Any help with an ID would be appreciated.
Although the twisted branch resembles a Sydney Red Gum (Angophora costata) I think it may be a Eucalypt that has been stressed to grow in this unusual way, possibly due to another nearby tree falling onto the tree when it was younger.
This was in a location that isn't easily accessible and stood out to me as I arrived at the top of a steep incline. It probably has only ever been seen by a handful of people and possibly never photographed - so I took the opportunity to have a quick stop in passing to grab a photo with my iphone (plus I needed to catch my breath after climbing the hill).

Just in case anyone is wondering, this ladybird was very alive and active. I don't believe in euthanising or slowing down insects for photos although I appreciate that some insect photos that we get the pleasure of seeing wouldn't have been possible without some interference. My daughter and I captured 10 ladybugs from the frangipani tree in our yard and took them inside with one flower for the photos. This little one was constantly walking around the flower and I waited until it approached the tip for the shot. My trick was to stand the flower upright in a tray of water with some plasticine around the stem, assuming the bugs would avoid the water. Mostly they did bu... more »

A pair of whispering Yellow Ladybird (Ladybug) Beetles found on a Frangipani plant in my yard yesterday. I'm not sure what they were saying but there was definitely some sort of secret being shared as they stopped for a moment at the tip of a petal.

I'm more than a little disappointed in my efforts for this week's #p52bw13 Transportation theme. I struggled with motivation and opportunity to put in the effort I would have liked. The challenge to actually take a planned photo of a form of transportation in the literal sense is something I looked forward to when the theme was announced and I failed in that. I did have the theme in mind during the week and snapped a few photos from my car as I was travelling around. This is one of those shots and since nothing better eventuated it is all I have to offer. Got Eggs?
A few suggestions to make use of those spare hard-boiled eggs this Easter time:
1. Eat them.
2. Get creative with some April Fools' Day pranks.
3. Persuade the neighbour's Free-Range Cats to relocate themselves away from the native birds in your backyard.
4. Try a science experiment with your children or grandchildren.
For example, the Egg in Soda/Vinegar/Orange Juice Experiment as a way of helping explain the benefits of brushing your teeth regularly.

Happy Easter
A portrait of my daughter with our new pet rabbit, Bop. We've had him for just a few days now. Behind the cuteness lies a bit of a mischievous streak that needs to be sorted out in a hurry. Yesterday evening he managed to chew through the power chord on my wife's computer, tripping the safety switch and sending the house (and my computer with unsaved photos and work) into darkness :( Hopefully the singed whiskers will be a lesson to him but I suspect future visits inside the house might require stricter control.

I've decided to start an album called "Other People's Art. My Interpretation" as a place to share photos that I consider fit into this category. I'd like to credit the original artists where I can but I know that's not always possible. Identifying the original artist from a work of art can be tricky but a little research can go a long way. I often see photographers very concerned about the misuse of their own photos (rightly so) but also many photos based on someone else's art without credit to the original artist. What's good for the goose....

My initial plan this afternoon was to try some photos of the near full moon which rose about an hour before sunset. As I left work I had no particular location in mind but as I started driving I got it in my head that I would like to take the photos at Munmorah National Park about and hour and half away. As I arrived at the location I had in mind I was disappointed to see that the moon over the ocean was behind cloud and the light wasn't so great. I drove on to a different place nearby and managed a couple of shots of the moon as it came out briefly from behind the clouds to the east. It was quite dull and drab so I gave up the idea of getting the shots of the moon over the coast as I would have liked. As an Analytical Chemist working in a Laboratory, in a job where details matter and millimetres/millilitres/millivolts make a difference, it could be said that we get paid for certain OCD type behaviours, to be Anal even. This is a study of just that. Parts per million, parts per billion. Add H2O and adjust to volume. Shake. Rinse. Repeat.

Behind this here post lies a digital file. I make no claim that the reduced size vertical orientation image used within my "Posts" stream or your "Home" stream will have any appeal. Most children, when shown a picture of a tree and asked "What's this?", will say "It's a tree". But it's not a tree, is it? It's a picture of a tree. This is a digital photograph of parts of a tree. Parts of a Banyan Tree. I like Banyan Trees. I don't like small digital images. They lie.
A Banyan is a fig that starts its life as an epiphyte (a plant growing on another plant) when its seeds germinate in the cracks and crevices on a host tree .
Older banyan trees are characterized by their aerial prop roots that grow into thick woody trunks which, with age, can become indistinguishable... more »
