CLIMATE CHANGE? WHAT'S THAT?

At noon today in Washington DC, all mentions of "climate change" and "global warming" were eliminated from the White House website.

Well, not all. The word "climate" still shows up here:

President Trump is committed to eliminating harmful and unnecessary policies such as the Climate Action Plan....

Luckily, at the Azimuth Climate Data Backup Project, we've been preparing for exactly this. We've been racing to save publicly available climate data at NASA, NOAA, and other agencies that Trump now controls.

Please visit our Kickstarter page, learn more about what we've done, contribute some money, and help us out!

We plan to make our data publicly available, so we need money for servers and storage. Right now we can afford to hold it for about 3 years. 8 would be better.

Luckily, this week the head of U. C. Riverside's Computing and Communications department, Danna Gianforte, said they would commit to hosting our data over the long term! So, we will also work to transfer it there and set up a usable interface.

We're part of a larger initiative, ClimateMirror.org. Different teams are saving different databases. For example, the End of Term Archive has saved Obama's White House web pages.

You can read more about these efforts here:

http://climatemirror.org/

In the comments below, I will list some people who have helped the Azimuth Backup Project with their donations. One person contributed $2000, three contributed $1000 and two contributed $500. That's wonderful, and I thank these people immensely! But most of our success is due to large numbers of smaller contributions.

To see how "climate change" has now vanished from White House website, go here:

From personal experience- food makes a difference

I have no knowledge if this is deeply studied or if is a "fringe group". What I do know is that my nephew and his mother learned/experienced that certain foods were associated with his uncontrollable temper and actions.
My nephew at !age 8! realized for himself, that certain foods or food additives "made him feel bad and be bad" so he avoided those foods of his own choice.

So I am convinced that food has a large influence on children (probably adults as well) and so this is a signal boos.

And if it helps someone out there- then good.

Quoting +Cindy Brown 's header because of the information:
And there you go. Money talks.

I think it's important, if any of these are your senators & you have strong opinions on this, CALL them!

Senator Booker (NJ) - junior
Senator Murray (WA) - senior
Senator Casey (PA) - senior
Senator Bennet (CO) - senior

The Congressional switchboard number is: 202-224-3121:
say your state, and then 1 gets you your senior senator, 2 your junior.

Between 2010 and 2016, a handful of the Democratic senators who voted “nay” were amongst the top Senate recipients funded by pharmaceutical companies: Sen. Booker received $267,338; Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) received $254,649; Robert Casey (D-PA) received $250,730; Michael Bennet (D-CO) received $222,000. These defectors effectively killed the bill; it failed 46-52. Guess these senators are only progressive when it doesn’t hurt their bottom line.___The number to call to object to what these senators did and to object to their taking big pharma money.

The actions taken by #PeePeeDT and his cohorts. Think about the consequences....

If you are NOT freaked out, you are not paying attention.

JUST IN CASE YOU WERE FOCUSING ON TRUMP'S CHILDISH TWEETS......THIS IS WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING.

The federal week in review:
1. Trump fires all Ambassadors and Special Envoys, ordering them out by inauguration day.
2. House brings back the Holman rule allowing them to reduce an individual civil service, SES positions, or political appointee's salary to $1, effectively firing them by amendment to any piece of legislation. We now know why they wanted names and positions of people in Energy and State.
3. Senate schedules 6 simultaneous hearings on cabinet nominees and triple-books those hearings with Trump's first press conference in months and an ACA budget vote, effectively preventing any concentrated coverage or protest.
4. House GOP expressly forbids the Congressional Budget Office from reporting or tracking ANY costs related to the repeal of the ACA.
5. Trump continues to throw the intelligence community under the bus to protect Putin, despite the growing mountain of evidence that the Russians deliberately interfered in our election.
6. Trump breaks a central campaign promise to make Mexico pay for the wall by asking Congress (in other words, us, the taxpayers) to pay for it.
7. Trump threatens Toyota over a new plant that was never coming to the US nor will take jobs out of the US.
8. House passes the REINS act, giving them veto power over any rules enacted by any federal agency or department--for example, FDA or EPA bans a drug or pesticide, Congress can overrule based on lobbyists not science. Don't like that endangered species designation, Congress kills it.
We - progressive, liberal, libertarian and conservative - need to all wake up to what is actually happening to our beloved country.

I have nothing to add to this. except... read it.

This seems like a good practice.

--%< --

Experts in authoritarianism advise to keep a list of things subtly changing around you, so you'll remember. Here's my list for week 8:
(although the bar is high, this week was the most devastating for our country).
1. Trump announced he will make major policy announcements via Twitter.
2. Trump's executive producer credit appeared in the "Celebrity Apprentice" premiere.
3. Trump sent a divisive, incendiary New Year's tweet - as opposed to departing President Obama's warm and generous version.
4. On New Year's Day, Trump promised a revelation on hacking, either Tuesday or Wednesday. This was a lie - it never came.
5. In a puzzling exchange, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough tweeted that he spent New Year's Eve watching tv with his children, until a photo showed he and Mika chatting up Trump at Mar-a-Lago.
6. Trump appointed yet another Goldman Sachs executive to an economic leadership position, this one overseeing markets (SEC Chair). GS stock is up 35% since Election Day.
7. WSJ Editor Gerard Baker said his paper would not refer to Trump's lies, as "lies."
8. Trump aligned himself with Assange/Wikileaks, repeatedly - despite at one point, saying the media was making this up. Trump ally Sean Hannity interviewed Assange for his show.
9. Trump repeatedly dismissed US Intelligence agencies' findings on Russian hacking, and referred to them in quotes: "Intelligence."
10. Trump announced his will appoint Pam Bondi, the former Florida AG who received an illegal payment of $25mm from Trump Foundation in exchange for not investigating Trump University, to a top White House spot.
11. Senator McCain held a publicly televised Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Russian hacking of our election. For the first time, Americans got to hear from intelligence leadership.
12. Sen McCain and Graham said they had given up on efforts to push Leader McConnell for a special panel on Russia interference.
13. Trump lashed out in tweets at General Motor and Toyota, causing both stocks to plummet. In both cases, allegations were false.
14. Trump falsely took credit for jobs at a Ford plant. Ford CEO publicly stated the rationale for choosing the US over Mexico was not related to Trump.
15. WAPO announced the launch of a weekly column on what Trump got wrong on Twitter each week.
16. House GOP took a secret vote to take power over the independent Office of Congressional Ethics. After public outcry and calls to representatives by voters, the plan was scuttled. Trump had tweeted he was for the change, but against the timing.
17. Trump started referring to Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer as a "clown."
18. House GOP revived an obscure 1876 rule that allows them cut the pay of federal workers to $1.
19. Trump said he would ask the American taxpayers to pay for his infamous Wall on the Mexican border.
20. Trump promised to downsize intelligence agencies, including the CIA and Office of DNI, saying both were politicized.
21. Ex CIA-director James Woolsey resigned from Trump's transition team, saying he did not want to “fly under false colors” any longer.
22. Breaking decades of precedent, Trump said he would recall all Obama overseas envoys immediately on Jan 20th, before their replacements have been appointed.
23. Trump tweeted his apparent displeasure with the rating of "Celebrity Apprentice" under Arnold Schwarzenegger, saying he got "swamped" compared to when Trump hosted the show.
24. Report cited that 50 Trump electors were allegedly illegally seated. Rep Maxine Waters and other Democratic representatives, stood to protest, but couldn't find a single Senator to join them.
25. After meeting with the heads of the DNI, CIA and FBI, Trump continued to deny the Russian hacking, and instead pressed for a congressional investigation of leaks to NBC (something congress doesn't investigate). Trump said there was no impact on the election.
26. Later that day, an Intelligence report was made public detailing Putin's desire to hurt Clinton and help Trump, and the many ways Russia interfered. The report did not assess if there was an impact on the election (another Trump lie).
27. Trump blamed the DNC and Democrats for being hacked. The Intelligence report also indicates Republicans were hacked, although that info was not leaked.
28. Trump continued to side with Wikileaks and Russian, and against Intelligence. Even after learning Russia had hacked our election, he called intelligence a "political witch hunt," and next day tweeted only "stupid" people or fools would think having a good relationship with Russia was a bad thing.

Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda

Donald Trump is the biggest popular vote loser in history to ever to call himself President-Elect. In spite of the fact that he has no mandate, he will attempt to use his congressional majority to reshape America in his own racist, authoritarian, and corrupt image. If progressives are going to stop this, we must stand indivisibly opposed to Trump and the members of Congress who would do his bidding. Together, we have the power to resist - and we have the power to win.

We know this because we’ve seen it before. The authors of this guide are former congressional staffers who witnessed the rise of the Tea Party. We saw these activists take on a popular president with a mandate for change and a supermajority in Congress. We saw them organize locally and convince their own members of Congress to reject President Obama’s agenda. Their ideas were wrong, cruel, and tinged with racism - and they won.

We believe that protecting our values and neighbors will require mounting a similar resistance to the Trump agenda -- but a resistance built on the values of inclusion, tolerance, and fairness. Trump is not popular. He does not have a mandate. He does not have large congressional margins. If a small minority in the Tea Party can stop President Barack Obama, then we the majority can stop a petty tyrant named Trump.___Stand together. Take Steps, even small ones. Each step helps.

Raising Bandwidth.
Anyone with extra storage they are willing to assign to backup archives and make them available to those who need it?
Anyone know of data that needs saving?

Saving climate data

The Department of Energy has rejected Trump's demand that it list all employees working on climate change.  But this will change on January 20th.  All signs point to the worst:

The heads of Donald Trump’s transition teams for NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of the Interior and the Department of Energy, as well as his nominees to lead the EPA and the Department of the Interior, all question the science of human-caused climate change.

So, scientists are now backing up large amounts of climate data, just in case the Trump administration tries to delete it.

Of course saving the data publicly available on US government sites is not nearly as good as keeping climate programs fully funded!  New data is coming in all the time from satellites and other sources.  We need it - and we need the experts who understand it.

Also, it's possible that Trump won't be insane enough to delete big climate science databases.  But as my mother said: better safe than sorry!

“What are the most important .gov climate assets?” Eric Holthaus, a meteorologist and self-proclaimed “climate hawk,” tweeted from his Arizona home Saturday evening. “Scientists: Do you have a US .gov climate database that you don’t want to see disappear?”

Within hours, responses flooded in from around the country. Scientists added links to dozens of government databases to a Google spreadsheet. Investors offered to help fund efforts to copy and safeguard key climate data. Lawyers offered pro bono legal help. Database experts offered to help organize mountains of data and to house it with free server space. In California, Santos began building an online repository to “make sure these data sets remain freely and broadly accessible.”

The efforts include a “guerrilla archiving” event in Toronto, where experts will copy irreplaceable public data, meetings at the University of Pennsylvania focused on how to download as much federal data as possible in the coming weeks, and a collaboration of scientists and database experts who are compiling an online site to harbor scientific information.

“Something that seemed a little paranoid to me before all of a sudden seems potentially realistic, or at least something you’d want to hedge against,” said Nick Santos, an environmental researcher at the University of California at Davis, who over the weekend began copying government climate data onto a nongovernment server, where it will remain available to the public. “Doing this can only be a good thing. Hopefully they leave everything in place. But if not, we’re planning for that.”

At the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, where more than 20,000 earth and climate scientists gather from around the world, there is a public demonstration today at 1:30:

https://www.facebook.com/events/310950549304143

And the "guerilla archiving" hackathon in Toronto is this Saturday.  If you know people with good computer skills there, get them to check it out!   Here are details:

Location: Bissell Building, 4th Floor, 140 St. George St. University of Toronto

RSVP and up-to-date information: https://www.facebook.com/events/1828129627464671/

Bring: laptops, power bars, and snacks.  Coffee and pizza provided.

This event collaborates with the Internet Archive’s End of Term 2016 project, which seeks to archive the federal online pages and data that are in danger of disappearing during the Trump administration. Our event is focused on preserving information and data from the Environmental Protection Agency, which has programs and data at high risk of being removed from online public access or even deleted. This includes climate change, water, air, toxics programs. This project is urgent because the Trump transition team has identified the EPA and other environmental programs as priorities for the chopping block.

The Internet Archive is a San Francisco-based nonprofit digital library which aims at preserving and making universally accessible knowledge. Its End of Term web archive captures and saves U.S. Government websites that are at risk of changing or disappearing altogether during government transitions. The Internet Archive has asked volunteers to help select and organize information that will be preserved before the Trump transition.

New York Times article: “Harvesting Government History, One Web Page at a Time” http://nyti.ms/2gDz5Kj

Activities:

Identifying endangered programs and data
Seeding the End of Term webcrawler with priority URLs
Identifying and mapping the location of inaccessible environmental databases
Hacking scripts to make accessible to the webcrawler hard to reach databases.
Building a toolkit so that other groups can hold similar events
Skills needed: We need all kinds of  people — and that means you!
People who can locate relevant webpages for the Internet Archive’s webcrawler
People who can identify data targeted for deletion by the Trump transition team and the organizations they work with
People with knowledge of government websites and information, including the EPA
People with library and archive skills
People who are good at navigating databases
People interested in mapping where inaccessible data is located at the EPA
Hackers to figure out how to extract data and URLs from databases (in a way that Internet Archive can use)
People with good organization and communication skills
People interested in creating a toolkit for reproducing similar events

The first quote in my article is from here - this is full of detailed info:

Oliver Milman, Trump's transition: sceptics guide every agency dealing with climate change, The Guardian, 12 December 2017, https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/dec/12/donald-trump-environment-climate-change-skeptics

The second is from here:

Brady Dennis, Scientists are frantically copying U.S. climate data, fearing it might vanish under Trump, Washington Post, 13 December 2017, https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/12/13/scientists-are-frantically-copying-u-s-climate-data-fearing-it-might-vanish-under-trump/

I hope the small "guerilla archiving" efforts will be dwarfed by more systematic work, because it's crucial that databases be copied along with all relevant metadata - and some sort of cryptographic certificate of authenticity, if possible.  However, getting lots of people involved is bound to be a good thing, politically speaking.

If you have good computer skills, good understanding of databases, or lots of storage space, please get involved.   Efforts are being coordinated here:

http://www.ppehlab.org/datarefuge

PPEHLab and Penn Libraries are organizing a #DataRescue event at the University of Pennsylvania 13-14 January 2017.

Also read Eric Holthaus's tweets and replies here:

https://twitter.com/EricHolthaus/with_replies___Raising Bandwidth.
Anyone with extra storage they are willing to assign to backup archives and make them available to those who need it?
Anyone know of data that needs saving?

Delete Apathy:

So that empathy is the rule......

Following from https://whitneyhess.com/blog/2012/08/21/on-empathy-and-apathy-two-case-studies/

The suffix -pathy means “feeling” or “suffering”
The prefix em- means “within” or “inside”
The prefix a- means “not” or “without”

By definition, empathy is the opposite of apathy.

Empathy is defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another” —_within + feeling or inside + suffering_.

Apathy is defined as “a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern” —_ not + feeling or without + suffering_.

I believe empathy and apathy exist on a spectrum. The degree to which one feels the feelings of another determines whether one’s dot is plotted closer to the empathy or apathy extreme.

FUN!
Oh, wouldn't that be awesome? Anyone know anyone that could organize this? That would be delighted to?

Raising bandwidth to see if it takes on momentum.

An intriguing idea I saw posted elsewhere on the Interwebs:

"You know what would be really smart? If there was a televised "freedom concert" with huge celebrities like: Beyoncé and Jay Z, Madonna, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, Gaga, etc. that aired at the same time as the inauguration. Imagine how mad "Tiny Fingers" would be. He would totally lose all the ratings. And what if all the proceeds of the concert went to: the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Lambda Legal, NAACP, CAIR, IRAP, SPLC, Environmental Defense Fund, etc." I would add that Alec Baldwin should MC the event playing Trump as he does on SNL."___FUN!

Quote: "They" is us.
And "we" can do alot, even if each does just a little- that adds up to alot!

Update from The Resistance, via +John Baez:

Starting a few days ago, many scientists, librarians, archivists, computer geeks and environmental activists have started to make backups of US government environmental data. We’re trying to beat the January 20th deadline just in case these backups are required.

[...]

However, the people organizing the project are currently overwhelmed with offers of help! People worldwide are proceeding to take action in a decentralzed way! So, everything is quite chaotic and nobody has an overall view of what’s going on.

I can’t overstate this: if you think that ‘they’ have a plan and ‘they’ know what’s going on, you’re wrong. ‘They’ is us. Act accordingly.

It turns out that community organising is an important skill, after all.

Small steps, many hands, getting used to "doing" and doing a bit more..... that makes big changes.

I think at this point, we need to stand together, or we fall alone.

Sooooo.... remember when there was a bit if concern if D.T didn't win? That armed followers would get a tetch out of hand? Oh, and many of them have guns?

Well, what is going to happen if these devout followers get just a little pissed at what is going down in the new government. When the hopes and wishes and expectations are not only not filled... but downright, uh, spit on? These armed followers?

The department of Energy said "No". (To supplying names of employees and contractors who had attended or work on climate issues).
It works.
