I know it's a busy photo, but again, I was trying something different, using the fabric to create a moody sort of still life effect. I already know there are some issues with the photo, but I'm happy to hear what you all have to say about it.

Shot with a Canon 5DmkII, 24-105mm f4/L lens (focal length at 65mm) 1/25 shutterspeed, f8.0, at 1600iso, handheld. Did minimal post-process (mostly contrast and bringing up shadows, also reducing a little noise). Diffused indirect sunlight coming from the back left (about 10 o'clock) as well as from the right (3 o'clock).

It came to my attention (via +Lou Horton ) that when you upload a new large cover photo, the default viewing of the image cuts off the top of image. So, in light of that, I've updated my photoshop template to show where that cut off is in terms of live area. Please download my revised PSD template!

Slightly off topic (moderators feel free to delete if you feel this is inappropriate), but Google+ has rolled out new updated cover photos, with new sizes (it's huge!).

I've created a handy template for those who want to update their cover photo. The new large size of the cover photo is a great way to show off your food photo skills! My template is a layered PSD file (saved in Photoshop CS6) which shows the appropriate pixel size as well as the placement of where your profile photo, name and other information will be placed on the photo. Enjoy.

The appropriate pixel size for the new cover photo is 1160px x 655px, but the attached PSD file (saved as a Photoshop CS6) has layers so you can tell where your photo and name will fall on the image. Just thought I'd share my thinking behind one of my recent photos for a blog post. It's a rather conventional photo, but sometimes it's the most conventional photos that can reveal something. As always thoughts, comments and constructive criticism is always welcome.

I'm lucky that most of my photographs are of subjects that inherently are pretty. Cakes, pies, even cookies are easier to photograph than stews, curries and slabs of meat. But recently I made a chocolate bread pudding - specifically a dark chocolate sweet potato bread pudding - and realized that it was going to be hard to photograph. I needed to figure out a way to show the way the top of the bread pudding caramelized with the sugar as well as the bright orange bread itself that was the sweet potato bread, all the while still emphasizing that it was a chocolate dessert, a chocolate bread pudding dessert.

Lately I've been bored with my food photography and feel like I'm falling into a rut. For instance, I originally did a granola photoshoot for my blog in a more traditional way, all rustic in a jar placed on a piece of distressed wood. It felt very staged and very much done (isn't that how EVERYONE shoots granola?) though I did use one of the photos for my recipe image. 

For my lead photo though, I decided to push myself and go in the exact opposite direction and shoot with a more upscale magazine sensibility. Since I don't have a light table at home and the granola is small, I put a piece of acetate over my iPad and turned on an app called "whiteboard" that allows you to draw all over the white board with your finger. Of course if you don't draw on it, it's completely white and can be used as an ersatz light table.
