"When you pull the string on the Mark Hunt action figure it just stares you down until you apologize and leave the room."

So many implications to think of here, not the least of which: privacy.

"We were here to protest communism and to stand up for the blue collar working class. And then I got urine thrown on me," said Matthew Heimbach, president of the White Student Union. "So it shows really how tolerant these people are."
Wait what? the White Student Union is actually a thing?
I especially love this:
"So it shows really how tolerant these people are."
Oh, I am familiar with your type of tolerance. Only too fucking familiar.
Hold on while I go fill up a bottle of piss.
I remember when another group convinced the youth they were for the working class. The good ol BNP.
Fucking neo-nazis. The lot of them.

This is the best piece about privacy that I've read in a long time! If it doesn't change how you think about the privacy issue, I'll be surprised. It opens:
"Many governments (including our own, here in the US) would have its citizens believe that privacy is a switch (that is, you either reasonably expect it, or you don’t). This has been demonstrated in many legal tests, and abused in many circumstances ranging from spying on electronic mail, to drones in our airspace monitoring the movements of private citizens. But privacy doesn’t work like a switch – at least it shouldn’t for a country that recognizes that privacy is an inherent right. In fact, privacy, like other components to security, works in layers..."

Just listened to an interview with Jeremy Scahill about his book and documentary and it was enthralling to say the least.

Not only does this video by YouTuber "Crypski" showcase the beauty afforded by the ForgeLight engine in +PlanetSide 2, it's also a stirring reminder of the epic gameplay and locales that keep players fighting for Auraxis. We'd love to see more great videos from you guys; be sure to share them in the comments!

How many years left until understanding encryption will become an essential safety measure for all, and secure communication a fundamental human right?

This is important: a new video by Larry Lessig about how money corrupts U.S. politics, and what we need to do to reclaim our democracy. Lessig also has a short (25K words for $3) book that goes with the talk. Today, +David Archer and +STEM Women on G+ shared some things about Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, the first person to earn a Ph.D. from Radcliffe College, and later the chair of Harvard's department of Astronomy. However, her work is largely unknown today – and having just spent an hour reading through some of it, this is something which needs to be fixed.
Her most critical work was actually her Ph.D. thesis in 1925, in which she calculated the chemical composition of the stars. (http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu//full/1925PhDT.........1P/0000001.000.html – thanks to +Rajini Rao for finding the link. Be warned, it's long!) The use of spectroscopy to determine which elements are present in the stars had started in the 1860's (and had led to the discovery of Helium), but figuring out how much of those elements is present was much more complicated. The idea is simple: each element (and e... more »

Wrestling dropped from Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee's executive board has dropped wrestling from the Olympics. There's a chance that wrestling may be added back in, but it's not looking good.
Wrestling was one of the founding sports of the ancient Greek Olympic games, and has been one of the foundational sports of the modern Olympics.
Meanwhile, badminton, ping pong, dressage and curling will be retained.
Reasons for the removal include TV ratings and ticket sales. In other words, the ancient and Olympic sport of wrestling has been dropped from the Olympics because McDonald's, Dow, Coca-Cola and other companies aren't making enough money from advertising during wrestling matches.
Here's an idea: Why doesn't the board instead drop the word "Olympics" from the sporting event? Because if the... more »
