The new Google+: My cover photo is so large that it takes up half my screen. My posts are smaller and more difficult to read. Posts in multiple columns, however, is a more efficient use of space. The working title for the #DoctorWho 50th Anniversary special appears to be Blue Amends! There was a read-through today!

Upate: +Daf Griffiths says "Blue Amends" refers to changes in the script from the previous draft! It just says "50th Anniversary Special!" So funny!

I clicked on a link in Twiiter that was not what I expected. It was one of those work at home scams. When I tried to close the page, there was a message box that asked me if I really wanted to do that. I didn't dare click on that box. I tried to close my browser but couldn't. I panicked and shut down my computer. Maybe I should have just Ctrl-Alt-Del and shut down my browser that way, but I didn't think of it. I restarted my computer and checked my Twitter account for bad apps and didn't find any. Is there anything else I need to check for?

As my family was sitting down to dinner tonight, a big boom shook our house. I thought a car hit the house and my husband thought something big fell upstairs. We looked around the house and nothing was amiss. Now there are four helicopters flying in the airspace around our house. We heard on the news that there was a huge explosion at an auto parts store just down the street from us. We don't live in Fitchburg (thank goodness), but we live nearby. #fitchburgexplosion

+Amy Sundberg introduced me to The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and now I'm hooked. I've watched all 76 episodes....that have been published. I didn't know until the last video that there are eight more episodes coming.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is based on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. It was created and executive produced by Hank Green and Bernie Su.

West Wing Reunion!
I have mixed feelings about this clip. I like that it reminds voters in Michigan not to miss the nonpartisan section of their ballot. It is also a very partisan political ad for Bridget Mary McCormack, the sister of West Wing actress, Mary McCormack. Now They've Trained the 'Robot Mule' to Follow a Marine

The  Legged Squad Support System robot known as the AlphaDog is amazing at all-terrain locomotion. And it can walk 20 miles carrying 400 pounds of gear. And they've made it ten times quieter than it was in January.

Now Boston Dynamics, working with the US Marine Corps, have taught the AlphaDog to follow orders via radio. They can even command it to follow a specific Marine, and it will. 

I want one.

Is purdah a form of slut shaming?
It is not my intention to offend anyone but I'm genuinely curious. Purdah is the practice of concealing women from men in the Muslim and other cultures. Women are expected to dress modestly or to conceal themselves and are not considered respectable if they do not. In Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, there are severe punishments for violating sharia, the Muslim law for conduct and dress.
What are the reasons for this practice? Does this mean that it is thought that men cannot control themselves around women unless the provocative female form is covered? Does this indicate a rape culture?
I'm aware that there are many Muslim women who proudly choose to wear burkas and hajabs as is their custom and I would not have them do otherwise. This Westerner is just trying to understand something she perceives as an unfair burden of responsibility forinv... more »

Long concentrated among minorities, motherhood outside marriage now varies by class about as much as it does by race. It is growing fastest in the lower reaches of the white middle class — among women like Ms. Schairer who have some postsecondary schooling but no four-year degree.

What's interesting to me about this article is that it suggests that the long-standing racial divisions in the country are gradually but systematically being replaced by class divisions which are related, but not quite the same. The class lines are drawn by type of work, education, family structure, and so on – many of which are the sorts of cross-generational things that can lead to the evolution of stable social classes.

HEAVEN - Tony and Yvonne were 85 years old and had been married for sixty years.  Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because Tony watched their pennies.
