An example of reinforcement learning.

The video shows a Barrett WAM robot learning to flip pancakes by reinforcement learning. The motion is encoded in a mixture of basis force fields through an extension of Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) that represents the synergies across the different variables through stiffness matrices. An Inverse Dynamics controller with variable stiffness is used for reproduction.

For pancake day special, the skill is first demonstrated via kinesthetic teaching, and then refined by Policy learning by Weighting Exploration with the Returns (PoWER) algorithm. After 50 trials, the robot learns that the first part of the task requires a stiff behavior to throw the pancake in the air, while the second part requires the hand to be compliant in order to catch the pancake without having it bounced off the pan.

Procrastination is something that many of us struggle with every single day. We simply fail to find the motivation to undertake a task, project or activity because of a myriad of excuses, habits, thoughts and fears. Yet, procrastination can easily be overcome if we simply take time to understand the intricate dynamics of this common past-time.

This year Felix Baumgartner is preparing to freefall from a balloon at 37000 meters of altitude near the edge of space.

The intention is to break four world records: the freefall record of 31333 meters set by Joe Kittinger in 1960, the highest manned flight in a balloon currently at 36576 meters, the first person to hit supersonic speed in freefall and the longest freefall duration (around 5 minutes and 30 seconds). Sponsored by +Red Bull the event is to take place in Roswell in New Mexico

The exploit will require a pressure suit and various scientific data will be collected for the advancement of medical science. Possible applications include adaptations for high-altitude flight missions, devising a means to regain earth for stranded astronauts, new protective suits and special parachutes for speeds above 1120 kmh/h.

Google+ Passes 100 Million Users

I'm doing some analysis this morning on the growth rates of Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, Foursquare and Facebook.

The big news today is that Facebook may file its S-1. I'm monitoring sec.gov, but haven't seen anything surface yet. When it happens, it should show up with this link/query: http://1.usa.gov/AcHUXi

Meanwhile, I think it's noteworthy that Google+ membership has grown more than 10% since Jan. 19th when Larry Page announced 90 million users. I have them at 100.8 million users by the end of the day. They have been growing by more than 750,000 new users per day since the 19th, based on analysis of users with hundreds of different surnames. If that rate holds steady, Google+ will end the year with 345 million users. But as I have said before, Google has many dials and levers to use this year to increase signups... more »

This could open the way one day to prosthetics for people with impaired communication skills or allow direct neuro-control over devices.

You've most likely heard about the Stop Online Piracy Act by now. What you might not know is that copyright laws in their current state can apply to people outside of the United States.

Richard O'Dwyer, a 23-year old British citizen, is going to be extradited for having run a site linking to copyrighted material and could face 5 years imprisonment.

Although the position of copyright holders in wanting to curb online piracy is understandable, what is particularly worrying is that no criminal charges were pressed by UK authorities. Links, which form the basis of the Internet, are as of yet not considered as synonymous with copyright infringement in some legislations.

This news carries with it the eery precedent set by extraditions carried out with people suspected of terrorism. With that comes the important question of whether an individual will be guaranteed a... more »
