This is not a photo of tulips.

Yes, it seems obvious, but it was supposed to be a photo of tulips….perhaps vibrant red tulips dancing under a clear blue sky or yellow tulips swaying in the breeze of an approaching storm. It didn't really matter as long as there were tulips in the frame, just a few brilliant colorful blooms of spring in front of my lens.

Foiled again by the revengeful little flowers!

Every spring the internet is filled with bright and beautiful images from the Skagit Valley. It’s downright embarrassing that during my eight years in Seattle, I've never visited the tulip fields in their April glory. They are less than sixty minutes away but each and every time I plan a trip, something comes up and thwarts my intentions.

My son is sick…the camera breaks…I am sick…the car breaks down…my son is sick again…the list goes on andon.

High above Santa Barbara, is a rock formation called Lizard's Mouth. When I went to school, it was well known as a hangout for the late night party crowd. However, there was an upside to the rowdy scene. Given it's reputation for carousing, you were almost guaranteed to have the place all to yourself at sunrise. To the best of my knowledge, no drunken reveler ever fell from the rocks while I was living there...somewhat of a minor miracle.

My son and I made a last minute dash down to Picnic Point after he decided he would rather go to the beach and watch sunset than watch a storm chasing video together (both pretty good options in my mind anyway). Who should come strolling across the beach at the last minute, but +Michael Riffle who must have hauled #$$ from work to make it in time. The sunset never exploded but clouds in the sky were cool and it was great talking to Michael and trading ideas on locations in the area.

Every year at about this time, the rain starts to get to me and I get an incredible craving to jump into the car and head to the deserts in California. A chance to run across the sand dunes, to watch the desert flowers open after a brilliant sunrise, or to hike up a barren canyon to an oasis of palm trees. Next year, I swear I am going to pull my son out of school for a couple of weeks and hit the road :)

When we were living in Portland, one of favorite photo strategies was to try to catch sunset as a storm was clearing. I would watch the radar all day and if the trailing cold front was approaching offshore, I would hop in the car and make a dash for the coast. The front and I would usually meet with a heavy downpour somewhere over the Coast Range and the driving would get dicey but the results were often worth the effort.

I keep a panic bag in my office...not the kind to stave off impending social collapse or world doom but packed with goodies to take advantage of any last minute light. It is a small bag, easily stuffed into a backpack, filled with only the essentials, and designed to travel light and fast. Inside are my Nikon body, two zoom lenses, a couple of graduated neutral density filters, polarizing filter, remote release, and a backup battery....everything I need to create something out of nearly every situation. So now, when conditions start to improve without any warning, we can gulp down our dinner, leave the dishes on the table, and be out the door in minutes. That is assuming my son is not dragging his heels ;) Do you have a "photo panic" bag always packed and what is in yours?

This sky last June was definitely the craziest I'd seen in a long time. Clouds at different levels were streaming so quickly in opposite directions that setting up a composition involved as much luck as skill. I don't remember intentionally composing this scene but it ended up on my flashcard anyway. I'll take it :)

I probably should have been processing images this weekend but I spent it building LEGOs with my son, getting in some quality bonding time over a bin of plastic blocks. So instead of anything recent to offer, I'm digging deep into the files from my California days during the olden age of film. I've posted images from this week in Yosemite before. Wildfires burning in the area created some amazing lighting conditions that never seemed to stop. It's been over 15 years since that night at Olmsted Point, but I can still vividly remember standing on the white granite while my bride-to-be sat nearby, probably wondering what she was getting herself into :)

Some images are successful the moment you hit the shutter release. Some images jump to life after a little coaxing on the computer. Then there are shots like this...the one that sits on your hard drive forever. I wanted it to work. I came back to it, played with the image, grew frustrated, and tossed out my efforts...again and again and again. Finally I was happy with the result. Not ecstatic perhaps, but happy enough to finally click "Save."

Since my wife had to work today, my son and I spent the afternoon wandering around Whidbey Island. We played at some playgrounds, explored the dark passageways at Fort Casey, threw rocks in the water, and walked some beaches. The little guy was even patient while I worked through a couple of compositions at Keystone Spit....life is looking up :)

Sometimes the alarm goes off and outside, you see nothing but a completely overcast sky. A little voice in your head keeps telling you to roll back over and grab another hour or two of sleep. It is way too cold out there to waste your time. There is no way this could ever break in time for sunrise. You ignore the voice, drag yourself out of bed, and head off into the nighttime chill because you just never know....

If you are looking for a screaming sunset, you hope for clouds. Clouds give texture to the sky, they reflect the colors of the setting sun, and create layers and give depth to the composition.

But there is something incredibly satisfying about a clear sky at sunset....that chance to witness the singular moment when day becomes night. Sunshine leaves not in an explosion of color, but with a quiet moment of contemplation. A cacophony of daytime sounds disappear and are replaced with the quiet symphony of twilight. Rushing movements of the bright landscape are traded for the slower, more thoughtful pace of the dark. The light dims, fades away and finally disappears altogether, leaving you alone with your thoughts and anticipating tomorrow.

Brilliant sunsets may flood you with a sense of excitement but a clear twilight sky fills your mind with a sense of peace.
