Introducing the HUD: +Ubuntu's greatest #UI feature yet -> http://goo.gl/hN0lm

The moment I saw this in action, a spark went off in my head.

This is it, it said. This is how we should be interacting with apps.

Mark Shuttleworth, +Canonical's "Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator For Life", has coined the term "intenterface" and that is exactly right.

I've already read complaints, largely from long-term Linux users, about how this is "ugly", or "stupid" or "gimmicky". This isn't a critical nor even an accurate analysis of the UI. More, this is an expression of fear of change, something most people are afraid of.

The thing is, this UI approach, is based on a very simple concept. Ready? Here it is:

The user shouldn't need to learn the interface, the... more »

I hear this statement a lot: I can't start over on another social network.

The image below is how my brain processes that statement visually. Then, I give them a perplexed look. Just like tools, your social networks evolve in better ways.

This is how my brain views them:

Does anyone actually click "share this" buttons?

I'm not asking in a cynical way; I'm asking because I actually want to know. Recently, I launched an animated GIF about SOPA and it received more traffic than I've ever seen in my career as a comic artist -- and it didn't contain a single "share this" button.

I've always believed that if you want your content to bloom on the internet, you need to spend more time creating great content and less time worrying about a bunch of douchey social media crap. The key to becoming a successful comedian, musician, writer, or artist on the internet isn't to slather your website in "like this" buttons. It's to craft songs, pictures, or words that flood our brains with buckets of happy sauce.

Reinforcing this idea was reddit's recent blog post about getting 2 billion page... more »

METAL BANDS/MUSICIANS CIRCLE
Choose your favourites, add them to your circles, and share it!

It seems that many Metal bands/musicians have joined G+ but aren't receiving the attention they deserve. Use this list of pages/profiles to spread the word!

Note that in no way is this list complete, and I'm not completely sure if the pages/profiles listed here are really the official ones (even though they seem to be or claim to be). I invite you to add/modify to this circle as appropriate.

P.S. This idea based on a discussion with +Lance Dunn.

A Roll Cloud Over Uruguay

What kind of cloud is this? A roll cloud. These rare long clouds may form near advancing cold fronts. In particular, a downdraft from an advancing storm front can cause moist warm air to rise, cool below its dew point, and so form a cloud. When this happens uniformly along an extended front, a roll cloud may form. Roll clouds may actually have air circulating along the long horizontal axis of the cloud. A roll cloud is not thought to be able to morph into a tornado. Unlike a similar shelf cloud, a roll cloud, a type of Arcus cloud, is completely detached from their parent cumulonimbus cloud.

Our Food Under The Microscope by Caren Alpert
What does our food look like at a microscopic level? This is the kind of question that prompted San-Francisco photographer Caren Alpert to begin her impressive series entitled Terra Cibus. By sending off a wide variety of food ingredients to a lab in Arizona, she was able to find out the answer. There, a scanning electron microscope helped to capture these photographs only after the food items had been dehydrated and coated in a conductive metal. These close-up views offer a very new and interesting look of the foods we are in contact with on a nearly daily basis. Alpert's Terra Cibus series will be on display at the James Beard Foundation in New York till the end of the month.

Several years ago, I visited a village in India and saw a child who had recently contracted Polio. We learned a lot and gave some of the vaccine drops to a child. With tremendous effort and over $1B spent, India has had no new reported cases for one year. Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only remaining countries left with Polio. I'm not responsible for any of this -- it has been the hard work of huge numbers of people, but I'm really happy to see this milestone.

Welcome Stream

In my opinion, most new G+ members come over, add a few people to their circles, post a few things to their stream, find it empty, and go back bored.

The main reason they go back has always been "There's no activity on G+". So why not show them where the action is at?

Instead of an empty stream to begin with, and instead of the "suggested user list", why not pick up the best posts from all G+ history and show it as a "Welcome Stream" ?

The Welcome Stream will contain the most popular G+ posts in history, while having popups which guide new users to the features of G+. In this way, new users will have a chance to see the level of interaction that goes on, be able to choose people to add to circles, and have a reason to come back (since the Welcome Stream would update each day).

Of course, the... more »

Always knew that JS Bach was a clever sod, to say his contribution to the development of western music and harmony is almost without equal would be far from contentious in the eyes of most music scholars. But here's some further evidence to demonstrate his genius, a musical sequence that is to be played right to left as well and left to right and both ways at once as counterpoint. Shine on you crazy diamond. Today is the birthday of Syd Barrett, born Roger Keith Barrett in 1946.

• Barrett, who died in 2006, founded Pink Floyd with bass guitarist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Rick Wright in 1965. In1967, Pink Floyd released the singles Arnold Layne (banned by the BBC) and See Emily Play , both written by Syd, and the album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn , again mostly composed by Syd and considered to be one of the greatest British psychedelic albums.

• Sadly, Syd's fall was as meteoric as his rise. His behavior became increasing erratic and he eventually spent the last 35 years of his life away from the public eye.

• A self portrait of the singer was stolen from the London Idea Generation Gallery, but returned unharmed after a plea was made by the late singer’s girlfriend.See it here:http://... more »
