Hiking with the Boys
I don't usually post family shots, in fact I think this is my first one to post on G+.  Here's a shot of me with my sons during our camping/hiking trip this past weekened.  This was taken from the Glen Falls trail in North Carolina near the NC/Georgia border.

Rhododendron & Trees In the Clouds
We went camping in Black Rock Mountain State Park, Georgia this weekend.  The park sits at an altitude of 3,640 feet which meant on this weekend it was socked in the clouds all day Saturday.  I really wanted to get some shots of the Rhododendron that were blooming, so I decided to get some with the trees in the fog.  I like how this turned out.

New Territory
I have been away from G+ the past few days because the boys and I went camping this weekend.  We made base camp one of our favorite parks in Georgia, Black Rock Mountain State Park.  After unloading, we decided to take a drive and go explore some new areas just across the border in North Carolina.  We were waterfall hunting and it was a success.  One of our stops was Glen Falls trail which is a 1 mile hike with several falls.  This was a really nice overlook at the top of one of the falls with a great view of the mountains in the distance.

I love that the airlines are making more entertaining safety videos instead of the monotone boring ones that we used to have.  Last year +Delta did a great job debuting several different variations for their new safety video.  Air New Zealand now has one featuring +Bear Grylls.  Thanks +Markham Lane for letting me know about this one.

New Strap
I picked up a new Tamrac camera strap to replace the uncomfortable hot kit one.  I think I'm going to like it.  Did you replace your kit camera strap?  If so, what do you use and like about it?  

BTW, +Amazon.com, thanks for my quick Prime delivery, but did you run out of small boxes or something?  That's the only reason I can figure out as to why you would ship two tiny items in a box that is 50 times larger than necessary.

If you are looking for some cloud storage, I just signed up for Copy so I can use this to share some of my mass photo projects (football games) with groups easier.  I was having to rotate files constantly with Dropbox, so the extra space is nice.

While there are some kinks in the new G+ update, there are many things that I like about it.  It is a bit more painful to upload and share a photo, but on the flip side, for someone that almost always posts to multiple hashtags ( without trying to overdo it) and those are usually from pasting them into the editor, I REALLY like that G+ now resolves the hashtag as a link from text rather than forcing you to type it after you type the hash to get it to resolve to a link.

 +Brian Matiash I'm sure you could use some positive comments as I see a lot of negative ones.  Kudos to the team for making this aspect much easier.

Distant Thunderstorms
You really get a sense of how huge thunderstorms can be when you are flying above or at the same level as them and can see them from many miles away.  You can see just a bit of Sedonda, #Arizona in between the two clouds in the bottom right corner.

Spring Time in the Rockies
This was taken May 2nd after the big storm passed through.  You can tell it's runoff seasons since Paonia Reservoir is full and muddy.  The mountains in the center are Chair Mountain and Ragged Mountain.  In the back center is Mount Sopris.  In the back right is Capitol Peak and Snowmass Mountain.

Frozen Crop Circles
Last month I posted a shot of crop circles from over West Texas.  Last week I few home the day after the big snow storm.  There was snow everywhere.  Here's a similar shot to what I posted last month, but this time everything is covered with snow.  I'm pretty sure this was near the SE corner of Colorado where the Oklahoma & Texas panhandle are.

Window with A View
This is what I would call a window with a view!  When I'm taking shots from a plane, I usually try to avoid the plane parts and the window, but for some reason I decided to include them on some of my recent trips.  This is the inside the plane perspective of the shot I posted a few days ago of the Great Sand Dunes National Park in #colorado .  I thought this turned out to be a great way to give you a better sense of what it was like to be sitting in the seat.

Fresh Snow on Mount Sopris
I love flying over Colorado, but this was a special treat.  On this trip we flew just south of the area where I spent a lot of time when I was a kid.  My favorite mountain in Colorado is Mount Sopris just outside of Carbondale.  I noticed we were flying just south of Grand Junction.  This was from the landscape that I recognized (I was on a 757 that had now video showing where you were).  I had a great view of the cliffs and the city and was just barely able to see Grand Mesa.  This got me really excited as I knew we were heading right towards Carbondale.  I had been on a flight several years ago where we went north of Carbondale, so I wasn't sure if we were going to be north of the valley or south of it.  I was really hoping for south since I was on the left side of the plane and north meant I would miss it.  A few minutes later I was glad to see that wewere head... more »

Orange Haze
It was a bit hazy in making for some nice colors in South San Francisco before heading home.  If you look closely you can faintly make out the mountain silhouettes in the background.

Good Morning San Francisco
When I flew home earlier this week we left SFO just at the sun was rising.  I happened to be on the correct side of the plane to get a great view of downtown San Francisco, the Oakland Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge.

End of the Day

Aerial Photography - Spring Green
Usually the hills that you fly over on approach to SFO airport are brown.  This time of the year they are covered with new spring growth, so they look completely different (and much better in my opinion).

Don't Leave your Camera at Home
On my way to SFO this evening, we flew right over the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.  It was clear until just before we hit the foothills of Colorado and then it was very cloudy with thin clouds making for not good photos.  I was very disappointed.  All of the sudden the clouds had a break and this was my view.  Wow, what a view it was.  

I was heading to the office for only a couple of days for this trip and I have evening plans both evenings, so I considered not even bringing my camera at all.  Boy am I glad I didn't do that.  I would be kicking myself big time if I had.  I did pack light though, just the body lens that was attached to it.  No filters, no tripod, no other lenses, no cleaning supplies, no extra SD cards, no charger.  It was kind of nice not lugging all of that extra gear with me.

Post Sunset Colors
There wasn't much of a sunset when I was shooting in Newport Beach, California, but there turned out to be some interesting blue colors in the sky after the sunset.  I took this shot from the end of the pier at Newport Beach.  If you look closely you can see the power plant along the coast at Huntington Beach.

Here is another full rez upload.  This image is 17632x8789 pixels wide

Top of independence Pass near Aspen Colorado.  The light on the clouds is coming from the moon that just set behind the mountains off in the distance.  This image is made up of 3 rows vertical images stitched together (26 photos total). and was taken around 3AM, long after the sun set and a long time before the sunrise.

Next week i will randomly pick one person that shares this image and they will get a free print of the photo.

Capital Clouds
This was one of my Texture images for +Christina Lawrie's +Photography+ Project for this month.  This was a first for me doing a texture blend like this.  On my way home from DC there were some interesting clouds that made a nice pattern, so I used those clouds as the texture for this image.  Thanks +Christina Lawrie for challenging us to do something new and learn something out of our comfort zone.

Decades of New Leaves
The cherry blossoms in Washington DC were quite a sight to see.  Even though I missed peak by a few days, there were still lots of great trees to see that were covered with blossomes.  The new leaves and flowers shoot out from all over the trees.  This new leave growth was from a very large trunk from a 100 year old tree around the tidal basin.
Best viewed large.

Cherry Trees in DC

No Respect
These kids were climbing on this tree to pose for photos because of parents encouraging them to climb on it despite this sign on BOTH sides of the tree.  Come on parents, lead by example!

DC Bound
#flattyler  is ready for our trip to DC first thing in the morning.  He's even getting into the colonial spirit by dressing for the occasion.  There are still some cherry blossoms left according to some DC G+ers, so I'm super excited about being in DC while they are blooming since I have never done that before.

West Texas Farms

Aliens Among Us
This really freaked me out!!!  I was going through my shots from last week and was about to post an nice airplane shot for #farmfriday  when I noticed this. I will admit that I was kind of skeptical about all of these #alienabductionfriday  posts that I see from time to time, but I'm no longer a skeptic.  When we were doing the Newport Beach photowalk last week with #flattyler , I was happily shooting the sunset behind the pier. I was actually quite happy that nobody was walking around on the top of the pier.  Little did I know that was not actually the case. Although I couldn't see them with my naked eye, my camera picked up their silhouette outlines.  I guess the sensor on my DSLR is sensitive enough to detect the light warping around them.  Has anyone else seen this before?  I'm a bit freaked out now that they are walking all around us and we justcan'... more »
