I have always liked Scientific illustration, particularly from the era before computer graphics. In my opinion the golden age of illustration was the early 60's during the space race, when many books were published with "artists impressions" of what future technology might look like. The same style of illustration is found in old science text books.

Just recently my Dad gave me an almost complete set of magazines titled "Understanding Science" with the bye-line  "A new colour magazine which becomes an encyclopaedia". He subscribed to it in the early sixties (it was published in 1962 in Great Britain.) It is full of the kind of illustration I'm talking about so I have a great resource to look through and enjoy.

The illustrations below are not copies of illustrations in the magazine (Except for the flame). However, I tired to copy the style. Iwo... more »

G'day, I'm Andrew Keith, also from Australia in central New South Wales. I live in a small town approximately 500km from the coast.

I am a relatively new artist and I like to experiment with a lot of different subject matter and styles. I work mainly with colour pencils and watercolour.

I've just started an art journal, thanks to Julie's encouragement. I intend to use it for developing art ideas and doing experimental work. I do not do a lot of writing, but I will make notes for my own amusement or future reference.

I have a life long interest in art but have only become active as an artist since I joined G+ about a year ago. I enjoy working with pencil, chalk and acrylic paints. I am quite experimental as I am only just finding my feet as an artist.

My work is usually based on experiments with colour and geometry, and i find natural geometry particularly interesting (eg plant spirals).

Pandanus seed geometry

While attempting to sketch a pandanus seed I noticed that bumps on it's surface looked similar to a Voronoi diagram. I decided to try an experiment to see how closely an actual Voronoi diagram based on the points of each bump would line up with the real boundaries between the bumps.

It turns out that the diagram fit remarkably well, as shown in the photos in this album. Now I'm wondering how else I can use this technique to create interesting geometric artwork.

Phyllotaxis City
Sharpie on A4 paper.

Phyllotaxis is the tendency for plant structures to form spirals, such as seeds on a sunflower. I've always been fascinated with these natural patterns and thought it would be interesting to incorporate them into my artwork.

The rough sketch below is a city who's road map is a phyllotactic spiral. You can just see the layout showing through the paper (i drew the layout on the underside)

I think it has potential and will be refining this over time.

"Walden" - a painting by Julie Hutchinson

So happy to receive this beautiful painting in a three way swap with +Julie Hutchinson and +Patsy Priebe. The inspiration for the artworks is the poem Walden by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Wonderful work Julie, you have captured the peaceful beauty of the garden and it is a real pleasure to have it in my collection.

Earpiece
Colour pencil and fine marker on 2.5" by 3.5" Water colour paper (Art Card/ACEO).
In a bid to improve my life drawing I've been studying anatomy. I find the structures in our bodies fascinating, even though they may have no bearing on our outward appearance.

This is only a crude approximation of the inner ear, drawn more for my own asthetic appeal than for accuracy. However, by drawing it I gained a better understanding of how our ears work than i had previously.. It really is a bit like a  Rube Goldberg machine.

Strange life

Colour pencil on paper, 4" by 6"

I wanted to test out some new pencils and decided to draw without any plan or regard to composition. The primary goal was to determine the range of affects I could achieve through blending and overlaying colours. I prefer to draw very dense colours with minimal paper showing through so my drawings tend to be quite saturated. The main problem I found was the white pencil did not work well over the darker colours,  so I was unable to achieve the highlights that I would have liked to add... a lesson for next time.
