How the price of paint is set in the hearts of dying stars
Today I’m going to try to explain the real reason that barns are painted red: nuclear fusion. And yes, this is an excuse to take a mad ride around some of the stranger corners of physics and chemistry in order to give you the real, this-is-not-BS, answer to a simple question.
This question got stuck in my head as a result of an episode of a long-forgotten sitcom called Head of the Class, about a high school class full of smart kids. (Sort of like Welcome Back, Kotter in reverse) This being an American show, it’s obligatory to occasionally emphasize the superiority of the ordinary virtue of “plain folk,” so in one episode the protagonists face off in some kind of academic contest with kids from a rural school, and end up losing because their city-slicker knowledge can’t answer the question “why are barns red?” (And ... more »

Looks like the Google I/O session descriptions are up!
Unlike 2012—when I videobombed +Chet Haase and +Romain Guy during their stirring rendition of “What’s New, Android (Woah, Woah)” to talk about notifications—this year I’ll have a session to myself. We’ll be dipping into Daydream, a fun new platform feature quietly launched late last year with Android 4.2.
Hope to see you there! (Or if not, then in the YouTube comments after the videos are posted.)

I just received an Android user interface question from a +Markers user:
“I really like Markers, but there's one user interface flaw in the app that I'd like changed. When ever I press on back button on my Nexus 10, expecting it to undo my latest drawn line, it instead exits out of the app, causing me to lose my drawing.”
OK, it's not exactly a question, but it's nonetheless a good opportunity for a little #AndroidDev aside about app navigation patterns. (Edit: since there was so much confusion on this point, Markers absolutely should not clear the drawing on exit; this is a regression from previous behavior and that lazy developer should fix the bug.)
When writing an Android app that has an “undo” feature, developers must resist the temptation to wire it up to the global back button; while in certain situations it might seem like a convenient way to reuse ... more »

This open-source convenience library for using HttpUrlConnections looks really cool. Some simple examples are given below:
Perform a GET request and get the body of the response
String response = HttpRequest.get("http://google.com").body();
System.out.println("Response was: " + response);
Perform a POST request with some data and get the status of the response
int code = HttpRequest.post("http://google.com").send("name=kevin").code();

I'm not very objective here, but the opening title sequence for "The Americans" is my favorite part of that show.

Lazyweb: What is the crud that accumulates on credit cards in my wallet? What's causing it? Is there a kind of wallet or card-arrangement technique or pocket-sized fragrant sachet that will mitigate this buildup?
