Lake Superior State University 2013 List of Banished Words
http://www.lssu.edu/banished/current.php

The list, compiled from nominations sent to LSSU throughout the year, is released each year on New Year's Eve. It dates back to Dec. 31, 1975, when former LSSU #PublicRelations Director Bill Rabe (RAY-bee) and some colleagues cooked up the whimsical idea to banish overused words and phrases from the language. They issued the first list on #NewYearsDay   1976. Much to the delight of word enthusiasts everywhere, the list has stayed the course into a fourth decade. Through the years, LSSU has received tens of thousands of nominations for the list, which is closing in on its 1,000th banishment.

This photo I took from ISS looking down into the eye of Hurricane Isabel in 2003 reminds me of this photo taken yesterday of a storm system on Saturn!  http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2012-375
In both cases you can see smaller vortices breaking off from the central wall of the storm.  The one on Saturn is of course much much larger.  It would be amazing to see that with your own eyes from Saturnian orbit!

New in the mobile app: support for Google+ pages

Today we're rolling out v3.2 of the Google+ app to Android and iOS; both versions include one of our most highly-requested features: support for Google+ pages. This gives page owners the ability to post, comment, and interact with their followers directly from their mobile device.

Additionally:
- The Android version includes an updated widget, and a new 'Find People' experience.
- The iOS version adds iPhone 5 and iOS 6 support, and the ability to edit your posts.

The new app is available now from Google Play (http://goo.gl/xaxMx) and the App Store (http://goo.gl/RVv2S), so give it a spin and let us know what you think!

There’s some interesting detail related to this picture of Ghizo (left), Kolombangara (center) and Parara islands in the Solomon archipelago taken with a film camera by an astronaut living and working on the International Space Station on April 4, 2007, just two days after an undersea earthquake left devastation in its wake, hitting Ghizo particularly hard. Late last month, scientists began a series of night dives to study bioluminescent marine animals in the recovering coral reef system. On a moonless, stormy night, on a dive off Ghizo, they were able to observe and collect luminescent tonguefish about 120 feet off Kennedy Island, a speck of beach nearly invisible in this image. It was a moonless, stormy night in August 1943 that Lt. John F. Kennedy led a group of survivors through these seas from the burning wreckage of their patrol boat to Kasolo (Plum Pudding) Island, a speck of beach nearly invisiblei... more »

Krasnodar is where he first dreamed of flying in space as a small boy, and where today, the people he describes as warm and hardworking are struggling with the aftermath of extraordinary rain and devastating floods. *The Russian people will observe a day of mourning tomorrow, Monday, July 9, 2012.* +NASA astronaut Dan Burbank took this picture when he was commander of the International Space Station, while he was following the return to Earth of Mike Fossum, Satoshi Furukawa and Sergei Volkov.
