The new G+ mobile client shown up yet? I haven't seen anything yet but I was sure they talked about bringing the new stream design to mobile...

I've been out of the loop for awhile but I've got my fresh copy of Raring Ringtail...

I know there's always motion in this community but at the same time my experience of Linux and UNIX-like systems in general is that once I have it set up the way I want, I leave it that way until something updates so drastically my configs are no good anymore (I'm looking at you X.org, you too GRUB).

So what's new and interesting? Any must-have tips or tricks new in the last 2 or 3 years?

I have Ubuntu installed but my desktop is partially blurry and unfocused on my GeForce 7800. I know I fixed this before but it's been a decade and linkrot has eaten all the references I used before. Anybody remember the fix?

It's probably just an x.org tweak or driver version but I set it and forgot it way back when.

I'm looking to switch back to using Linux full-time as my desktop OS. I have a number of proprietary Windows games/programs/etc. which I intend to keep by way of Crossover/WINE/whatever.

Here's my potentially oddball question - Is there a tool yet to do an automated "Alternative to..." query against my system? Looking everything up manually isn't difficult but it could be easier if there were a script to do a system inventory and bounce it against one of the various websites cataloging the OSS alternatives.

I can handle the admin'ing and such, I'm just curious whether this particular tool already exists before I go do it all manually.

Does anyone know an Android alarm clock with Google Calendar integration?

I found only one on the market but I'm iffy on the no-name developer with bad spelling.

What I'm after is being able to set and forget my daily alarm including holidays, trips, days off, etc. from the same place I manage those events already.

So +Valve and +CodeWeavers need to collaborate. My dream setup is for every Windows-only program with a silver or better rating to install through Steam on Linux into a Crossover launcher. Bonus points will be awarded if later Linux releases will then be handled as an update and replace the mutant install with the native version.

This would be enough to switch myself and many others onto a Linux desktop full-time on a permanent basis.

How do we make it happen?

This is my friend Scott's band, and they need your help.

On November 17th, 2012, New York-based comedy music group Fortress of Attitude uploaded a music video they created for their song “PS Gay Car” (using the exact words of a mean note they found on their car one day) to YouTube. The pro-gay rights video was immensely popular, garnering coverage from, Huffington Post, Out Magazine, College Humor and Queerty.

The video gained 39,800 views in its first month, and then a month later Youtube took down the video, claiming they’d used bots to drive up views.

The story that unfolds is Kafkaesque: Fortress of Attitude hires New Media Rights to help them get their video reinstated, and Google/YouTube’s response is to send form letters back that just restate the alleged initial TOU violation. Ultimately, Google/YouTube refuses to consider any evidence or explanation fromFortres... more »

So I ran and got Google Keep the moment I found it was available...

It's obviously early for this service. The desktop/web experience is lacking in even a "Share" button where the client on my Nexus 7 has sharing, voice notes, etc.

So I recorded a voice note, I just babbled at it... it attempted to do Speech to Text on my babble, then saved a text note of the resulting nonsense. I hit "Share to G+" and what it published here was an "image loading" circular arrow icon with no text, no link to the sound, nothing of value.

So... I like it in concept but it'll be a bit before it's really useful. I was kind of looking forward to doing my drafting and publishing in the same tool but that's not happening yet.

Oddball notion, does an app exist to convert my inbox into an RSS feed? I realize too late how much better I am at checking my daily "newspaper" than keeping up with email.

I basically want to convert my email from a "best effort" stream like social media into an imperative that doesn't require a specific conscious effort.

I have an Instant Upload question... Are pictures in the Instant Upload dated folders actually copied into another album when I tell it to move them or are they just linked to the new album?

There are a lot of pics in my Instant Upload and even after I thought I'd filed them away, they're still there and before I go delete stuff willy-nilly I thought I ought to check that I'm safe to delete the copy in Instant Upload without losing the copy I filed elsewhere.

What seems like it's probably the right answer isn't sure enough that I want to trust it without asking.

There are many wonderful, moving testimonials of sadness about the suicide of Aaron Swartz.  But perhaps the most important one to read is this angry one, by Larry Lessig.

I'm particularly struck by the point that Larry makes towards the end, which illustrates how our society treats different "crimes" so very differently.

"For remember, we live in a world where the architects of the financial crisis regularly dine at the White House — and where even those brought to “justice” never even have to admit any wrongdoing, let alone be labeled “felons.”

"In that world, the question this government needs to answer is why it was so necessary that Aaron Swartz be labeled a “felon.” For in the 18 months of negotiations, that was what he was not willing to accept, and so that was the reason he was facing a million dollar trial in April."

Look!  More awesome stuff!  We just added Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Game of the Year Edition to the Humble THQ Bundle!  That means the bundle is now a 9-game epic and also comes with DLC (for Red Faction) and select soundtracks in FLAC and MP3 formats!

If you’ve already picked up your bundle, you’ll find a Steam key for Dawn of War already available on your download page.  If you haven’t, name your price and pay over the average when you buy your bundle to get Dawn of War as well as all the other content in the bundle!  Check out the site for more details!

Random "Sending a request into the ether" here..

I have this notion that I should be able to create a recurring Google Calendar event which spawns a task entry when it comes up, since Google Tasks doesn't actually support recurring events itself.

Also, I'm looking to merge all of my everything into one system or set of systems whereby I could send a specially formatted email to myself to create a task or a new Google Drive doc similar to the email-to-notebook gateway of Evernote.

Anybody done this or knows how? So far I'm thinking it's probably gotta be all custom Google Apps Script but maybe there's something better.

I've witnessed, once again, an argument about "real names" and it bugs the hell out of me still.

Neither I nor anyone else is qualified to determine whether a name is real. This is confusion over the signifier vs the signified.

If you call me "daddy", "honey", "Kyle", these are all legitimate names for me and are more significant of your subjective relationship with me than of my objective identity. If I call myself KyleT, is that a "real" name or not? If it's the name you know me by and you consistently get me by using it, that's a real name, nevermind that my state ID says something somewhat different. This is pseudonymity. You have a consistent name by which you find me even if it's not the one my parents gave me.

Work knows me as my employee #, effectively a pseudonym. My friends know me by my name(s) or... more »

Traitor to his class: Costco CEO pays employees well
Jim Sinegal, the founder and recently-retired chief executive at Costco, the warehouse store chain, apparently has done very well for himself by doing well to his customers and his employees. Yet, apparently, not everyone is pleased. Consider the plight of Bill Dreher, an analyst at Deutsche Bank, who wrote that at Costco "it's better to be an employee or a customer than a shareholder."

Ah, yes. Pity the poor shareholder. Pity that struggling investment bank FORCED to buy Costco stock, whose officers can only DREAM of how much MORE profit would accrue if the renegade CEO would simply wise up to the fact that money paid to his team is money denied the owners of the business, the stockholders.

Before this morning I had never heard of Mr. Sinegal or about the way he operates his business. But when this... more »

When the solution is as simple as printing a ballot for the voter to read before putting it in the box, is there really any doubt why voting machine manufacturers drag their feet?

They want their machines to do something with which voters would not agree.
