I've been a bit behind on +Aaron's World, but I just caught up and wanted to share the most recent episode. It's a really good explanation of the way vaccines work, and why they're important.
Plus, this is one of my absolutely favorite podcasts. Highly recommend it if you haven't heard it yet.

As both a fledgling geologist and a child of the computer age, I have mixed feelings about this. I think there's a lot of utility to technology in the field, but the field really isn't a gadget friendly place. I've wrecked two digital cameras and one GPS on digs, and those were relatively sturdy pieces of equipment. So, while I definitely approve of geology working to catch up with the rest of the world, technologically, I highly doubt paper notebooks and brunton compasses are going anywhere anytime soon.

It really was a great conference. Lots of people wrote reviews, and I may add my own in the next few days. But this should hold you if you're interested in what happened there.

Typically don't share much political commentary, and the opinions presented in this article may or may not reflect my personal views, but... this was too cute not to share. Entirely because I love the way kids look at the world, and I definitely had a phase where everything was Harry Potter as well.

Too Hot To Handle?
Let's hope that anthropocentric-accelerated climate change does not push our ecosystem to this extreme of a warming.

Thanks to +Will Houghteling for giving me the heads up on this. Who said science couldn't be cute! Please share this and make yourself smile today! #sciencesunday #scienceeveryday #stemwomen

New Dinosaur: Pegomastax africanus
"The newly identified Pegomastax africanus (thick jaw from Africa) is a strange new anomaly in the dinosaur world. When it roamed the planet more than 200 million years ago, it was less than 2 feet long and didn't even weigh as much as a housecat--making it one of the smallest dinos ever--and it definitely wasn't as likable as a housecat: despite it probably being a herbivore, it had 1-inch-long fangs and porcupine-style quills."

Have you ever wondered what the STEM fields were? Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics! Each of these disciplines impacts our daily lives and yet we know so little about what goes on behind the scenes within the STEM fields.
Join us as the +STEM Women on G+, +Buddhini Samarasinghe, +Rajini Rao and +Liz Krane give us the inside scoop on the 'real' STEM and how it shapes our world today.

Sigh. I'm not surprised, but it's unfortunate to see the studies that this bias does persist.

Why science and education need support
Project Exploration has been a great program, but because of financial strain, it's considering shutting down. It's a tough economy, but it's really sad to see programs like this go.

Hands-On Activities for High Schoolers Effectively Teach About Antibiotics
A hands-on project to educate high schoolers about appropriate antibiotic use was highly effective, promoting more sophisticated understandings of bacteria and antibiotics and increasing understanding of the dangers of antibiotic resistance, and was even enjoyable, as reported Sep. 12 in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

"...this is a complicated topic with several grey areas. First, how do you define "being feminine"? That is an important distinction that these articles often overlook. Second, having someone to relate to is less important than being raised in a family environment where the child (boy or girl) is being exposed to science and technology extensively. It seems to me that the effort of advocating science to girls using feminine role models is like the people that value the importance of having objects over the importance of having ideas. We need to put less emphasis on who's doing science and more on the accomplishments of those actively researching in science.
On a more practical level, there is a reason why we don't have a lot of feminine females in science. Based on these popular videos and articles, people seem to equate being feminine to women who dress nice, who wear f... more »

Where do you draw the line with woo? If something makes you feel better, even if you know it's not really scientific, will you still use it? Or does that compromise your skepticism?
