Posted my first blog post ever! It's kind of a companion piece to +GoodCTZN and hints at some of the motivations behind why I started working on it! If you can, please give me an up-vote on hacker news and spread this around :)

About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse. At the time I didn’t think much about it. But my voice never fully recovered. So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis. This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly. Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold. It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.
While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord. But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.
Fast forward to last summer, when the same pattern repeated itself... more »

The world loves Richard Feynman. Richard Feynman is dead.
Richard Feynman would have turned 95 today. My favorite Feynman story is from his time at Los Alamos. As he was working on the Manhattan Project. He would spend his free time picking locks to alleviate his boredom. After he discovers a hole in the wall of the top-security compound one day, he would walk in through the front gate, go out through the hole, then walk in again through the front gate. After a few times doing this, he almost got himself arrested by the MPs.
The world doesn't know his address, but he'll be getting plenty of these kinds of tributes today.
In June of 1945, Arline Feynman — high-school sweetheart and wife of the hugely influential physicist, Richard Feynman — passed away after succumbing to tuberculosis. She was 25-years-old. 16 months later, in October of 1946, Richard wrot... more »

The new +Fitbit Flex is out! I haven't liked any of the other "bracelet" activity trackers because they're bulky and ugly — this one has a more appealing aesthetic though. Seems to get a pretty positive review all around!

Introducing the Hangouts Capture app: snap & save moments as they happen
Google+ Hangouts bring people together, and when they do, all sorts of awesome can unfold. Maybe it's reading a bedtime story to your grandkids across the country. Maybe it's taking a cooking class from your kitchen. Or maybe it's answering questions from your constituents. We hear lots of great stories (http://goo.gl/ENWXo).
The challenge, oftentimes, is capturing your favorite moments as they happen, so today we're introducing the new Hangouts Capture app. With it you can take pictures of your Hangouts-in-progress, including a number of features not available in the usual screenshot workarounds:
- Once you’ve opened the Hangouts Capture app, you can snap photos of your Hangout view with a single click
- All photos are saved to a shared album, visible only to other H... more »

"If you're an unreasonable person, trust me: the time it takes to find the best of something is completely worth it. It's better to have a few fantastic things designed for you than to have many untrustworthy things poorly designed to please everyone. The result--being able to blindly trust the things you own--is intensely liberating."

National Geographic has created a Tumblr with rarely shown images from their archive. They also hope this helps identify the original date or location of the photos, since many are missing that information.

Some profile & page improvements, per your request
We spend lots of time listening to your feedback, and today we're launching some profile and page updates that you've been asking for. These include:
- A new tab for your Local reviews. In addition to your photos, +1's and YouTube videos, there's now a place for all your Local reviews. Highlight your favorite restaurants, or hide the tab completely via settings -- it's completely up to you.
- An easier way to edit your info. The 'About' tab now consists of separate cards (like Story, Places, and Links) -- each with its own prominent edit link. As always: you can share specific fields with specific circles, or keep them just for you.
- Bigger cover photos, with a better aspect ratio. Cover photos are much larger than before (up to 2120px by 1192px), and they display in 16x9... more »

In this photo series Russian photographer Murad Osmann is taking the viewer on an intimate journey together with his girlfriend who’s leading him around the world. The pose is almost the same in every picture: the girl never shows her face, and the guy almost never lets go of her hand. The settings change from Moscow to London to Venice to a number of different locations in Russia, revealing their passion for travel.

Memory is hazy but it was briefly a blue Nissan Altima followed quickly by a red T-top which I think was a Nissan NX. My dad is a mechanic so there was a pretty steady rotation of vehicles. #myfirstwheels

"Modeled after classic European paintings, Gekas' series of portraits of his daughter are stunning. The pictures would have us imagining that his daughter was posing for oil paintings instead of in front of a digital camera."

I finally got access to my Twitter archive [1]. I've been using Twitter since 2006 — and it's amusing to go back and see how inane my updates were back then. Seems like I mostly complained and made coffee. But, there's also a curious kind of earnestness and optimism about my tone; snarky, for sure, but also interested in everything going on in those earlier, heady days of the social web. I mean, none of us knew that Twitter would turn into a global phenomenon, but we had sense that there was something enduring about its ability to capture little human vignettes in a starkly simple medium.
Anyway, looking back over my archive, there was one tweet [2] on August 23, 2007 that was different than the rest — and yet looking over the month-to-month visualization Twitter provided, you'd never be able to spot this needle in the haystack of my 16,072 tweets:
how do you fee... more »
