US-Expats or people who want to be.... consider this:
Yet despite FATCA’s trillion-dollar price tag, the Wall Street Journal reports that the US government has taken in just $13.5 billion in revenue from hidden foreign accounts that FATCA is supposed to eliminate.
Obviously the cost vastly exceeds the benefit. It’s insane. Plus FATCA has driven nearly 15,000 Americans to renounce the citizenship since President Obama signed it into law in 2010.
These former Americans are often criticized for taking such a controversial step, one that is derided as being “unpatriotic”.
This criticism makes no sense when you take a larger view of history.
The State Department estimates that there are up to 6 million Americans living abroad.

Given the average size of a Congressional district at roughly 700,000 citizens, there should theoretically be eight members of Congress representing the interests of Americans living abroad.
Yet expats have no representation. There is not a single person in Congress fighting for expats, even though they are still subject to pay tax.
More than 240 years ago, residents of the colonies had a term for this. They called it “Taxation without Representation”. This idea is as old as America itself.
And in 1776, American colonists divorced themselves from the British government. Much of this was tax motivated.
In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson expressly writes that among the reasons for independence is “imposing taxes on us without our consent.”
Former US citizens are following in these footsteps.___

From Wikipedia: some suggestions to help people who are looking for less expensive options:
Consumer Reports said that another option was the generic autoinjector Adrenaclick by Impax Laboratories, which they found selling for $142 at retail stores. A pharmacist told Consumer Reports that Adrenaclick and EpiPen have the same drug in the same doses, but there are differences in how they are used, so Adrenaclick users must be trained in its use.[31][32][33] Consumer reports said that another, cheaper option was using standard syringes and filling them manually from vials of epinephrine. This requires training and the shelf-life of an epinephrine vial is only three months compared to 12 to 18 months for the EpiPen and Adrenaclick.

Wonder what hoops US expats have to jump thru for the IRS? This article outlines some of the difficulties.
And this is toned down. In some cases US expats have not been able to open bank accounts, or the IRS has insisted that a non-US spouses income be US-taxed as well.....

Not a happy situation. Not at all. And I am hip deep in it. I am an expat.

US Expats
The ACA is, and has been working for fairer, easier Tax laws for us expats. This is a statement made to a committee asking for information about taxpayers all across the US. And the ACA highlighted problems US Expats face - penalized for living out of country.
The ACA site is worth knowing as an US Expat, and has a wide range of information. And they respond quickly to questions and are interested in communication, hearing the problems people are having with taxes and sometimes can help.

A long read.

'Cashless society' is a euphemism for the "ask-your-banks-for-permission-to-pay society".

The 'shadow economy' is a derogatory term used by elites to describe the economic activities of people they neither understand nor care about.

... cash hampers central banks from setting negative interest rates. In the absence of cash, everyone must keep their money in the form of digital bank deposits. During recessions central banks could then use the banking system to deliberately corrode people's deposits via negative charges, 'inspiring' them to spend rather than hoard.

And so we get Visa's Cashfree and Proud campaign. If people really were ashamed of cash, they wouldn't need ads to tell them. Visa must engineer that shame to teach you that what you want is the same as what they want. And if you don't want it, just remember that cashless society is inevitable. Don't get left behind.___Paying by card is convenient. And comes with a non-cash price.

And fear not, the Germans are onside, along with the criminals, the homeless, the street-side buskers and an army of people whose lives will never get a five-star rating on a mainstream reputation scoring system. We will forge alliances with purveyors of non-bank alternative currency systems; and yes, we will maintain the option to use our payment cards. Because what we fight for is precisely that. The option.

Excerpts:
Ted Cruz shares many of Trump’s character traits – including a massive narcissistic ego, a penchant for crowd-pleasing populist rhetoric and an aggressive, attack-dog style against opponents.
Where they differ, crucially, is that Cruz is deadly serious and very deliberate about every word he says, and has spent years plotting and scheming to radically change America forever.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruz is not, as many believe Trump to be, just pandering to the hard-line Conservative right in America, he IS the hard-line Conservative right in America; a brutally ideological zealot who wants to drag his country kicking and screaming back to the very dark days of bigoted fear and hatred of government.
Consider some of his basic, very entrenched beliefs:
He’s opposed to any kind of same-sex marriage or civil union, believing marriage should be between ‘one man and one woman’. Such is his utter intolerance of all things homosexual, he even attacked the mayor of Dallas for marching in a gay pride parade.
He resolutely supports the death penalty.
He voted against the Violence Against Women Act.
He’s anti all abortion, including for pregnancies caused by rape and incest.
He wants to slash funding to Planned Parenthood.
He repeatedly claims that more guns mean less crime, despite all statistical evidence to the contrary. In fact, he's so gun-mad, even by Republican standards, that he makes breakfast for his family by wrapping pieces of bacon around a machine gun.
He denies the very existence of man-made climate change.
He’s so driven by his Christian religious beliefs that he opposes any notion of separating Church and State. ‘Any president,’ he said, ‘who doesn’t begin every day on his knees isn’t fit to be Commander-in-Chief.’
He claims Christians can’t be terrorists and have committed no such acts of terror for hundreds of years.
He wants police to ‘patrol and secure Muslim neighbourhoods inside America’ – an act described as ‘terrifying’ by U.S. Muslims.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Trump wouldn’t be nearly as dangerous as people fear.
Cruz would be considerably more dangerous than people realize.

So, if you see a thumb-drive on the street,
1) take it along so no one else will,
2) do NOT plug it inot your computer unless you are a security specialist and have a PC specifically to check something like this out.

A USB Hack Can Occur Even Without a Flash Drive

Maybe you are the person who would walk right past that flash drive in the parking lot. But the risk isn’t just with these drives. Hackers can also embed the USB drive into components that need to be plugged in anyway: the end of a keyboard plug, for instance, can be the perfect portal to take down an entire sensitive network. There have already been examples of hackers and researchers hosting malware packages inside the firmware of a device like a mouse. Firmware is code that lives in the read-only embedded memory of a device and tells the hardware how to work. It’s meant to only run inside the device, but it’s possible to change this code for malicious purposes. Oh, and it’s not possible for antivirus programs to scan this type of code.___So, if you see a thumb-drive on the street,
1) take it along so no one else will,

People who have the point of view that Bernie Sanders sold out: What would your expectation be- what "should" he have done?
And note: he endorsed Hillary, he did not concede.
He is pragmatic. He is working for change. And he is working in a certain framework. He tried for the framework "POTUS", but for whatever reasons (not going into that!) he didn't get that framework. So, he changes the framework.... not the goals.
Do you see him having changed goals? (Citations please)

Quote:
His speech was a clear attempt at convincing his supporters to stick with him for the long haul, whatever happens next. “Election days come and go,” Sanders said. “But political and social revolutions that attempt to transform our society never end.”

Who wants a real election? Or better, who does not?

7 Minutes To Steal The Vote: Our Democracy “Astonishingly Vulnerable To Hackers” http://rgn.bz/h7Pa

by Claire Bernish

A professor from Princeton University and a graduate student just proved electronic voting machines in the U.S. remain astonishingly vulnerable to hackers — and they did it in under eight minutes.

In fact, Professor Andrew Appel and grad student Alex Halderman took just seven minutes to break into the authentic Sequoia AVC Advantage electronic voting machine Appel purchased for $82 online — one of the oldest models, but still in use Louisiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia, Politico reported.

After Halderman picked the hulking, 250-pound machine’s lock in seven seconds flat, Appel wrested its four ROM chips from a circuit board — an easy feat, considering the chips weren’t soldered in place.

Once freed, Appel could facilely replace the ROM chips with his own version “of modified firmware that could throw off the machine’s results, subtly altering the tally of votes, never to betray a hint to the voter,” Politico’s Ben Wofford explained.

Appel and a team of other so-called cyber-academics have hacked into various models of electronic voting machines in order to prove to the public the equipment is ridiculously bereft of security. Together with Ed Felten, Appel and a group of Princeton students “relentlessly hacked one voting machine after another … reprogramming one popular machine to play Pac-Man; infecting popular models with self-duplicating malware; [and] discovering keys to voting machine locks that could be ordered on eBay.”

Their efforts have gone largely ignored for 15 years.

Quote D. Trump:

On March 16, Trump was asked about which foreign-policy consultants he was speaking to. “I’m speaking with myself, number one, because I have a very good brain,” he said, apparently seriously. “I know what I’m doing, and I listen to a lot of people, I talk to a lot of people, and at the appropriate time, I’ll tell you who the people are. But my primary consultant is myself, and I have a good instinct for this stuff.”

Apathy reigns?
Or we say "I don't believe statistics I haven't massaged myself"?
Or just don't believe?
Or consider the theory that the information is / will be suppressed?

All in all- nothing?

Alternatively, does anyone know what could be done with this info? Could someone take the time to sue? Would it have to be done state by state?

I would sit down and laugh till I threw up if a) DTrump decises to back out of the race and b) Sanders was instated as the voted candidate.
2 Parties, 2 candidates, and then new candidates for BOTH parties...... a new ballgame.

Should I wish for that? Would you?

The earliest form of English is called Old English or Anglo-Saxon (c. 550–1066 CE). Old English developed from a set of North Sea Germanic dialects originally spoken along the coasts of Frisia, Lower Saxony, Jutland, and Southern Sweden by Germanic tribes known as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. In the fifth century, the Anglo-Saxons settled Britain and the Romans withdrew from Britain. By the seventh century, the Germanic language of the Anglo-Saxons became dominant in Britain, replacing the languages of Roman Britain (43–409 CE): Common Brittonic, a Celtic language, and Latin, brought to Britain by the Roman occupation. England and English (originally Englaland and Englisc) are named after the Angles

Byron does cool art. And he is a "struggling" artist- ie. he needs $$

If you have a thing for cats and zombies, need a present for someone who does, or just wants a piece of art-
consider buying from him.

Over and over: so what if he isn't POTUS.
The change can, will, should continue. And each of us can add a drop of skill, time, resource, imagination, power, money... what ever we can and want to.
But we have to want to, and do it... he can't do it alone.

Anyone else see a business opportunity here?
There seems to be a possibility of an accompanying industry: penetration test contractors or companies. Offering services to test and find vulnerabilities in your IoT offering. Possibly with additional "fix-it" service.

Interesting is that my department (IT in a large logistics company with a high profile) has a robust IT-Security department. Because we deal with customer data and money, it would be a worst case scenario if data got hacked.

And now my company is starting to offer "IoT" hardware. And you can bet "penetration" tests are done!

"All our favorite foods...." WTF?!?!
We depend on pollinators, plants depend on pollinators to seed and propogate.
It is not "our favorite foods". Food supply in general is what we are talking about.  Headline fail.
Not only is the mere subject horrifying, the attitude expressed in the last two paragraphs by "Achim Steiner, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)" translates to me as "Oh, well, I guess we do actually have to realize that we might have to take a bit care of the environment that we seem to be embedded in."

Yes, I am angry.

Thinking about writing a book?
Experiences in self publishing.

QUOTE: I’ve sold 2m copies of my five novels, but I am still not considered a ‘serious’ author because I self-publish.

QUOTE: Last week I looked at the complex set of spreadsheets I use to track my ebook sales and gave a whoop of delight: I had just sold my two-millionth book, something I would never in my wildest dreams have considered possible just over four years ago, particularly as the vast majority of those sales were achieved through self-publishing. Initially my most ambitious target had been to sell a thousand copies.___Thinking about writing a book?

Vote. Just... vote. I know what and who I would rather vote for, you probably do too. I do hope you will vote the way I would, and I would discuss "things" if you are of different opinion.

If you don't vote, you make other peoples vote count more. And then, live with what "they" voted for.

"Follow the money"
I am .... amazed. I have always known Ben & Jerry have been active, but I didn't really pay attention. There is so much to pay attention too, and I only have so many attention points to spend.....
I will be paying more attention to Ben & Jerry and posting their articles. They are thought provoking, relevant, not too long and not too overwhelming.
Unless you think about the material a little more deeply.......
Excellently geared to raise awareness and with solid information.

As +dPHender son says, a cool site to look at and compare the stances of the various candidates.
Get informed.

Seriously, I didn't know about this site.
http://presidential-candidates.insidegov.com

What with all the muckraking going on this year, I haven't seen much of anything that actually covers what the real issues are for any candidate. Seems like most of 'em are more concerned with what's wrong with the other guy.

So here's a cool site that covered all the candidates. You can compare any two, or several, or just look at one at a time. Very helpful.___As +dPHender son says, a cool site to look at and compare the stances of the various candidates.
