Mexico in motion - May 2013 - Mexico

I finally finished the editing of the stop-motion video of our trip to Mexico. As +Lisa Donchak and +Karen Hutton, I truly believe in cross-training and I think this kind of project really helps your photography. ;) It definitely takes longer to do than a simple post-processing of pictures but it is a lot of fun to do!

In the woods  - May 2013 - Sallenôves, France

After going back to my hometown, I headed to my grandparents' place which is located in Haute-Savoie, next to Annecy.

The day of my arrival, my grandfather and I went for a hike in the countryside. That's when I saw in my mind this picture with the church lost in the middle of the forest and the mountains as a background. 
I didn't have my camera with me at that time, so that's only the last evening that I was able to give life to my vision! Luckily, there were some nice moving clouds ;)

Trust - May 2013 - Mexico City, Mexico

Our trip to Mexico comes to an end. We just landed in Dallas and are waiting for our flight to San Francisco.

As photographers, we trust so much in those super tiny cards!
They are captures of places, captures of portraits, captures of moments of life. They are memories.
So, during the entire trip I was trying to take extra care of them.

Here's the trust setup that we took with us to Mexico. A total of 87GB in 9 different cards. And, 7 of them are full! The only empty ones are the 2GB and 1 GB.
That's a lot of space but there's kind of a lot of time-lapse scenes and also the #x100s raw files are quite big!

Can't wait to get some work done in a few hours ;)

Lovers - April 2013 - Chapultepec, Mexico

We spent yesterday night in #morelia and there was actually a jazz festival, a lot of fun!

We headed towards Mexico City this morning. We decided to not take the highway but to take the small roads. And that was a great choice: we went through a lot of tiny villages, all with their own #taquilleria, #carneceria, #panaderia and of course some Volkswagen Beetles! ;)
We stopped at a small place along the road, had tacos with meat only and that was amazingly delicious! There is nothing better than #streetfood ;)

We then went to Castillo de Chapultepec to enjoy the wonderful architecture!

Last night in Mexico, heading towards #SanFrancisco tomorrow. Can't wait to post-process the gazillions of pictures! ;)

Tortilleria - April 2013 - Cuitzeo, Mexico

Today was a special day in Mexico: it was el dia de los niños, or day of the kids. So, the kids of Mexico didn't go to school today. Instead, their school, the city and the state were organizing activities for the kids to have fun!

Anyway, after spending two days in #Guanajuato, we headed towards #morelia this morning. We did a quick stop in #cuitzeo. It is such a cool place: all the shops have their name painted on their facade.

Here's a Tortilleria, the place where they make tortillas. And let me tell you, this is a super important place in Mexico! ;)

Guanajuato specialty - April 2013 - Guanajuato, Mexico

To me, meeting locals and eating/discovering local food is a huge part of travelling.

So, this morning I went for a walk and met three new people: Juan, Gustavo and Esperanzia.

On the way back, I stopped at a bakery and I asked for the specialty. The baker thought for a while and then said "it's bread con queso Philadelphia".
I then bought it and it was actually some bread stuffed with cream cheese! It was really good ;)

All that to say that Mexico definitely seems to be so far away from the US because most of the times, spanish is the one and only language spoken. But some other times like this morning, you definitely feel the influence of the big neighbor!

Wonders of Guanajuato - April 2013 - Guanajuato, Mexico

After spending the morning in #sanmigueldeallende where we had an amazing breakfast composed of #mexican hot chocolate con churros, we then headed towards #guanajuato.

It took us quite a while to find la #casadepita, driving in this city is interesting... Once we found it, we then went for a walk climb towards the #pipila, a big statue overlooking the city. And here's how we got rewarded!

There are so many architecture gems in such a small place, +Swee Oh would be running all over the place! ;)

The foundries of Santa Brigida - April 2013 - Mineral de Pozos, Mexico

Another great day in Mexico: it started with an early morning walk in #queretaro followed by some amazing Gorditas and then we headed towards #mineraldepozos, a city that used to be a mine town.

We got lucky with the sky a little bit before sunset, perfect for some #timelapse. The three chimneys on this picture used to be three foundries. And right next to the foundries, there's a huge hacienda where the owners used to receive clients!

After a great day spent between visiting the Cathedral of #tepotzotlan and the ruins of a pre-hispanic temple in #tula, we arrived at our first +Airbnb place tonight in #queretaro.

What's in my bag for Mexico? - April 2013 - San Francisco,CA

A few days ago, +Lisa Donchak was talking about the fact she is truly believing in the value of cross-training in sport and especially running. I think she is definitely right. She was then saying that she is applying this idea to photography and that's why she is trying out video editing. 

I think that you can draw multiple parallels between training/getting ready for a running/sport competition and getting ready for a travel, especially when you are a photographer. 
One of the biggest questions that arise in both cases is what to bring?

You don't want to bring too much things but you don't want to bring not enough. You don't want to be missing tools that might be useful.

I'm back! - April 2013 - San Francisco, CA

Waouh, what a month! To be honest, that was good to not take pictures for a month, well almost a month. More about that a bit further down. I was not taking pictures but I read kind of a lot of things about street photography, portrait photography, travel photography. Can't wait to practice!

So, let's go back to the almost a month without taking pictures. 
I have two very good friends getting married in November. He is an amateur photographer and as you know, when someone in a couple is a lot into photography, the couple really rarely has pictures of them together because the photographer is always behind a camera...

See you in a month - Panther Beach, CA

I got my first DSLR about three years ago, but I actually started to really dig in photography back in January 2012. For Christmas 2011, I got a tripod, a photography backpack and that's when serious things started to happen. I was still shooting in full auto most of the times but day after day, I started to know my camera like the back of my hand.
During the year of 2012, I shot a LOT. I was shooting everything: 
- parades and I can tell you, there's a lot of parades in San Francisco, 
- a lot of sunrise shots,
- a lot of sunset shots,
- a friend's wedding,
- portrait sessions,
- the beginning of the +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers.

Hitherto, both Facebook and Google+ limited your photos to 2048 pixels across. This was depressing to me and other photographers that take HUGE photos, many of mine over 7000 pixels across. I share a new, original-sized photo here every day on the blog, and all my work is Creative Commons Noncommercial.

Basically, I want people to have the original-sized photo to enjoy! I know many other photographers disagree with me and they only want to share tiny images with huge watermarks using horrible fonts. That’s okay. This isn’t for them.

But if you’re like me, and you want to upload the original size images to Google and also share on Google+, well now you can!

Epic sunset - Slacker Hill, CA

Every time I go up Slacker Hill, I always take photos of the San Francisco side, but the Marin Headlands side is also really nice!

The fog quest - II - Slacker Hill, CA

Yesterday was one of those mornings... +Maximilian Laue and I had decided to take off at 3:00AM, yes 3:00AM, insanely early. Got him over the phone at 2:55am. 
Guillaume: So, how does it look?
Max: Pretty good, I'm on the 101 and there's some niiiiice fog, it's covering the city but we can see the top of the buildings!
G (getting crazy excited): Nice...

A few minutes later, we get together, drive to the Marin Headlands, in the middle of the fog, not knowing if we are going to be rewarded for waking up so early. 

We get off the car, the fog horns are screaming like hell! 

We then start climbing Slacker, still in the fog of course. Are we gonna be rewarded? After a good 5-10 minutes of walk, no fog anymore, we could see the sky and the stars. Butsti... more »

PLUS post | Final Post!

I've known +Sam Breach for almost a year now. We actually met at the +The Google + One Year Anniversary Photowalk. Anyway, back in October 2012, we were talking about photography things at the +Drink And Click™ SF when she mentionned that she had done a mentorship hosted by +Robin Griggs Wood. I joined the Google+ community in June 2012 so I was still new here and had never heard of the mentorship before that day. 

A couple of weeks passed and Robin announced her Christmas Holiday +G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers. The selection was hard, we had to answer quite a few questions. After quite a wait, Robin announced the list of the happy students ;)
And I was IN! Pffiou, that was only the beginning!
