Easing back into training after injury rest?

I was up to doing 13-15 mi on my long runs, but have had to dial things back significantly for a couple weeks due to what I think is mild peroneal tendonitis.

Let's say I'm down to doing close to zero miles for two or three weeks, but doing plenty of cross-training in meantime (core-work, HIIT, etc.).

Once pain is down to zero, I plan on starting out slowly (2-4 mile runs), but ramping up fairly quickly assuming there are no issues.

Is this wise, or should I be more principled in increasing slowly back to my pre-injury level?

Another run today, this one was pretty brutal between the terrain and the heat. Not sure how I like the Black Mountain trail, as it's generally too steep to run up and results in pulp-knees on the way back down.

Fooled around with nutrition today:
- Upped carb intake from 115 kcal/hr -> 230 kcal/hr during run.
- Increased post-run recovery drink amount by 2x (60g carbs, 20g protein).

Felt a little better than last time during the mid/latter part of run despite the heat ... but crashed badly in the last mile. I read that water is key in aiding carb absorption though, and I ran out of it with a couple miles to go, so that probably didn't help.

At Wunderlich Park for my first real trail run since January's race. Felt pretty good today, here's to hoping it still feels good tomorrow :)

Some cool stats:

Funny how when I think of "something to protect face from dust", I immediately think of a bandana. Is this just me, or is it a general US cultural thing? In reality, a dust-mask makes much more sense ... maybe I just watched too many westerns as a kid?

I had my first Japanese class today in downtown San Jose. Interesting group of students, should be fun!

I learned one new thing today: You count things you send off/apply for (e.g. applications for contest drawings, donations, etc.) with 口. e.g., (抽選のこと)シール2枚1口で応募. Woulda guessed it would be 回 or 件 or really anything but 口 :P

Ran my first trail race today! 11mi course (or so they said) with 1800 feet of climb, both of which would also be new records for me.

First impressions of trail running/racing:
- It's a blast and even feels refreshing (as opposed to road races which can sometimes feel stressful for some reason).
- I love to climb.
- All the folks around me (including myself) inevitably walked through many (most?) of the toughest climbs. In fact, I think it would even bad strategy to to run up some of those slopes unless you're really bad-ass.
- To wit: weirdest feeling of race was passing a guy on a hill who was running while I was walking.
- Downhill is fun, but man, I must be doing it wrong b/c my knees feel like they've been hit with sledgehammers. Talked to some more experience runners after the race, and they suggested to shorten my stride, lean forward, and basically... more »

Went to pay our respects at 1 Infinite Loop this evening. Brought a card, a candle and an apple.

I'm glad we went, but am now feeling nervous about leaving the apple: it wasn't a McIntosh and I'm pretty sure Steve would NOT have approved of our decision to leave it anyway.
