I became a Chartered Accountant about 50 years ago, and believed that the field of management accountancy was a powerful driver for good. Sadly, many years later I realized that many in political and business leadership expected accountants to hide things more than they wanted accountants to make things transparent. This had a very negative impact on my career, but not on my ongoing commitment to the need for transparency.

But transparency is not enough. There also needs to be massive reform of the whole framework of metrics being used to assess the state, progress and performance of society. My initiative in this regard is something I call TrueValueMetrics Value Accountancy which uses many of the concept of money profit accountancy, but expands the framework so that the impact of economic activity on people and planet is not ignored as it is with the prevailing money based profit accountancy and... more »

Productivity improvement has been one of the keys to improved quality of life over the past 200 years. Structural changes in production processes as labor use declines and energy and equipment use increases are having major impacts on society (PEOPLE) and the environment (PLANET) while making it possible to improve PROFIT. With money metrics most productivity improvement benefits profit without commensurate improvement in people and environmental benefit.

Most people, given the chance, are nice people ... but the enviro-socio-economic system that dominates everyone's lives has an inordinate focus on creating wealth for investors and having everything else subservient to this goal. This is what has been taught at the big name business schools for at least a half century. People and planet are subservient to profit. Most people would love for this to be different, but this change is going to be difficult. I argue (as a former CFO) that when we have a better way of scoring the game of business and the game of life, then we will change the way the game is played. This essay explains in more detail:

This has been an interesting talk. I was the CFO of an international fishing (shrimp) back in the 1970s before getting involved in international development assistance (planning, oversight and evaluation). Our company did some resource analysis work for the FAO where fisheries population dynamics was in its infancy and headed up by Dr. John Gulland FRS.

I am impressed by the way data science has progressed  ... but the use of data for good decisions has a long long way to go. In my view this is a very big issue. As a professionally trained accountant, I am bothered by the world's singular focus on profit as a 'good thing' because a huge part of the important externalities that are incredibly important are totally ignored by the world's decision makers.

This is one of the most inspiring visions for the future that I have ever heard. There has been incredible progress in the capabilities of technology since I trained in the City in the early 1960s, but the use of technology has been mainly for quite limited purposes ... Peter Head's vision is for technology to be used to the fullest for the benefit of everyone without doing damage to the planet. Brilliant.

NO ... Bjorn Lomborg is arguing for a very much better allocation or resources so that the world is a better place, where quality of life is better, and where things are done better to maintain and improve quality of life.

The simplistic climate change discussion tends to get answers that our economic system cannot fund ... while the Bjorn approach gives a flourishing economy AND the resources to change what needs to change.

Good to see this material. I started off as a science student, then migrated to engineering (that included thermodynamics) before some economics and eventually accountancy. I have worked in the corporate environment to improve profit performance and also in international socio-economic development to improve the state of society. Now I am working to develop a practical system of value accounting that I call Multi Dimension Impact Accounting (MDIA) which embraces many of the ideas articulated in this video.

I love the idea of Doughnut Economics ... and most of what is in the 3 video series. The one big thing that is missing from my perspective is some clarity about radical reform of the business and socio-economic metrics that are pushing almost everything in a profitable unsustainable direction. I want to see Multi Dimension Impact Accounting (MDIA) so that everyone can become engaged in behavior change that matters

This is an inspiring piece. I am also an optimist because young people seem to understand the huge issues that have to be faced, but are not wedded to the outdated and dangerous ideas of my generation. I know how far our understanding of science has progressed and I know how amazing modern IT is compared to what was available  (essentially zero) when I finished my formal education 50 years ago. The big leaders of today are still using approaches that are from the stone age. Change is coming.

The Burgess initiative is not the only one moving forward in this space, but it is the only one that starts with the idea that the double entry accounting idea  of integration between balance sheet and operating statement should apply for value analysis as much as it should for profit analysis. This initiative also has the idea that any and all economic activities have impact on both organization and community, and both should be reporting so that society as a whole knows what is going on.

I am not sure I should be allowed into this community. I knew something was wrong when I was asked in a country that shall remain nameless 'What to you want the law to be?' As long as I can remember it seems that laws had the structure of Swiss Cheese ... all sorts of loopholes that made the purpose of the law inconsequential. My first experience of this perhaps was the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and I am sure others have had similar experiences. Dear Colleagues
One of the reasons why fossil deposits are able to be converted into useful fuels of our modern economy at really very low prices, and be money profitable is because the full cost of a fossil fuel is never brought into account. There is an implicit assumption that the fossil is not used in the process and is therefore not costed. Licences, exploration, development, transportation, refining, distribution, taxes are all part of the costs, but the actual consumption of the fossil is ignored.

Add in the replacement cost of the fossil and the profit and the economics changes. This does not happen with money profit GAAP accounting, but it would happen with TrueValueMetrics.

I believe with some passion that when you measure the right things, you get the right results. In the energy sector we need to start measuring the right things.

Double entry money accounting was invented almost 500 years ago in the days of sailing ships and merchant adventurers. The market economy is something Adam Smith wrote about and published in 1776. GDP was invented in haste in the 1930s as a stop-gap metric in the Great Depression. Seems to me it is time for some modernization of the metrics being used for business and the economy, including the area of social enterprise. My proposal is something I call TrueValueMetrics

The Occupy chant 'the whole world is watching' is pretty much true with the exception of the mainstream media in the USofA that is being shown up for what it is ... a disgrace to the journalism profession. I am appalled at the state of the US society and economy, which has been getting ready to go over the cliff for about 40 years. In the 1960s I was able to earn more in 1 month in the USA than I could in the UK. A young friend lost his job when Bear Sterns imploded, and 3 months later he got a good job in India. The folk that make the big decisions about the USA need to wake up ... and we the people (99%) need to hold these decision makers accountable

My close friend posted this on Facebook:

"I kept helicopters in the air in Iraq (for over a year of my life, in my youth) for Casualty Evacuations that needed to happen in Iraq -- NOT in the United States.

"I'm literally shaking right now. I'm beyond pissed at what unfolded in Oakland, and what will continue to unfold in all of your favorite cities if this doesn't get the attention it deserves.

"This shit is happening in your back yard right now, and these people are protesting things that you're too lazy to do anything about.

"Whether you agree with OWS or not, the situation in this country is BEGGING for you to pay attention to it. It needs your research. It needs your voice.

"Open your eyes and narrate your own world. Stop letting people narrate it for you."

The 9/11 remembrance is poignant, but let us not forget those that keep getting killed and maimed round the world because of hate and terrorist actions.
