The Magical Boston Harborwalk
May 17th, 2013
Boston, Massachusetts

The magical Boston Night Scape...

This one taken from the Harborwalk: "The HarborWalk has a changing character as it winds through the city's waterfront neighborhoods and downtown district, stretching from Chelsea Creek to the Neponset River, through East Boston, Charlestown, North End, Downtown, South Boston and Dorchester. Part of the richness of the HarborWalk is its variety, reflecting the various activities and urban texture of adjacent land. The HarborWalk's design guidelines allow for the expression of diversity and a variety of active and passive uses.

The HarborWalk is designed to connect the public to a clean and restored Boston Harbor. The HarborWalk links the water's edge to the city's open space system.

Along some areas of the waterfront, the... more »

The Restoration of the Charles W. Morgan Whaleship
Mystic Seaport
Mystic, CT
May 7th, 2013

Inside this gigantic structure is quite the undertaking, the restoration of last remaining wooden whaleship (built in New Bedford, MA in 1841) and the oldest American commercial vessel still in existence. It is amazing. You can walk inside and watch them actually working on the restoration process.

Info on the Charles W. Morgan Whaleship:

"he Charles W. Morgan is the last remaining wooden whaleship and the oldest American commercial vessel still in existence. Built in 1841 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, she sailed on 37 voyages around the globe during an 80-year whaling career. The vessel came to Mystic Seaport in 1941 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967. More than 20 million Mystic Seaport visitors have walked the whaleship's decks.... more »

The Haunted Victorian Mansion
April 7th, 2013
Gardner, MA

Some info from the Mansion's facebook page:

"The Haunted Victorian Mansion...Karen Mossey, Manchester Haunted Places Examiner....When you think of haunted places in New England, one place that comes to mind is the very haunted Victorian mansion in Gardner, MA. Built around 1875, it has a long and erratic history and accounts of murder and death. It is no wonder that many of its inhabitants are ghosts whom have decided not to move out. Originally a private residence of the wealthy businessman S.K. Pierce, its history of becoming a brothel and boarding house and residence of an eccentric artist whose paintings were a bit disturbing, might be the reason the Victorian is infested with imprints of residual energy. Current and past owners have come to live with the paranormal phenomena that occur in the... more »

Meet Zoe, the latest addition to the family. She is a 9-week old blue Merle Miniature Australian Shepard.

Some info:

"The mini Aussie is exactly as its name implies: a small Australian Shepherd with the Aussie’s attentive, energetic temperament, high intelligence and reserve, but never shyness, towards strangers. But while the height of the Aussie varies from 18 to 23 inches, the height of the mini Aussie ranges from 14 to 18 inches with a corresponding weight of approximately 20 to 40 pounds.

Envy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned
Belchertown School for the Feeble Minded
April 17th, 2013
Belchertown, MA

The song was playing during the post processing and it seemed fitting, pretentious, but fitting ;)

Yes, the room really was that eerie green.

Pink Floyd's Green is the Colour:

Heavy hung the canopy of blue
Shade my eyes and I can see you
White is the light that shines through the dress that you wore
She lay in the shadow of a wave
Hazy were the visions of her playing
Sunshine on her eyes but moonshine made her blind every time
Green is the colour of her kind
Quickness of the eye deceives the mind
Envy is the bond between the hopeful and the damned

Masonic Setting Maul

Inside the The North Adams, MA Masonic Building

Home of The Lafayette-Greylock Lodge

Info: "The Setting Maul is a wooden hammer used by Operative Masons to set the stones in their proper positions in the mortar. It is in Speculative Freemasonry a symbol, in the Third Degree, reminding us of the death of Hiram Abif, the Master Builder of the Temple, which is said to have been effected by this instrument. The most important sentence in all of Masonry is uttered by Hiram just before he is struck down, "My life you can take, my integrity never." In some Lodges it is improperly used by the Master as his gavel, from which it totally differs in form and symbolic signification. The gavel is a symbol of order and decorum; the setting maul, of death by violence."

A dramatic B&W shot of the Everett Mill in Lawrence for today.

The Everett is also the site of the first Historic Mills Photography Workshop, coming up on April 6. About a dozen people will spend the morning shooting the empty spaces of the Everett and Stone Mills, followed by an afternoon of postprocessing and more shooting!

The first session is sold out, but there is still room in our May 18 workshop.

The details are here:

Acushnet, MA

Love this little town I live in.  Here is a bit of it's history:

"Acushnet is a small town in Southeastern Massachusetts with a deep and rich historical past.

This region of Massachusetts is a very beautiful area. The ocean is a very important part of our area. Massachusetts is known as the "Bay State" and we are located near Buzzards Bay. The bay is very important to us because it provides us with many fun activities during the summer months and it also provides jobs for many people. Fishing is a very important industry. There are many great sandy beaches along the coast. Acushnet is only a few minutes from Cape Cod and the island of Martha's Vineyard. The town also has four beautiful ponds. Captain Jones, knowing that his Pilgrim passengers were supposed to settle in northern Virginia, headed southeastward. Although he stood well offshore to avoid shoal waters, his ship soon became enmeshed in the worst shoals in the area, Pollock Rip. A miraculous change of wind enabled Jones to sail his ship free of the shoals, and he then turned northward to anchor in Provincetown Harbor, November 11, 1620.

The outer beach, or 'backside,' of Cape Cod has been the notorious graveyard for more than 3,000 ships since the wreck of the Sparrowhawk in 1626. The high cost in lives and property demanded by the sands of Cape Cod,... more »

*Manchester Street Power Station
Providence, RI
March 1st, 2013 at 10:08PM

Another night shot from last Friday night.  Had a blast.  Still cannot wait for the warmer weather though.

Info:

"Manchester Street Power Station, located on 12 acres in Providence, Rhode Island, produces enough electricity to power about 112,000 homes, using natural gas as its fuel.

Manchester Street consists of three combined-cycle generating units, which produce electricity and steam for industrial use.

Each unit produces 150 megawatts and is equipped with dry low-NOx combustors and a selective catalytic reduction system to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides.

Dominion purchased the station in January 2005.

Brief Facts
Net Generating Capacity: 450 megawatts

Leading to the Charles M. Braga Jr. Memorial Bridge
March 1st, 2013
Fall River, MA

It has been years since I last shot this section of my home town. Last time I shot it, I was still shooting film. It gets pretty busy on Friday night.

History of the bridge that is off in the distance:

"The Charles M. Braga Jr. Memorial Bridge, also known as the Braga Bridge, is a high-level crossing that carries Interstate 195 over the Taunton River between the town of Somerset and the city of Fall River, near the mouth of the Quequechan River at the confluence with Mount Hope Bay. At just over a mile long, it is one of the longest bridges in Massachusetts. Opened to traffic in 1966, it provides an important link between Providence, Rhode Island, New Bedford and Cape Cod."

Providence River / Iway Bridge
March 1st, 2013
Providence, RI at 10:16PM

I have always wanted to shoot in this section of Providence during the day but found myself here at night. I love the looks of this bridge. It looks smaller when you just look at it as opposed to driving over it.

Some cool info on the bridge:

"The Providence River Bridge in Providence, Rhode Island is a network arch bridge -- first one I've seen live -- at the mouth of the Providence River at the northern tip of Narragansett Bay. It's apparently the widest network arch bridge in the world -- seven lanes of traffic across, plus room for pedestrians. It was part of a renovation project a few years back that moved the I-95/I-195 intersection from its old position in the middle of the city to its current spot behind the Fox Point hurricane barrier, which you can see in front... more »

India Point Park
Providence, RI

I ended up with my fellow photographer and friend, Greg MacKay, at India Point in Providence. It is even a cool spot for night photography! Who would have thought. I would have liked it if it would have been a little warmer.

Some info:
"India Point is a centerpiece in Rhode Island history: Roger Williams landed nearby on the banks of the Seekonk River in 1636, then canoed along what is now the Park’s shoreline to the fresh water spring just up the Providence River. During the 1700’s, the bustling port at India Point launched countless trading voyages to the East and West Indies, giving the area its name. After 1850, waves of immigrants — primarily Irish, Cape Verdean, Azorean, and Portuguese — landed at India Point, which teemed with steamships. The present-day Park was created in 1974 out ofrailroad... more »

After the 2013 Blizzard Nemo

One of my boys finally makes his way through the igloo tunnel that he is making with his brother. Success! I have never seen them so happy to work at something so long. It was pretty awesome watching them.

Castle Hill Light
February 3rd, 2013
Newport, RI

Spent some time out shooting with fellow photog +Harry Davila .

I hadn't a clue where to head out today so I took a chance and stopped by this lighthouse. I had never been. I shouldn't have gone, it was frigid and windy. Great spot though!

History: "Castle Hill, at the westernmost point of Newport, was the site of a watchtower built in 1740. It was an obvious site for a light and fog signal to aid mariners heading to Newport Harbor and up Narragansett Bay's East Passage toward Providence.

In 1869, the Lighthouse Board's annual report made the case for such an aid:

Applications have been made at various times in the past, and renewed this year, for a light-house and fog signal on Castle Hill, to guide vessels, especially in thick and foggy weather, into Newport Harbor... more »

The Westborough Insane Asylum
Westborough, MA

History: "Almost 10 years after Danvers State Hospital was opened, construction started for Westboro State Hospital in 1884. With 600 plus acres of land and located on Chauncy Lake it was a promising place for it's new patients. In 1886 it opened it's doors to the public. On the property was the Talbot Building which was a former state reform school built in 1848. In later years the state took it over and became part of the hospital. The complex had a Laundry room, a Theater, Cottages, Male and Female buildings. Westboro would be the first to use homeopathic medicines to treat its patients unlike most hospitals of its time. Overtime when a ward or section of the hospital would no longer be in use, they would seal it up. Basically sectioning off the hospital until the only active part... more »
