It turns out that New Zealand has a North Island too - and it's quite scenic in places....
+Rob Packer and other Ozzies would assert that this mystical landform is the Northern part of Australia's Eastern Isles....
This particular scene is sunrise at Cathedral Cove on the Coromandel Peninsula.
I think Sarah may have made this one - I'll just bask in the warm light of her photographic achievements ;-)

PS - nice to see that so many of my G+ pals are still around and about.

Here's a summer shot from the Lindis Pass road - which will probably be an icy death trap within the next 24 hours, snow is a comin'
Take care out there.

Misty Morning Melancholia
The dismal Alexandra valley fog lifting for the first time in a week. This image was made sometime this past winter and I am only now emotionally strong enough to edit it - the fog messes with my head ;-)

Haast River, Westland NZ
I have been a bad little G-plusser recently, so here's one I hope appeases any angry photo-gods that may be lurking in the Googleplex ;-)
This image has always called out to me from the depths of our image archive, but I have never shared it with the world - simply because I could never figure out how to bring the best out of it in post-processing (it's about a year old now).
Fortunately, the problem resolved itself today when I walked past Sarah's computer and spotted this on her screen - apparently it had called out to her too. I think she has made it sing.
It's up on the website here: http://bit.ly/QRULPo
Enjoy!
cheers - Todd

Today's Image Was Made Possible By The Sandflies of Doubtful Sound
Another image from my blitzkrieg sortie to Doubtful Sound Last Week
As the title suggests, you can thank the sandflies for this image. I had reached a point of Zen-ophilia (not related in any way to xenophobia) about 5 minutes prior to this being made. Zen-ophilia This is where I get tired of photography and attempt to achieve a state of zen-like tranquility by just sitting and watching nature doing its thing.
It transpires that it takes a more serene and cosmically connected soul than mine to sit and watch pretty clouds while being intravenously molested by 20,000 female sandflies (the male sandflies are chilled out cruisers - they have bugger all to do other than mate with angry female sandflies).
In-lieu of tranquility I chose to photograph. I hope you enjoy this one :-)

I think they may be getting a good ol' ass-whupping by Sony (and everyone else) in this category.....
Your thoughts?

I returned last week from an incredible Summer trip to Glacier National Park. Got to make some new friends and hang out with wonderful people and talented photographers along the way. Here is an image taken at daybreak out in the Logan's Pass area near Mount Reynolds. There was no cloud action that morning, so the focus was turned instead towards a small flowing creek nearby and the surrounding wildflowers.
Thanks for taking a look. :)

Morning View From The Coronet Peak Road, Queenstown
I don't know how many of you spotted my Lightroom 4 Shadows post (http://bit.ly/Rfqw4I) earlier this week but sometimes it is nice to just let the shadows be.
This is an in camera jpeg from the 5dmkii - completely untouched by digital hands and I like it just as it is.
Anyone else feel this way sometimes?

Question: is there a way to schedule Google+ posts?
I have been using this feature with blogger.com, wordpress.com and [wait for it] facebook business pages and it is a killer tool for boosting post responses by launching them in the middle of our night.
Am I missing a button here or is it not a capability yet?

Kaikoura New Zealand Sunset | iPad or Desktop Wallpaper
Hi guys - this is the photo from the earlier automated blogger post.
It is made on the Kaikoura Coast on the east coast of the South Island. Kaikoura is home to whale watching and insanely large pods of dolphins - as well as plenty of badly-breathed seals....
You can grab this as a desktop or iPad wallpaper via the blog: http://bit.ly/N0Qyt8

Autumn Reflections - Blue Lake, St Bathans, Central Otago
This was made while I was supposed to be tutoring +Rob Packer this autumn - Rob was still up on the cliffs behind me from memory. After a severe beating from my pupil I resolved to put the camera to one side while teaching.....
This is available for download as a wallpaper here: http://bit.ly/NibI3J - just follow the download instructions on the gallery page.
LEXAR CF & SD CARD SAVINGS - In case you missed my earlier post, Lexar have some massive savings on at present (I think they end today). Links and details can be found on my blog: http://bit.ly/MvkD3N - if you are shopping for memory cards - you can't beat these prices (I think :-)

Crazy Lexar Savings
Lexar are dumping some serious savings on their top end CF & SD cards via Amazon and B&H. SALE ENDS TODAY
I have been using the 400x cards on the D800e and they are stellar, easily keeping the buffer free for my style of shooting.
B&H have some cut-throat savings on the 1000x cards, which I couldn't justify buying at the time I purchased. I would be going 1000x if buying today at these prices ( should be good for another camera upgrade) - I lose out on technology once again!

Queenstown Snow-Set
Sunset from a snow filled ditch on Coronet Peak, Queenstown. I was up to my waist in 'wind affected' powder (ski marketing lingo) while making this one - I also nearly saved myself vasectomy fees when I encountered a buried barb-wire fence on the way out too :(
On an unrelated topic - I have just announced dates and pricing for our December Lupines Workshop at Lake Tekapo. Check it out here! http://bit.ly/Ql1zEA

I reconcile my tardiness with the knowledge that most of use guyz are in the Northin hemizphere.
If any of you are interested in my highly unscientific field tests - take a gander at my latest update to the D800 v Canon 5d mkii report. I tested out the shadow recovery capabilities this week. It may be of interest to anyone out there sitting on the fence and considering 'the switch'.

How to Sell Images
Geez - this was a great hangout - though be warned, you may need to take a day off work to view it but there is some really interesting stuff in there including:
The revelation that +Victor Bezrukov looks different without one eye covered; sage marriage advice from +Jay Patel; wine-enhanced wisdom from +Thomas Hawk; stock photography insights from +Nicole S. Young and jaw dropping validation from +Trey Ratcliff that I am not the only guy who has been stoically persevering on the web in the vain hope that, one day, I will get paid to do what I love most...
Worth a watch - you may even learn something about the business of photography ;-)

Te Mata Sunrise 2
Sunrise over Hawke's Bay as seen from Te Mata Peak, with the Tukituki River valley below enveloped by fog.
I didn't edit out the lens flare on this photo because a) it was too hard / I couldn't be bothered, and b) because we all know you get a lens flare when you shoot the sun so why try to hide it!

*Are ND Grads Toast? *
I have shot this comp a couple of times - but this morning I raced up here because I needed a sure fire location to shoot my D800 - naked vs ND grad comparison. http://bit.ly/Q6TsgX
I wanted to see whether I could shoot a scene like this with my grad filters sheathed.
Read the article and let me know your thoughts - are grad filters dead men walking now that we have the HDR in a can Nikon D800 in our cold dead hands?
