About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse.  At the time I didn’t think much about it.  But my voice never fully recovered.  So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis.  This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly.  Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold.  It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.

While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord.  But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.

Stars go punk (or "punk") at the Met Gala 2013!

I'm digging Rooney Mara's, Minka Kelly's, and Katy Perry's looks - the latter being instantly-recognizable +Dolce & Gabbana (though neither is how I'd interpret punk at all)... SJP certainly gets points for her mohawk, and January Jones and Ginnifer Goodwin for their punk makeup. Oh, and Rosie Huntington-Whitely's gown is bad-ass!

On this day in history 39 years ago, the Portuguese military overthrew the federal government, and the Carnation Revolution swept through the streets of Lisbon, ending Europe's longest fascist dictatorship.

Hackers have compromised the main Twitter account of The Associated Press, sending out an erroneous tweet about an attack at the White House. The tweet, which said that there had been two explosions at the White House and President Barack Obama was injured, came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists. The AP said Tuesday that its Twitter account had been suspended following a hack and said it was working to correct the issue. The cyberattack is the latest in a string targeting international media organizations. The tweet put out by hackers briefly sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average sharply lower.

The first draft of journalism.  If journalism is the "first draft of history" we should think of social news coverage (G+,Twitter, Reddit) as the first draft of journalism. The social coverage was fast-paced, chaotic, raw, and interesting. It was too often not accurate -- wrong suspects, wrong names, not dead/dead, etc. I don't decry that except when innocent folk end up being wrongly referenced as criminals. It's a fascinating example of media evolution and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
