Be very afraid, Republicans. Hillary Clinton is making many behind the scenes moves to get ready for a run for the Presidency and has powerful friends, much as the Obama political organization did. She will have extremely strong support, and will be formidable. Lose some sleep, Repubs!

USA, UK, any country really. Greedy selfish bastards who truly only care about their own comfort determine the comfort of 80% of the nation... but still 60% are thick enough to believe all the political double-talk and continue to vote for right wing politicians who f*** them over.
I reckon even monkeys would be able to tell the difference between other monkeys that are screwing them and those that care about the best interests of the whole tribe. Shame humans aren't as clever as dumb animals.

New Paper Showing Glacier Loss, Sea Level Rise
A new paper by Gardner et al. in Science uses satellite data from +NASA to quantify changes in glaciers over the past decade. The paper reports that glaciers outside of the large Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have lost as much combined mass as the large ice sheets, and have contributed approximately 30% of the observed sea level rise. The authors also found that all regions lost glacier mass during the 2003-2009 period. These are important results because they quantify the contribution of the many smaller glaciers around the world to global sea level rise.
The peer-reviewed paper is here:

EROEI is "Energy returned on energy invested"
EROEI equals "usable energy acquired divided by energy expended (to recover the energy)".
The scheme to burn the Canadian oil sands, which have a terrible EROEI, seems like a James Bond villain's plot to destroy the world, the silly stuff of Hollywood screenwriter desperation to meet a deadline and insufficient fact checking with science-savvy friends.
Amazingly, exploiting and burning the oil sands is the plan of the Canadian and US governments, following a Bilderberg blueprint and milestone for the creation of a North American Union via integration of US energy infrastructure.
Just one of many incredibly dangerous aspects of the oil sands project is that it will pollute so much fresh water that to carry out the full plan for both fracking and oil sands development decrease the supply of fresh... more »

"The next wave of union protesters isn't blue collar.
It's lawyers, paralegals, secretaries, helicopter pilots, judges, insurance agents and podiatrists.
These white-collar workers are not exactly the picture of the labor movement, but they are becoming a more essential part of it as they turn to unions for help in a tough economy as bosses try to squeeze out more profits.
'Employers have been downsizing, asking employees to take on larger roles, making them work more hours,' said Nicole Korkolis, spokeswoman for the Office and Professional Employees International Union. 'People are feeling like they need an advocate.'
Members of UAW Local 2320 in New York, nearly half of whom are lawyers, voted to strike Wednesday, after their employer, Legal Services NYC, pushed for cuts to benefits in a recent contract negotiation.

If we make consistent effort, based on proper education, we can change the world. We are selfish, that’s natural, but we need to be wisely selfish, not foolishly selfish. We have to concern ourselves more with others’ well-being, that’s the way to be wisely selfish. We have the ability to take the long-term benefit into account. I think it is possible to make real change in this century.

The New and Improved[?] Google+
Did any of the devs stop to consider that many of us are on Google+ because it DOESN'T look like Pintrest or Facebook or ...
It was easy to read, easy to use. Now it's harder to read and my mouse doesn't seem to move smoothly. The platform has become more cumbersome to use.
+Vic Gundotra are you getting this? Yes. I'm sure that a certain amount of the ruffled feathers may just be due to the irritation caused by the fact that someone moved our cheese but I'm seeing an awful lot of negative first impressions.
Maybe Google is just trying to be like everyone else in that their offerings seem geared for tablets and smartphone but most of us still have PC and Macs and we're not likely to give those up in the foreseeable future unless the manufacturers just flat out decide to stop making them.

Scientists are warning the planet has now reached a grim climate milestone not seen for two or three million years. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the amount of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has topped 400 parts per million. The 400 ppm threshold has been an important marker in U.N. climate change negotiations, widely recognized as a dangerous level that could drastically worsen human-caused global warming. We speak to leading climate scientist Michael Mann, who warns: "We have to go several million years back in time to find a point in Earth’s history where CO2 was as high as it is now. ... If we continue to burn fossil fuels at accelerating rates, if we continue with business as usual we will cross the 450 parts per million limit in a matter of maybe a couple of decades. With that amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, we commit to what could truly be described a... more »

Banned TED Talk: Nick Hanauer "Rich people don't create jobs"
Via Business Insider: "As the war over income inequality wages on, super-rich Seattle entrepreneur Nick Hanauer has been raising the hackles of his fellow 1-percenters, espousing the contrarian argument that rich people don't actually create jobs. The position is controversial — so much so that TED is refusing to post a talk that Hanauer gave on the subject. National Journal reports today that TED officials decided not to put Hanauer's March 1 speech up online after deeming his remarks "too politically controversial" for the site...".

This was a pretty amazing lecture and panel discussion, If you search YouTube for "beyond belief session" (include the quotation marks) you'll find a whole series. I found it particularly interesting that some of the greatest scientific minds in human history have suggested the existence of #intelligentdesign but not for the reasons you might think.
Disclaimer: I do not subscribe to the "theory" of Intelligent Design nor do I believe that it has ANY place in a science class!

"Let’s face it, they don’t want to create an economy where there are jobs for every qualified applicant. For the people they actually represent, the current situation is ideal. They’re paying low taxes, getting government handouts and forcing their employees to work harder for less. They have absolutely zero incentive to create American jobs unless demand for a product or service becomes so high they have no other choice than to hire more people.
They also have an interest in keeping unemployment at a level that forces people to take jobs they may not want, and for less pay than they would get in a job market like we had before the recession in 2007.
When you look at it, every proposal from the current do-nothing Congress (and the one before it) has done nothing to put people back to work, instead focusing on fattening the pockets of their corporate sponsors and masters.
On top of that,... more »

From an Anonymous White Woman to South Carolina: ‘Kiss My Motherfucking Ass’
Dear Fellow South Carolinians of the First District,
What the fuck are you people thinking? Mark Sanford, really? Way to keep us in the running, as the shitass craziest state of the nation. One more fuck-up like this and we’ll surpass even Florida — home of child killers, cannibals and roach eaters! The “Palmetto State”, my ass. I think the “Facepalm State” is becoming increasingly more accurate here.
I have to hand it to you though–go big or go home, right? On the same ballot where you elected Mark Sanford, that two-timing turd, you also voted–by a majority of 65%, no less–to protect the sanctity of marriage from scary gay people. Why shart quietly when you can shit the whole bed, am I right? The irony is intoxicating and it makes me puke.
We all know that South Carolina is ... more »

HUMANS FEEL EMPATHY FOR ROBOTS: fMRI SCANS SHOW SIMILAR BRAIN FUNCTION WHEN ROBOTS ARE TREATED THE SAME WAY AS HUMANS
"Robots now infiltrate our lives, toys like Furbies or robot vacuum cleaners bring us closer, but how do we really feel about these non-sentient objects on a human level? A recent study by researchers at the University of Duisburg Essen in Germany found that humans have similar brain function when shown images of affection and violence being inflicted on robots and humans".
"One goal of current robotics research is to develop robotic companions that establish a long-term relationship with a human user, because robot companions can be useful and beneficial tools. They could assist elderly people in daily tasks and enable them to live longer autonomously in their homes, help disabled people in their environments, or... more »

An unusual take on climate change ...
and yeah; someone did take a poll...
Published on May 5, 2013
"The United States has failed to take action to mitigate
climate change thanks in part to the large number of religious
Americans who believe the world has a set expiration date.
Research by David C. Barker of the University of Pittsburgh
and David H. Bearce of the University of Colorado uncovered that
belief in the biblical end-times was a motivating factor behind resistance
to curbing climate change."*
A recent study has found that a belief in a biblical end of days
is what's holding many of the religious back on wanting
to stop climate change-- if you thought natural resources
were a gift and that someone would just return to earth
and fix our problems, would you? Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz,
