Tiny "Tractor Beam" Created by Physics Duo

Named after sci-fi tech from Star Trek, a "tractor beam" is a device using energy to pull an object towards it. New work by David Ruffner and David Grier of New York University demonstrate that such a device might be possible.

Their work is based on Bessel beams from a type of laser that directs light in concentric circles around a single dot, instead of a single beam. Light from a Bessel beam, at the dot, is not diffracted and because the dot is formed by light from the circles, it can reform if it encounters an object in its path. This property allows for pulling a particle.

Warp Drive: Science Fiction to Science Fact? Maybe!

In 1994, physicist Miguel Alcubierre proposed a concept for a real-life warp drive, but calculations found it required prohibitive amounts of energy. Now +NASA physicists say that adjustments can be made to Alcubierre's drive to use significantly less energy, maybe bringing warp drive back from sci-fi to science.

To begin, NASA hopes experiments with a "White-Juday Warp Field Interferometer" will generate and detect microscopic instances of little warp bubbles.

Engineers Monitor Heart Health Using Paper-Thin Flexible 'Skin'

Zhenan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering, has developed a skin-like #heart monitor no wider than a postage stamp. Worn on the wrist, the flexible skin-like monitor is sensitive enough to help doctors detect stiff arteries and #cardiovascular problems.

Sensors like this may someday continuously track heart #health and provide doctors a safer method of measuring a key vital sign for newborns and other high-risk surgery patients.

After five months aboard the International Space Station, #ISS Commander +Chris Hadfield is scheduled to return to Earth later today, Monday, May 13.

Visual effects pioneer Ray #Harryhausen passed away today. To remember Ray, I'd like to share this photo I snapped while touring the headquarters of #Lucasfilm and #ILM (Industrial Lights and Magic). They're located in the Letterman Digital Arts Center at the #Presidio of San Francisco in California. The now former #LucasArts HQ was here also.

It was explained to me that Ray would sign this print each time he visited the headquarters.

Ray #Harryhausen died today, May 7. The visual effects creator, writer and producer created a brand of stop-motion #animation called "Dynamation". His important works include Mighty Joe Young, winning 1949's Academy Award for special effects; The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, his first color film; Jason and the Argonauts, with film #history's famous seven skeletons sword fight; and Clash of the Titans, his last film (amzn.to/harryhausen).

Coit Tower in San Francisco

A photo I snapped of Coit Tower one late night roaming +The Streets of San Francisco in California.

Also known as the Lillian Coit Memorial Tower, this is a 210-foot (64 meter) tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood. The tower was built in 1933 in Pioneer Park using Lillie Hitchcock Coit's bequest to beautify San Francisco.

The tower's art deco #architecture was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard, with fresco murals by 27 different on-site artists and their numerous assistants, plus two more paintings installed after creation off-site.

Getting a Brain Boost Through Exercise

In the '90s scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies first discovered #exercise bulks up the brain. The groundbreaking experiment showed mice given #running wheels produced far more memory creating #brain cells than animals that didn't run. The exercised rats then performed better on memory tests than their sedentary labmates.

#Science has since then been trying to understand precisely how exercise improves #cognition at a molecular level and if all types of exercise are beneficial. Two new experiments suggest different types of exercise affect the brain and #cognitive function quite differently. This New York Times post reports the details.

Researchers Create "Next-Generation" Alzheimer's Disease Model

According to a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience, a new genetically engineered lab rat with the full array of #brain changes associated with Alzheimer's supports the concept that increases in beta-amyloid in the brain causes the disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related brain disorder that gradually destroys a one's memory and other thinking and mental abilities. It's the most common form of #dementia. Plaque-forming beta-amyloid molecules derive from a larger protein called amyloid precursor protein (APP). One hypothesis is that increases in beta-amyloid initiate brain degeneration.

LucasArts Shutdown Leads to ILM Layoffs

A long-used strategy at #Lucasfilm is to share technical resources and employees among their businesses in visual effects, animation and video games. But with yesterday's #LucasArts shutdown and the recent cancellation of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated TV series, #ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) is now left with only their visual effects work for film and television. This leaves them over-staffed and is leading to layoffs.
