Sattler's line of questioning was inexcusable and I don't for one second think he deserves a 'walk' for such blatant idiocy, but the fact that he's sacked while Kyle Sandilands is still gainfully employed by Australian broadcasters is the biggest farce in the Australian entertainment industry.

Kyle Sandilands has demonstrably done infinitely more damage and caused far more offense - repeatedly - and he's still getting paid to do it. He's an embarrassment to Australians, and he has no right to be a public broadcaster or spokesperson of any kind.

The imbalance is appalling. What are your thoughts?

I am writing a proper bio tonight which is just way not fun. I got as far as 'Hey! I'm Ash' ...and then I started scribbling. This beanie came all the way from +Nikki Cartlidge in London (thank you!) and has been worn on many heads. Here it is on mine!

See? Tangents. I'm great at them. Bio! Okay okay - all about me... in the third person, because apparently that's classy now. It used to be a sign of mental instability, and I hate it when my 7yo does it. But I can talk about me in the third person, sure.

Finished! This piece is just for me - something fun that has been floating about in my head. Or rather: merciless haunting me from the murky depths. Or rather: waiting for me to dip a toe in the water, so that it can devour me whole and digest me like a sarlacc¹. Regardless - I finally jumped in, and here it is.

Watercolour is a real test for any pigment ink; 99% of the linework here is done before working with watercolour - so that's a real testament to ArtLine Drawing System pens: absolutely no bleed, ever.

A little teaser of a rather large piece I'm finishing off tonight to send off to the fine people at ArtLine, who have been very encouraging and supportive. They recently sent me over a lovely care package of Drawing System pens and Columbia Copperplate pencils with a little note saying:

"Dear Ashlan · Thank you so much for submitting your art to us. Although we do not offer sandwich-based sponsorship (and indeed have never heard of such a thing) - we do hope these supplies will keep you at it for a little while. Keep scribbling!"

Nota bene ~ no, they did not truly write that stuff about the sandwich-based sponsorship. I didn't have the gherkins to ask. But they have been wonderfully supportive! And i won't need to be buying pens any time soon;)

Taken in the Southern Highlands NSW, early in the morning just after the dew had risen. After a very chilly night, the bees were all very busy in the warmth of the early sun. With a little preparation and a lot of patience (and not a single sting!) I managed to get a few decent macros of busy bees doing their thing.

These were taken for +Chris Mallory who recently celebrated a birthday:) Thanks Chris - no prizes for identifying this critter; although 10 years from now; who knows. Maybe they won't exist any more huh?

Jasmine doesn't like this one o.O She thinks the cap looks like a beard, so it comes across as Snow White crushing an angry little gnome-child with a beach ball.

I can spend hours walking around a paddock, surrounded on all sides by rolling hills & mist-drenched eucalyptus, and I still usually come home with a camera full of macro shots. I get completely caught up in the delicate beauty and intricacy of those things that we assume are hard and brutal and permanent. They usually aren't at all.

Close up, lichen and moss were dragging this fence down. The wire itself looks like fabric, layers of it stripped away by years of rain and extreme temperatures.

· Time away from time · Southern Highlands, NSW

+Yoon-Mi Kim and I spent a lot of wonderful time on West Australian beaches, but also visited the Southern Highlands in New South Wales for some serious R&R in a place where time (and nearly everything else) is pretty much irrelevant.

This private property is regularly open for garden tours (by arrangement) and has a gorgeous artists' studio. Free range chickens lounge about providing eggs for fresh omelette breakfasts, and literally acres of garden provide a myriad of places to rest and relax. It is a complete sanctuary which I am very lucky to be able to escape to and call 'home' from time to time!

+Yoon-Mi Kim should be landing back in London any moment, so I think I might open a beer and see how she's doing:)

Sydney · a quick update from the road, we're in NSW lounging about in the Southern Highlands. Managed to get an hour in Sydney before we left, and snapped this while enjoying a cocktail beside the harbour. Sydney really comes to life after dark; it's a whole new place.

One of the toughest challenges in any relationship (as partner, parent, sibling, friend or lover) is to endure the rough and ugly moments. Life is not the movies where the only moments we will ever share are those well-parcelled little moments of perfection. There is a whole heap of less than delightful stuff that goes on too, and ultimately they are what make those other moments so wonderful.

It is a lesson I am learning as a parent, and one that is so much more powerful than I ever imagined. The opportunity to sit beside my daughter when I'm less than happy with something she has done; to hold her hand and remind her I love her, even if I'm not very happy with something. Yesterday was my first "day off" after a long stretch of night shifts and I intended to spend it super focussed on scribbling. But around mid-morning I decided to restring my guitar, which (of course) then required a bit of playing. A piece of something I had half-written years ago came to mind, so I put that with something else and a few lyrics that have been half-formed in the back of my mind for a while, and ended up writing a song.

...Well, I had nearly written it when this little coffee-coloured cat came tramping around my back yard. My neighbourhood is seething with homeless cats, which the council don't want to know anything about. This one wasn't skittish though; he peered through my windows & back door. So I decided to follow him around and take some photos.

Two White Walkers

This morning's quick warm-up scribble. The morning temperatures are dropping quite quickly in Perth (Southern hemisphere!) at the moment. I was taking my 7yo daughter to school; and she remarked that it's quite chilly. I replied in all my ill-advised geekiness:

"Yes, I think we can declare this long glorious summer over at last."

She didn't get it. March 31, Game of Thrones returns. And not a moment to soon.

When it comes to PC/smart phone security, I do believe that we are getting smarter about the risks; more wired into how to spot potential malWare and problematic 3rd party apps. You have to admit, it is pretty chic to know your stuff these days. The geeks are finally inheriting, right? Right :)

For the nay-sayers however, Krebs' article should be enough to wake people up to this idea: you own your devices, and you own the right to choose what you install & use. Part and parcel of that is the need to ensure you're informed. You own all of the risk, too. Bad decisions made by the EU do not equal bad device development!

The truth about quitting

Here's just a small selection of the things I've told myself in the past, so that I don't have to go through with quitting smoking entirely:

"I'm doing really well. One or two won't be so bad, really. I can have just one or two. I'm much better at that now. I'll make a pack last me a whole week. I can do that, easy!"

"...I feel sure I can quit now, I've proven it to myself. I'll have just one to celebrate, and remind myself why I hate it so much. Just one."

"I had better have one, because soon I may literally hurt someone if I don't. And it wouldn't be my fault. I just picked the wrong time to try to quit, that's all. Next time I'll plan it better, I know I will."

A huge change to the Google Plus Profile

There are some changes currently rolling out over Google Plus; most noticeably the profile 'cover image' which has been increased (optionally) quite dramatically. The change has rolled out over profiles and pages, and also effects the mini-profile (ie mouse-over +scribblegraph)

Assuming it's permanently an optional display element, it's a great piece of new design from Google+. It's certainly a very attractive new profile for artists of all kinds; what are your thoughts?

The lessons I learnt in the last month of 2012 were invaluable. One is: take ownership of your dreams, and don't let people influence them for the worse. Another is: always make sure you do what you say you will. This thank you t-shirt means a lot more to me now than the day I drew it:)

If you didn't order one and you'd like one - I did get a very small amount as spares (various sizes) - first in first served. +Alida Brandenburg has already claimed one of the smalls, I think! I'm exceptionally happy with the print, it was worth doing it myself after everything else fell through - the t-shirts are pre-shrunk 100% cotton, and they are a beautiful fit.

More news - after much wailing & gnashing of teeth, I finally own the dot com domain! I feel like a real boy now!ww... more »

· Nannup Music Festival ·

A last minute 600km day trip to Nannup with +Johann Wiens to catch some great music in the Australian country side. I think Johann really didn't know what to expect, but it was a great day! Full of very typical Australian things:

· No mobile reception, so EFTPOS terminals didn't work, making buying tickets/food etc impossible once we were there.
· the ATM at the pub ran out of money before midday
· Lots and lots and lots of beer:)

We were lucky enough to spend some great time with Melinda and Simon of The Falls, and Jack Carty - thanks so much guys!

I had to do a mad and slightly tired dash back up tot Perth to start work at 7:30am, but I managed to catch a bit of Emma Louise playing on the main stage. And we made it home by 3am without seeing a single kangaroo in the headlights which isal... more »
