Interesting interview with A C Grayling. Particularly interesting are his remarks about the substantial difference between the need to publish in science and the very different requirement for publication in the humanities. The second interesting thing are his remarks about the virtues of MOOCs and the very different needs of personal/small-scale conversations. http://goo.gl/87DzKy

+Laura Gibbs , you may be interested in this - and did you know that there's been an excellent murder mystery serial on PBS called The Bletchley circle (and that there's a second series under preparation).
The drama series has some superb editing shifting from the mundane to deep code.

Reminded of one of our delightful school poems: Silver Slowly, silently, now the moon Walks the night in her silver shoon; This way, and that, she peers, and sees Silver fruit upon silver trees; One by one the casements catch Her beams beneath the silvery thatch; Couched in his kennel, like a log, With paws of silver sleeps the dog; From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep Of doves in a silver-feathered sleep; A harvest mouse goes scampering by, With silver claws and a silver eye; And moveless fish in the water gleam, By silver reeds in a silver stream. Unfortunately, Education Review, that's not a shock finding. ATAR's have to do with demand and capacity. If there's huge capacity and little demand, ATAR's are low, to encourage anybody. If there's little capacity and high demand, ATAR's are high. The numbers are not related to difficulty or what standard candidates 'should' be. http://goo.gl/jJXKf

Correlation versus Causation

Redditor Jasonp55 has a neat demonstration of the perils of confusing correlation with causation, and his well-chosen example makes this a potentially useful chart for discussing this issue with friends who won't vaccinate themselves and their kids.

COURSE EVALS We got our course evals back late last night apparently for the Fall semester - I'd be curious to hear from others what that experience is like. A great thing about our online evals is that we don't have to wait weeks and weeks for the data to come in (as we used to with the paper ones). Instead, we get the results as soon as the final grades have been processed. Nothing really unusual for me this time - encouraging feedback, lots of happy students, high satisfaction, all of which I feel is important for me teaching online. Sad to say, the students' evaluation of the course is literally the only kind of evaluation that happens - so, deeply flawed as that evaluation is (eegad, I could go on for pages and pages about how flawed it is), it is the only evaluation of record. Given that online courses are badly disparaged by the other faculty, having detailed student comments and... more »

OK. I'm now a part of a couple of communities. I get email notifications of posts, plus the cute little red number on my profile info. Beaut. Now, how I get to read stuff. I go to the community, and the page is like, empty. Blank. Old Mac. Old OS X. Old User. Old Chrome. Is any of these significant, or am I just a testament to being older. (Perhaps the key to use in in that beautiful, understated, near-invisible grey that's so beloved of modern web pages?!!)
It's probably a really simple solution. Anyone in the know, I'm ready to be edified!

Just wondering, science and maths heavies - in all the string theory/multiverse hubbub, has anyone wrestled with the possible interactions of other "verses" with this one?
Speaking as an ignoramus. (In the rarefied realms of strings and multiverses) it seems to be taken as axiomatic that there is total independence, but must that be valid? Is there something like a hyperspace that the "verses" inhabit/construct/respond to, and which therefore can 'leak' some information across them?

Those who have been following me know that I have been busy promoting our solar-powered LED light, used to replace toxic and expensive kerosene lights in developing countries.

We have a new supply ready to ship in Australia, so get yours now if you live or have friends/family Down Under (due to postal regulations we cannot ship them outside Australia).

They are not just perfect for the poor, but also for the outdoors and for photographers! I know that several photographers here on G+ have already used them for light painting :)

So get yours now, or buy some for your Ozzie friends and family. If you don't have any Ozzie friends: please share this with somebody who does and then book yourself a trip Down Under!

Just been exercising my computer with proper factor sums - originally looking for perfect numbers (numbers which equal their proper factor sums), then seguéing into untouchable numbers (Numbers which cannot be generated from the proper factor sum of any other number). While doing this I notice that there are around 1/2 as many unique odd sums as even, although the total number of odd sums exceeds even sums.

Any thoughts on
1. why there are fewer unique odd sums?
2. How far past an untouchable number candidate needs computing before being sure the candidate is indeed untouchable?

So, Jonah Lehrer's made up quotes from Bob Dylan. Stupid. Impairs his reliability. True. Now, assuming the "Dylan quotes" are illustrative, rather than information content, is there any other fraud in the book? Fake scientific papers and/or academic fraud?
Is his stuff on brainstorming being ineffective also bilge? I don't know. Anyone else?
