Researchers at colliders in Japan and China have discovered the first particle made of four quarks!
Until now, observed particles have contained only three (such as protons and neutrons) or two (such pions and kaons). Finding a quartet expands the ways in which quarks can be snapped together to make exotic forms of matter.

This was a few years back, but it's still cool and even more interesting to actually see. Scotch tape being peeled away from the roll will make x-rays in a vacuum. Their scintillator is activated visibly. It would be nice to know what material it is.

Majorana fermions again! I like dark matter theories that attempt to use simple, known physics instead of new exotic fields and forces. In this case, dark matter is hypothesized to be anapole Majorana fermions. Not very far fetched, and best of all, experimentally verifiable or falsifiable.

Damn! Snowden's girlfriend's identity has been revealed. I hope she doesn't get targeted by idiots with no sense of decency or shared humanity. Although, I'm afraid that's just what'll happen. For once, I hope the internet proves me wrong.

Wolfgang Rindler and the Rod vs. Hole Lorentz Contraction Paradox

If a Lorentz contracted rod travels over a hole smaller than it's un-contracted length, does it fall in? Wolfgang Rindler, (picture 1), pointed out the answer in 1961. Dr. Rindler is my new favorite author for the week. His papers are paragons of clarity. Rather than immediately bogging down in formulas or complicated jargon, he spends a significant amount of space in every paper explaining the problem and its solution in everyday terms. Then, almost as an afterthought, he lays out the math that describes the situation. Sometimes though, you have to read into his math and then read in a little more. If anyone has a more clear explanation of the rod and hole contradiction, it would be great to hear.
