pleasant, yet mischievous smile as he shook his finger at me.

Curses! Now I will never know what was on the other side. Monk wins this round.

Impending Tibet Exhibit

Some of my photos from Tibet will be part of an exhibit in Oakland, hosted by ArtX Gallery. If you are in town on March 29, come out and check out the pseudo-hippie-political-propaganda … yeah!

I met this little Tibetan monk at Sera Monastery in Tibet. He was in the middle of a verbal sparring match with his teacher. The practice is called the Monk Debates and it is a method for teaching monks about Buddhism. The basic premise is that one monk asks a questions and the other has a limited amount of time to answer. It gets exciting though because the monk asking the questions makes martial art-like gestures while the monk sitting on the floor tries to retort before he gets a figurative karate chop to the head. The questions are all relating to the teachings of Buddha. It was fun to watch these otherwise, peaceful dudes, let out some steam with all their crazy gestures and yelling about.

Why the heck did I process this photo so that the little monk is shrouded in darkness? Well, just look at the relentless peace and optimism emanating from his face, despite of everything going on out there. It just seemed appropriate that he would give off light in the darkness.

A Dying Breed

Tibetan Monks are a dying breed. There is no way around it. It is sad and it is unfair, but the reality of the situation is that they have been under the control of an occupation state who’s interest lies far from that of the Tibetans. To put it bluntly, it may be another few decades before they are technically extinct.

Those were the thoughts going through my mind when I was watching these jovial monks go about their daily chores at the Tashilhunpo Monastery next to the city of Shigatse. I was trying to reconcile the images I had formed in my mind when I was a boy with the reality I saw as an adult. As a kid, I had imagined coming here to see a thriving culture bustling with life and ancient wisdom. As a kid, I had imagined coming here to see a thriving culture bustling with life and ancient wisdom. As I walked around the monastery and the surrounding town, the acute absence of life almost seemed to echo off the walls of hundreds of small, vacant buildings. There were certainly people around, but the people were disconnected from the purpose of the structures in some strange way so that you knew that time had passed the monastery by.

What would happen in another few decades? Would the last of the Tibetan Monks be replaced with Chinese actors for the sake of continuing the lucrative tourist industry? I think that in some way, that mockery would injure the essence of this once-sacred place beyond repair and the world would have lost yet another reason for being proud of its heritage.

Tibet Art Exhibit

I got linked up with the nice folks at ArtX Gallery and they will be displaying some of my photography from Tibet at their exhibit on March 29th at the Dufin Building in Oakland along with other artists. If you are in the area come by and say hi. I am going through my portfolio and will be posting some of them over the next few weeks so you can get a sense of what will be on display.

Oasis

I have been land-locked these past few months with little time to go out and take pictures but after a particularly tough day at work, I grabbed my camera and went out looking for something to feed my starving creative side. I was walking around the North Park Apartments in San Jose when I finally settled down in front of their main pool at the Cypress village. This place is usually loaded with folks splashing about but since it was cold and dark, I got the place all to myself.
Well, not exactly. There was a cat hanging around on top of the fireplace. I don’t trust cats. They always seem like they are planning something and it usually isn’t good. I have visions of walking down a dark alley and being attacked by cats for some reason. This one did not seem to want to start something thought. I think he was too busy trying to keep warm. Either way, they are finicky creatures so I had a plan ready in case he wanted to throw down. It involved some dodging and ducking followed by some quick footwork ending with the cat in the pool and me cheering. Cats can swim right?
That will teach you to ruin my oasis, cat.

Lines

I recently had to take an emergency trip down to Mexico. I was really not in the mood to take pictures but it is now second nature to bring my camera everywhere I go, so I had it on me when I was watching the sunset from the rooftop of a house from my youth. I had quietly sneaked away to be alone for a while and watch the day finally come to a rest. My vantage point was far from beautiful with the crisscross of power lines dividing the sky into rectangles, almost as if I were watching the sky change color from behind an enclosure, but it felt right and it felt like home.

Ortiz wrote: “There were a good number of tourists around so I quietly waited for them to pass so that I could have the place to myself and take pictures. The problem was that they would turn off the lights as soon as the tourists passed by, so I was often left in the middle of a huge underground chamber with nothing but my cat eyes to guide me to safety.” Judges’ remarks: “This otherworldly scene of an underground lake in China kept us coming back…colors and lighting are perfect. Especially liked the long explanation from the photographer on how the photo came to be.”"

I am starting to think I only have one good photo because this one keeps getting attention.

Your Journey Begins

It is said that the journey, not the destination, is the reward. Whoever said that clearly did not have to climb up and over the Yellow Mountains. No, the reward in this case, is making it through these ridiculously steep mountains without calling in the evac team. What is on the other side, you ask? A heavily industrialized Chinese city and a bowl of rice dumplings.

Mole Holes 2.0

In the not so distant future, human kind was enslaved by the then superior race of Moles.  Something in their genetic code enabled them to leapfrog us on the evolutionary chain and before we knew it, we were merely their peons.  They had us build these high-tech mole habitats all over the place.  On the plus side we no longer have to take complete ownership over screwing out planet.  Always have to think positive, guys.  Even though we got spanked by the moles.

Beautiful Grace

This is another picture from the beautiful Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. A common occupational hazard for photographers is the strange and irrational hatred security people have of tripods. Three times out of four, I will get yelled and harassed for setting up my tripod to get pictures but this was one notable exception. Not only was there a notable lack of overeager security but I suspect they would not have minded if I was hanging from the rafters cirque du soleil-style. I spent my time here in complete freedom and mutual respect. Isn't that the feeling you want to impart inside a church?

Gautama

Everywhere I seem to travel, there is the Buddha. Maybe because I tend to travel in Asia a bunch, but that is besides the point. A few years ago, one of my co-workers gave me a tiny Buddha travel companion which I took everywhere. About a year ago my one year old daughter found it among my travel gear. She picked it out, looked at it, and then gave it a gentle kiss. =) Interesting ...

Gentle Rise

This was a peaceful sunrise at the amazing Yellow Mountains in China.  I had gotten there the night before and scoped out the area for the best places to catch the sun rising.  I woke up at an unholy hour to get here before the billions of tourists changed out of their jammies and clogged up all the vantage points.  It was a very short trip but well worth it.

Valley of the Giants

I have only been to Yosemite a couple of times but I never feel quite prepared for the experience. The park seems like a place stuck in time where you are likely to encounter glowing spring wells, sprites hovering around massive trees, and large carnivores with attitudes. It is hard not to let yourself be engulfed by its charm and end up wanting to move in, elf-style.

The Shanghai skyline as seen from the top of the Pearl Tower.  The resulting photographs were an interesting mistake of camera shake while zooming in on sections of the heavily smog filled city.  The pictures gave me a sense of a long forsaken metropolis so I named this series - Vestige.

Conversations with a Yack

It was my first day at Everest Base Camp, Tibet, and I was scouting the area for something to do.  The day was almost over and I wondered down the little river a while before I found this spot.  It was all very serene and there was not a person in sight.  I didn't even notice the grazing Yack until is made a noise.  You would think I would be able to spot a wild animal standing a few feet in front of me, but apparently I have lost my spidey sense.  I setup my rig and waited for the light to get interesting while the Yack tried to make casual conversation with me.  We talked about best places to graze and lady Yacks and all that jazz before I had to head back to camp.  It was a nice quiet moment in the middle of no where.

Our Time Will Come

There is something about chimps that scares me.  They are too eerily similar to humans and it always seems like they are patiently biding their time.  Call me paranoid, but I would not be surprised if they do actually take over the world one day.

Ask Bo the Baboon

People and animals alike come from near and far to ask Bo for this advice on matters of the heart, the mind and the soul. This wise Baboon from the Oakland Zoo always has time for someone in need and is more than happy to impart his wisdom on your confused self. Some speculate on the source of his knowledge, but most are just happy to hear him speak. When I was there, he helped me broker a peaceful resolution to the territory battle I have been having with the gang of pigeons that has been targeting my car. We agreed that they could poop on my car, but only on the days right before I took it in for a wash. Thanks, Bo!

Hidden Mountain Village

This is another photograph from my very fruitful trip to the Longsheng rice terraces in China. I had many adventures here including: a stubborn donkey, a mad tofu scientist, the mischievous and lovable little kid that seemed to track me everywhere I went, a chance meeting with a wise old man and a clandestine bootleg rice-wine party with some of the local farmers. Ahh, the memories and adventures that came out of this simple little fog-covered town could fill up a room with warmth and happiness.

I sometimes think about going back, but I know that such experiences are not likely to present themselves again so I simply integrate them into the fabric of my being, and look forward with anticipation for the next fun adventure.

Flamingos Are Better Than People

I wish I could visit the zoo more often.  I mean, it is full of furry beasts that could take you apart without any warning, but they are so much more agreeable than humans.  Take this pile of flamingos for example; unlike humans, who often get testy about being photographed, these sweet sweet birds just stood there as I took pictures of them. Not a single wry look or confrontational gesture.  The baboons were a little less accommodating, but all you need to do it throw some fruit in their general direction and they chill out.  Anyway, animals are way cooler than humans.

This photo was taken on my way down from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp. This is just one of the many amazing natural beauties you will find sprinkled throughout the Tibetan Plateau. Although it looks more like a river, this is actually a lake. Yamdrok Yumtso is one of the three largest sacred lakes of Tibet and is said to me the transformation of a goddess into physical form. The lake water is an amazing emerald color (which unfortunately was hidden by the cloud cover in this photo.) This lake runs for many many miles and there are a lot of great vantage points, but I found this great place with the help of my guide.

High up on a ridge we saw a cluster of prayer flags flapping furiously in the wind. Prayer Flags are supposed to be hung in clean, high up places where there is a lot of wind so that each time the wind flaps the flag, the owner will receive the merit of the mantra written on it. It is a beautiful custom and these flags can be found all over Tibet. Some mountains are so densely covered with them that from a distance, they look like spider webs. It was a great experience to be able to travel across such a rich landscape.

Yamdrok Lake, Tibet
On my way down to see Everest, we stopped by one of Tibet's three largest sacred lake - Yamdrok. The lake is so long that is seems more like a river. It has a huge mountainous island in the middle surrounded by turquoise water. There was a little house near the edge of the water that caught my eye as we were driving by. All throughout the long ride, I kept asking my driver to make frequent stops so that I could jump out and take pictures. At one point I noticed he started getting a little annoyed that I kept asking him to stop, so I made sure to take his lunch box with me as an "insurance measure". Hey, you have to do whatever it takes to keep from getting stranded in the middle of Tibet. I don't know how to hunt Yack so I would not last long ...

A very honest and insightful post about the difficulties of making money off of photography.  Thank you +Vivienne Gucwa for sharing!

The Difficulty of Monetizing Photography (Or Anything) Online

I want to write about my own subjective experience with attempting to monetize my talents in photography and writing. It's something I have wanted to write about for a while but the subject matter intimidated me because it's not a success story by any stretch of the imagination and while you could argue that my story is still in the process of being written, it's still hard to come to grips with certain financial realities especially when they are linked specifically to your own passion(s).

An excellent article came out a few days ago called: "The Facebook Illusion" (http://goo.gl/6In2e) by Ross Douthat, a columnist for The New York Times. It's an opinion piece about the state of the digital landscape in the wake of Web 2.0 and lofty collective aspirations of finding ways to make "lots and lots of money on the Internet". One of the segments from Douthat's article that resonates deeply with my own situation is this:

"As The New Yorker’s John Cassidy pointed out in one of the more perceptive prelaunch pieces, the problem is not that Facebook doesn’t make money. It’s that it doesn’t make that much money, and doesn’t have an obvious way to make that much more of it, because (like so many online concerns) it hasn’t figured out how to effectively monetize its million upon millions of users. The result is a company that’s successful, certainly, but whose balance sheet is much less impressive than its ubiquitous online presence would suggest.

This “huge reach, limited profitability” problem is characteristic of the digital economy as a whole."

---

Some context is always good.

A few years ago, I decided to go back to school to finish up a degree I was unable to finish in my early 20s due to financial limitations. I spent the middle part of my 20s working in various corporate environments and I wanted to broaden my further job prospects down the line by finally finishing my undergraduate studies. The economy was right at the point of collapse and I initially decided to go the pre-med route because I have a love for science and medicine, and at the time job security seemed high in the medical field. After two years of pursuing those studies, I became increasingly dismayed that job security was rapidly declining in the medical sector and as my student loan debt increased, my confidence in my field of studies and the amount of time it would take to finish them dwindled. This made me rethink my future and my schooling.

During this time, a strange and unlikely set of circumstances occurred: I discovered photography. I had a little over a year left before I would finish my Bachelor's Degree and I decided I had absolutely nothing to lose by pursuing photography as a means to support myself while finishing up school. Certain circumstances happened that propelled me into the world of photography that were largely based on being in the right place at the right time. I became a regular contributor to a local New York Times blog and I started to compose photo-essays for another hyper-local news and events based site.

While testing out the waters of freelance photo-journalism, I started to focus heavily on my photography blog which was/is based on Tumblr. As my follower count on Tumblr went up after being featured in their Spotlight section for photography, so did my confidence to broaden my own style of photography. I found that my interest in exploring the over-arching concept of New York City via my photography was quickly becoming a major focus rather than local photo-journalism. After a few people contacted me via private messages on Tumblr about selling prints of my work, I decided I had nothing to lose by setting up an online store where I could sell my work on various merchandise.

The first online store I created was on Zazzle. I spent endless hours setting it up, creating product templates, writing out descriptions and making sure I had enough of my work on there. I poured through blogs full of SEO tips. I spent countless hours perfecting my tags and linking to my products on my blog. I thought to myself "This will be incredible! All of the people who inquired about purchasing my work can now purchase it. This is the way to monetize my photography." And while I added more and more work to my store there, I waited for sales to come rushing in.

And I waited. And waited.

And waited some more.

I made almost no money the first four months that I was on the site in 2011. I was beside myself. I had another semester of school left, school loans were looming over my head, and with barely enough money for food I thought to myself: "Maybe it's this way because I am terrible at online marketing, or maybe I need a larger reach." I opened another store on yet another print on demand photography site with an active community, RedBubble. I spent countless hours (once again), uploading and preparing my work for sale there, interacting with the community and fueled by hope, I started to gradually market my work on there.

In July of 2011, I received an invite to Google Plus. I was ecstatic to finally find an online spot where I could not only meet other photographers but also interact with other artists, thinkers and people from around the world. It was something of a revelation to me during my initial months on Google plus that not only were there a ton of other photographers out there but that some of the photographers out there like +Trey Ratcliff were actually making a living off their photography. I was in total awe (actually I still am!). As I posted my posts that were previously only ever posted on my photography blog, people from all over started to interact with me. On my own photography blog, here on Tumblr where I had gained quite a following (around 40,000 at that time), I barely received any sort of regular interaction about my work other than Tumblr's version of 'likes' and infrequent private messages. On Google Plus, each post in the early months would result in some of the most intensely cerebral conversation about photography. I was over the moon.

However, I was still struggling financially. I started to make a few sales on Zazzle and RedBubble based purely off random luck whether it was people finding my work via Zazzle's online marketplace (which is beyond enormous) or via searching for various subject matter on RedBubble but it was barely enough to keep my head above water. I also did some commercial work for various magazines, books and album covers based off of people finding my work via Google Images as well as Flickr.

In the later half of 2011, I entered my last semester of school broke and reliant on student loans for support but in a better place creatively. I started to write quite a bit with each of the photos I posted encouraged mainly by the Google Plus community. Prior to Google Plus, I would include writing with my posts infrequently. After lots of absolutely incredible interaction and support from the Google Plus community, I decided to explore writing as a complement to my photography. In the later half of the year, somehow I managed to get put on the Suggested User List on Google Plus. I still am not quite sure how it happened but it did and my follower count soared to well over a million followers at the beginning of 2012. It gave me the confidence to enter a few photography contests which I made no headway in but allowed me to better understand the world of online photography contests a bit more.

I also met some absolutely incredible people on Google Plus who I can single-handledly credit with encouraging me more than they probably know like +Thomas Hawk , +Julia Peterson , +Lee Daniels , +Lotus Carroll , +Sean Cowen , +Daria Musk , +Billy Wilson , +Tiffany Henry , +Alan Shapiro , +Mike Shaw , +Kelli Seeger Kim ... I could be here listing people for days. I am so thankful every day for these people because they have and still make me absolutely love sharing my world with everyone else. That's the beauty of Google Plus, really. It's great as a supportive community full of people who are sincerely interested in others.

As for my financial reality, I started making a few holiday sales at the end of 2011 on Zazzle, RedBubble and a few other sites like Fine Art America, Society6 and SmugMug that I spent quite a bit of time putting my work on in order to gain a wider reach. I thought to myself: "Surely now, with such a vast reach and broad network and with the amount of time I have spent putting myself out there, this will become lucrative."

But, the truth is, it hasn't become the lucrative career I envisioned for myself a little over a year ago.

It's quite difficult to make a living selling fine art photography via print sales and/or random contract work. And that's a truth that has been a bitter pill for me to swallow since graduating at the end of January. I see many posts from people online that remind me of myself when I first started to pursue photography as a financial career. I see a lot of variations on this thought: "Well, maybe if I had a wider reach, I would sell a lot more." However, with over 1 million followers on Google Plus, over 60,000 subscribers on Facebook (a count based on Facebook's new interest lists which is fascinating) and a photography blog followed by 50,000 people on Tumblr (all places where I interact heavily with my own posts and other people's posts because I truly love engaging with people online), I haven't been able to crack the secret code of online marketing that would somehow turn my photography career into something that is profitable.

I have noticed that few people discuss the less than positive aspects of putting yourself out there online. For every incredible success story about becoming successful based on large online reach, there are probably hundreds, if not thousands of stories like mine. I believe that the reason there are few stories like mine that get written is because when you struggle financially in regards to something you are passionate about, sometimes the only tangible thing you have at the end of each day is the hope that you will be the exception to the rule. By admitting that you haven't become the success story you wished you could have become, you lose your grasp on that tangible bit of hope that you have been keeping close to your heart for so long.

And so, when I read Douthat's article where he states: "This “huge reach, limited profitability” problem is characteristic of the digital economy as a whole.", it was as if all of the heartache I have been experiencing regarding my own subjective reality pursuing photography as a lucrative career was staring at me in the form of a thought that so perfectly sums up a glaring issue that I barely see discussed regarding having a huge reach and barely making headway in terms of making that reach profitable.

I would love to open up discourse regarding this subject but I am not sure how many people will actually read what I have wrote and I am not sure that people are open to discussing something as touchy as this subject based on what I wrote above regarding hope. Do I regret any of the things that I did or the enormous amount of work and time that I put into pursuing my dream? Of course not. Without trying, you will never know how things will pan out. I definitely think that while I haven't been able to make photography work for myself financially, I have met so many incredible people along the way who have truly inspired me to never give up on photography as a passion and that is something that I consider to be priceless.

In a recent post by +Paul Stickland about Google Plus and Visual artists, +Marie Hélène Visconti made an incredible comment that I agree with wholeheartedly regarding the various artist's communities on Google Plus: "I have the feeling of having found the equivalent of the artistic circles which used to exist in Paris before and after WWII, a very stimulating environment."

As for myself and my current subjective reality, I will be embarking on a job search soon.

Don't worry, you can be sure I will post about that too in the coming weeks.

Old Blue Eyes
I am not really into portraits, but every so often, I find someone who looks interesting enough for me to stop them, pay them some RMB and ask them to stand still for a tick so that I may capture their awesomeness.  I was hiking around the little mountain villages in the Longsheng rice terraces area of China, when I happened across this fine gentleman.  We did not share a common language so I proceeded to pantomime my intentions to take his picture.  He tilted his head and raised one bushy eyebrow in consideration before he accepted my offer.  I released my inner paparazzi on him for a few seconds and when he was done, he simply turned around and whent about his day as if nothing had happened.  I wonder what he thought of the whole experience?

In for the Night
It has been a very busy past few months, but I finally unpacked my computer and got some much needed photo time last night. I couldn't wait to process this picture of the Berkeley Marina. I arrived there just in time to see the sunset and had to scramble over some rocks to get to this position while there was still color in the sky. After the constant rush that has been my life over the past few months, it was very satisfying to stand still and simply observe the sunset over this beautiful marina.

Just Your Standard Corner

Hmm, not much to say about this one. Let me see ... it is your standard brick corner complete with arches, located at one of the most prestigious Universities in the US. It comes complete with long hallways leading to equally good educational prospects. While you are considering which direction to take, you can enjoy a refreshing drink at the nice little water fountain. Come by and join me for a pensive good time at the Stanford University corner.

Solitary

Have you ever seen Leping Zha's amazing photography of the Yellow Mountains? They look like something out of a fable. I spent a lot of time and energy getting to this place and unfortunately, the weather was not great so I only managed to get a few good pictures, but it was still worth it. I was so exhausted by the time I got there that most of it is a blur. I do know for sure that the experienced involved hiking with a friendly Thai dude, getting up way too early and looking down on the tops of clouds from jagged mountains. I am not sure where I took this photo but it was in my camera so I am fairly certain it was real =)

I do know for sure that the experienced involved hiking with a friendly Thai dude, getting up way too early and looking down on the tops of clouds from jagged mountains. I am not sure where I took this photo but it was in my camera so I am fairly certain it was real =)

Everest

I was only a couple hours from Everest Base Camp when my driver suddenly stopped the car and motioned for me to get out. I looked around and surmised that this was probably not an ambush so I took my camera with me and climbed a nearby hill. When I got to the top, I was greeted by this view of Lady Everest. I took a few quick photos and got back in the car before I froze my nose off, not knowing how lucky I was to get this unusually clear shot of the peak.

Pelkor Chode Monastery, Tibet

I like photography because it has so much to do with chance. I was thinking of this little castle in the clouds I saw from the top of Kumbum Stupa in Gyantse. The clouds were perfect, there was a bit of blue and the light was just right to give it a fantastical effect. How was it that I was there at that precise moment when all the elements came together? I think back on that day and all the random little detours and choices that were necessary to get me there. I love floating around with my camera, ready to capture whatever life has planed out for me.

Shanghai Nights

I have had a few opportunities to visit Shanghai and I am never disapointed with the sights. This is a view the Pudong District from across the river. It was late and I had been walking all night and was about to call it a day when I came across this view. I setup my rig and took a few shots right before they literally shut off the lights. I got an image of some technician in a dingy little room throwing a switch and laughing to himself in the dark. I looked around wondering if someone was playing a practical joke on me, but I guess there is no need to show off after 11pm.

The Tibetan Himalayas (Color Version)

"If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?"
"Tibet. I don't know why, but I think I have a connection to that place."
"Then you should go."

I ended up spending eight days in the land of snow. My time there was certainly short, but it was characterized by silent, long distance drives through endless plateaus and mountain ranges. I visited ancient monasteries, saw a people struggle to hold on to a dying way of life, and was enveloped in sheer natural beauty. It was a trip marred with the pang of loneliness in which I spent most of my time in contemplation of my surroundings. I was at the rooftop of the world, staring at the vast blue sky in a state of reverence as I gradually re-mended a connection, I suspect, I once had. At the time, I did not realize all of this. It was only once I was back in Beijing that I noticed the jarring incongruence.

Unfortunately, it did not take too long for me to lose that newly formed connection, but the memory remains and I am grateful for it. All of this is very abstract, but sometimes that is the only way to experience certain things. I am left with a deep sense of respect and gratitude for the Tibetan people.

Grizzly Giant

There is no better place to try out infrared photography than a wooded area. We were doing a quick trek through Mariposa Grove in Yosemite when we came across this giant sequoia tree. I wanted to accentuate its huge stature so I got up close to the base and shot up with a wide angle lens. The infrared gives it an extra bit of uniqueness.

I wonder if anyone would notice if I hollowed out the middle and lived inside?

Fire Over Yosemite Valley

I recently posted a similar portrait of Yosemite Valley, so I thought I would also post the landscape shot. This was taken as the sun was rising and the sky began to light up with warm colors. I am still in awe of this incredible national park. I wish I could move my family into a little log cabin and spend the year fishing, taking pictures and enjoying the scenery, but I think my wife and daughter would not appreciate that very much.

Yosemite Rising

I know everyone comes away with the same shot of Yosemite Valley, but I had to try my hand at it. I made all my friends wake up at 4:30 and drive over to the vista point to ensure we would get a good spot. The problem was that it was the first day of daylight savings when the hour changes and the sun rise was an hour later than we all expected so we ended up standing in the dark cold for almost three hours waiting for the sun to rise. By the time it was coming up, all the guys were frozen and fed up with all the waiting, so I took a few quick last minute shots before a full mutiny ensued. I am glad I persisted =)

Half Dome in Infrared

I am really getting into this infrared photography thing. I converted my D90 back in January, but I have not had much time to play around with it until a recent trip to Yosemite National Park. The picture straight out of the camera comes out all red and crazy because the white balance is all funky. It reminds me a bit of the red screen of death in the old Diablo game. Once I correct the white balance in post processing, the image looks great though. I am not quite sure what those little mounds of hay are, but they looked like a cool foreground leading up to Half Dome.

Starry Night Over Yosemite Falls

I just got back from a weekend at Yosemite National Park. A couple of friends and I were standing in the freezing cold in the middle of a pitch dark meadow for an hour trying to figure out how to take night pictures of Upper Yosemite Falls. This is my first attempt at this but I really like it!

St. Patrick Church

Have you ever noticed this quaint little church in the San Francisco’s SOMA district? It is close to the Metreon and seems completely out of place amidst all the office buildings, but there is something proud and charming about the way it seems to stand unperturbed by the urban environment around it. It was a cold winter day when my brother and I popped in for a look and were shocked at how large it is inside. It felt like a little sanctuary in the middle of a bustling city.

Inocente

I met this cool little kid in the mountain town of Dazhai near the Longji rice terraces. During my short stay there he became my little shadow and would go around leaving mischief in his wake. He was very curious about my camera which gave me plenty of opportunities to photograph him in his natural state. There was something very innocent about his humble farming life that I wanted to accentuate through this picture.
