What's with the cops on horseback on Broadway? They were there last night, too. They appear to be having a great time. I think we should give every cop a horse. Their energy is much mellower. And they can still chase down  a perp. A happy cop is a good cop.

Undeclared martial law, dancing to terrorists' tune, ... and we applauded
I think I'm one of the few people disturbed and unhappy by how the manhunt was run in Boston and by how few people even questioned if any of this was legal.  Or what precedent we just set.

The media, who should have been loudest in questioning these actions, used the polite term "lockdown" to describe what was an undeclared martial law.  When you shut down all transportation, close businesses, tell citizens they must remain inside their homes, and bring in the armored vehicles - that's martial law.  When you search people's bags and demand their ID because they are walking on the street - that's martial law.  When you "ask" people for "consent" to search their homes by sticking your foot in the door and using intimidation and fear - that's martiallaw.  T... more »

+Laura Gibbs, a friend on Facebook posted this and I thought, wow, this is an older tradition than I thought!

Caption is:
Proverbs Illustrated by Cats (Left) - Kuniyoshi たとえ尽の内・左図

I was unable to find original on Google images search, but there were some other versions of this, mostly on postcards. I wonder if someone could find a translation of the proverbs?

If you must pay attention to just one wiseguy this week, ignore me!  I am plenty interesting... but nothing I can possibly say is as important as what Lawrence Lessig says here in this TED talk.    It is literally make or break as to whether the American Republic and its experiment can continue.

Lawrence Lessig: We the People, and the Republic we must reclaim.  DOn't yawn and assume you know about this.  Watch it.

I just did an image search on this photo, because I wanted to give the artist credit. It appears to come from here: http://visionaryartgallery.weebly.com/beau-deeley.html

Being taller than my husband, it makes me think of us! but I think the artist got her arm a little too big. She looks a bit disproportional there.

Great article! We need to do better in writing about women scientists.

<snip> Take the things that are said about a female subject and flip them around as if they were said about a male. If they sound ridiculous, then chances are good they have no business in the story. For instance, in his Guardian profile of preeminent physicist Lisa Randall, John Crace writes, “No matter how much she bends time, there’s no escaping the fact that she’s just turned 43 and that if she wants to have kids she’s going to have to get on with it soon.” No one would possibly write such a thing about a man of her age and status... </snip>

<snip>In the spirit of the Bechdel test, a metric that cartoonist and author Alison Bechdel created to measure gender bias in film, I’d like to propose a Finkebeiner test for stories about women in science. The test could apply toprofiles of... more »

Letter from the CCC* Chancellor's Office in my work mailbox:

"...students who have accumulated 100 or more units...by fall 2014 will lose priority enrollment."

YES!!!! Now can we just kick the perennial adult-day-care moochers to the curb? Why did this take so long? Why can't we do this NOW?

Every time I see one of these people, I want to say, "Get off my campus. You're taking the place of someone who needs an education!" We have a whole group of old-timers who have been gaming the system for decades. I'm going to print out the press release and hand it to the one who bothers me the most. Sweet, sweet, deliverance from his presence.

It is interesting to me how the demise of Google Reader is sparking such an intense discussion of what makes it so worthwhile. It seems to me that even though this is very painful for some people, it can only be healthy to ask these questions and put more energy into a diverse set of technological answers. Death is, after all, a necessary part of evolution.

I am really hoping that someone can tell me of some great free or very cheap software for the Mac for qualitative data analysis. I know it's out there, as a Google search reveals several of them. I am hoping to avoid spending a huge chunk of tomorrow figuring out what to use. Anyone? #CAQDAS

"The Relic of the LMS
The invention of the LMS (Learning Management System) was a mistake. And here I'm not going to make the same frustrated argument made numerous times before now that LMSs are limiting structures, that their interface and functionalities control how teachers teach online (although those things are true). The LMS was a mistake because it was premature. In a world that was just waking up to the Internet and the possibility of widely-networked culture, the LMS played to the lowest common denominator, creating a "classroom" that allowed learning -- or something like learning -- to happen behind tabs, in threaded discussions, and through automated quizzes. The LMS was not a creative decision, it was not pushing the capabilities of... more »

Google Sets
Give it two examples, and Google's spreadsheet can make a list of almost anything.

Create a new spreadsheet in Google Drive, type mazda in A1 and honda in A2 (the first column), highlight the two cells and then press Ctrl (or Option for Mac) while clicking and dragging the small blue box from the lower-right corner to select additional cells where to place the Google Sets results.

Yesterday +TechCrunch  reported that if you make a spreadsheet in Google Drive (Google Docs, formerly), enter and highlight the names of two beers, and pull down on the corner of the spreadsheet cell while holding Option or Control, the app will automatically fill the following cells with the names of other beers. The information is pulled, seemingly, from nowhere. It doesn't just work for beer, car brands, colors, states, or websites, as reported, but justab... more »

Our college has an "Annual Outstanding Women Student Awards" program. In light of the fact that women are, in fact, overrepresented on college campuses and men (specifically, on our campus, black and Hispanic men) are actually the students who are most in trouble, why do we still have such a thing?
