Portrait of an Endangered Species - Roan bull, Mokala National Park, South Africa

Only a few hundred of these spectacular antelope survive in southern Africa. The original population from which the Kruger National Park was re-stocked survives in the Waterberg of South Africa, conserved through the prescience of Clive Walker, one of the most influential conservationists of the subregion.

Roan are highly susceptible to attack by anthrax bacteria. They also prefer savannah with tall grasses, ideal cover for their main predators, lions.

Like Tossing a Salad - Immature Southern Ground Hornbill flicks a grasshopper, Kruger National Park, South Africa

The challenges at conserving this magnificent species include large-scale stripping of tall woodlands for firewood (these birds breed in large, hollow tree trunks), the destruction of the second egg laid by the first hatchling (a behaviour shared by many large raptor species) and the incredibly high protein requirements by the hatchling (essentially forcing a pattern of co-operative breeding on the young fledgelings).
