Alister Macintyre7,220This is a circle of people who discuss Legal Implications of things, might be good resources to communicate how to deal with emerging challenges like in the #MayasVoiceApp replacement effort.2012-06-15 04:04:251531003
Alister Macintyre7,220My copy, of this circle of people interested in our Economy and how come it is in a mess, is over 600 people, but I can only share 500.  Some day, I will split the people here into smaller circles of secondary interests, or maybe installments.2012-06-15 03:15:52501314
Alister Macintyre7,169Here by request of one of the people in it, is my main circle of people who share G+ Tips from time to time.  It includes both people who generate them, and people who use them.  Also see this other related circle. https://plus.google.com/u/0/108007903544513887227/posts/XfV7Xek2XK3  People are in one or the other or neither.  Drop me a comment if you want to be in one of these circles.2012-06-13 03:13:14184102
Gregory Esau9,648My Community Intelligence CircleI use the term community here pretty broadly, in that my community, the global community, and G+ all blur together in ways that make boundaries somewhat meaningless. Therefor, this is my Community Intelligence circle. Reading and engaging with these people will raise your intel (so to speak) of the world around us, the world of Google Plus, maybe your world, and the dots that connect them. For the many people who have circled me over the last few months (and thank you!!), these are the people that raise my IQ and EQ.2012-05-31 23:58:0014220210

John Kellden4,057Great Google Plus PeopleWorth Waiting For. I've thrown every heuristic and the kitchen sink into this, pondering from a great many angles, with the intention of creating a shared circle that is nothing other than mindblowing. You won't get instant fame, fortune and world peace by interacting with this bunch of people, but pretty damn close. This is like an online portable, accessible, interactive Chautauqua. And then some. Enjoy!2012-03-17 15:45:4949913914

Rob Gordon13,043Entrepreneurs & Freelancers. This is my circle for self described Entrepreneurs and Freelancers - which includes the self employed, small business owners, independent contractors, small startup companies and pretty much anyone trying to make it outside of the traditional economy. As I said before, I don't want to pretend that this list is definitive or even close to being complete. There are millions of entrepreneurs on Google+ and there are many circles of entrepreneurs that have already been shared - these are just the ones I have curated in my own circle. This probably doesn't even include everyone in my own circles who are entrepreneurs or self employed as it is almost impossible to go through everyone's profile. Just let me know if I have inadvertently left you out - I will be posting this in the circles database sometime soon. Feel free to reshare, but as with any shared circle, I do recommend some discretion in adding a circle of this size to your stream. This one might be a little different in that it doesn't include too many of the "celebrety entrepreneurs" that are common in other shared circles here- though there are a few. For the most part hese are real small business owners or people or with an entrepreneural mindset, and there are lots of smart people here. #entrepreneur #smallbusiness2012-01-06 22:47:1539942514
Gregory Esau1,267I'm sharing today the Glia circle community, that in ways big and small, are part of the social and intellectual capital we need to Take Back Our World. We share the traits of knowing how to build awesome community here in Google Plus, that every day here build up awesome knowledge and shared understanding with excellent posts and dialogue, that understand we have enormous challenges facing us now and into the future, and are part of this growing community, growing movement that wants to be part of the solution. It's an amazing group of people, and I hope you'll want to join us!For more on how we started on this journey to Take Back Our World, you can read here:https://plus.google.com/u/0/115633934578783827271/posts/ASBr6LUJEHsPlease share!2012-01-06 14:50:21361554

Gregory Esau87An enhanced version of my previously shared circle of "World Intelligence" . If there is anybody else that you feel should be on here... maybe even you!!...please let me know. This is what I call my "World Intelligence" Circle. The purpose of this circle is that collectively, they give us a enhanced understanding of the world...and this included our Google Plus World!!...we live in.Our collective goal is to build on this circle, to constantly improve the diversity of views, and depth of knowledge, so we can 'crowd source' better ways to both understand the world in which we operate, but in turn lead in this world, to make it a better place for all of us. This Circle falls roughly into six categories:1) Economics and Economic Systems2) The Internet and Social Technologies3) Politics and Global Politics4) Science and Technology5) Religions and Spirituality6) Environment and Ecological Systems. These all inter-relate in one way or another, and it has long been my view, to understand our world, we need to constantly learn, and collaboratively share our knowledge around these 'systems'. None of us individually can 'know' or 'understand' the world, but as a collaborative enterprise, we can develop better knowledge for better leadership.2011-12-11 00:07:392393212
Virtual Brain Trust Cooperative440Virtual Brain Trust Cooperative Circle. This is being posted mostly as a thank you to the people who have followed our new Google+ page. In the brief time since we set this up, more than 400 people have added it to their circles and are following our posts. Clearly something we are doing has inspired, or at least intrigued, a good number of people here. We really appreciate this vote of confidence and will continue to explore ways we can use a bit of the extra brain power we all have to help each other. These projects will be announced on the VBT Google+ page, so be sure to add that to your circles if you have not yet done so, and also on the network we are building at http://VirtualBrainTrust.org. Some of our more advanced projects will be lauhched on that site, so please consider adding a profile there if your interest is more than casual. It is possible this may be one of the last times we are able to share this circle - we are getting close to Google's 500 member limit and shared circles have limited utility for what we are doing anyway. Still, there are some great people to follow here, They all believe in the spirit of cooperation and have offered to at least consider using a bit of their extra brainpower - their skills, intelligence and creativity to help other people. If you are looking for people who are both smart and considerate, this is a great place to start.2011-12-09 16:58:254291798

I became a Chartered Accountant about 50 years ago, and believed that the field of management accountancy was a powerful driver for good. Sadly, many years later I realized that many in political and business leadership expected accountants to hide things more than they wanted accountants to make things transparent. This had a very negative impact on my career, but not on my ongoing commitment to the need for transparency.

But transparency is not enough. There also needs to be massive reform of the whole framework of metrics being used to assess the state, progress and performance of society. My initiative in this regard is something I call TrueValueMetrics Value Accountancy which uses many of the concept of money profit accountancy, but expands the framework so that the impact of economic activity on people and planet is not ignored as it is with the prevailing money based profit accountancy and... more »

This has been an interesting talk. I was the CFO of an international fishing (shrimp) back in the 1970s before getting involved in international development assistance (planning, oversight and evaluation). Our company did some resource analysis work for the FAO where fisheries population dynamics was in its infancy and headed up by Dr. John Gulland FRS.

I am impressed by the way data science has progressed  ... but the use of data for good decisions has a long long way to go. In my view this is a very big issue. As a professionally trained accountant, I am bothered by the world's singular focus on profit as a 'good thing' because a huge part of the important externalities that are incredibly important are totally ignored by the world's decision makers.

We live in a complex worlds ... the tools for decision making are not up to the challenge.

This is one of the most inspiring visions for the future that I have ever heard. There has been incredible progress in the capabilities of technology since I trained in the City in the early 1960s, but the use of technology has been mainly for quite limited purposes ... Peter Head's vision is for technology to be used to the fullest for the benefit of everyone without doing damage to the planet. Brilliant.

2 weeks ago kurtilein3 said ... 'he is a global warming denier. i hate him for that.'

NO ... Bjorn Lomborg is arguing for a very much better allocation or resources so that the world is a better place, where quality of life is better, and where things are done better to maintain and improve quality of life.

The simplistic climate change discussion tends to get answers that our economic system cannot fund ... while the Bjorn approach gives a flourishing economy AND the resources to change what needs to change.

Good to see this material. I started off as a science student, then migrated to engineering (that included thermodynamics) before some economics and eventually accountancy. I have worked in the corporate environment to improve profit performance and also in international socio-economic development to improve the state of society. Now I am working to develop a practical system of value accounting that I call Multi Dimension Impact Accounting (MDIA) which embraces many of the ideas articulated in this video.

I love the idea of Doughnut Economics ... and most of what is in the 3 video series. The one big thing that is missing from my perspective is some clarity about radical reform of the business and socio-economic metrics that are pushing almost everything in a profitable unsustainable direction. I want to see Multi Dimension Impact Accounting (MDIA) so that everyone can become engaged in behavior change that matters

This is an inspiring piece. I am also an optimist because young people seem to understand the huge issues that have to be faced, but are not wedded to the outdated and dangerous ideas of my generation. I know how far our understanding of science has progressed and I know how amazing modern IT is compared to what was available  (essentially zero) when I finished my formal education 50 years ago. The big leaders of today are still using approaches that are from the stone age. Change is coming.

The Burgess initiative is not the only one moving forward in this space, but it is the only one that starts with the idea that the double entry accounting idea  of integration between balance sheet and operating statement should apply for value analysis as much as it should for profit analysis. This initiative also has the idea that any and all economic activities have impact on both organization and community, and both should be reporting so that society as a whole knows what is going on.

I am not sure I should be allowed into this community. For maybe 25 years I have equated 'rule of law' with the legalization of obscene behavior by rich and powerful interests whether in the United States or around the world. I knew something was wrong when I was asked in a country that shall remain nameless 'What to you want the law to be?' As long as I can remember it seems that laws had the structure of Swiss Cheese ... all sorts of loopholes that made the purpose of the law inconsequential. My first experience of this perhaps was the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and I am sure others have had similar experiences. I would love to know more about the rules and regulations that apply to banks, and the activities of banks that choose to ignore the rules because you can make more money profit that way, even if you have to pay small fines ($ billions but still small) once in every 20 years or... more »

Dear Colleagues
One of the reasons why fossil deposits are able to be converted into useful fuels of our modern economy at really very low prices, and be money profitable is because the full cost of a fossil fuel is never brought into account. There is an implicit assumption that the fossil is not used in the process and is therefore not costed. Licences, exploration, development, transportation, refining, distribution, taxes are all part of the costs, but the actual consumption of the fossil is ignored.

Add in the replacement cost of the fossil and the profit and the economics changes. This does not happen with money profit GAAP accounting, but it would happen with TrueValueMetrics.

I believe with some passion that when you measure the right things, you get the right results. In the energy sector we need to start measuring the right things.

Double entry money accounting was invented almost 500 years ago in the days of sailing ships and merchant adventurers. The market economy is something Adam Smith wrote about and published in 1776. GDP was invented in haste in the 1930s as a stop-gap metric in the Great Depression. Seems to me it is time for some modernization of the metrics being used for business and the economy, including the area of social enterprise. My proposal is something I call TrueValueMetrics

I have wanted to look at the files of various branch banks on the Community Reinvestment Act ... and not surprisingly the bankers have not made it easy. This is interesting and a matter of great concern

The Occupy chant 'the whole world is watching' is pretty much true with the exception of the mainstream media in the USofA that is being shown up for what it is ... a disgrace to the journalism profession. I am appalled at the state of the US society and economy, which has been getting ready to go over the cliff for about 40 years. In the 1960s I was able to earn more in 1 month in the USA than I could in the UK. A young friend lost his job when Bear Sterns imploded, and 3 months later he got a good job in India. The folk that make the big decisions about the USA need to wake up ... and we the people (99%) need to hold these decision makers accountable

My close friend posted this on Facebook:

"I kept helicopters in the air in Iraq (for over a year of my life, in my youth) for Casualty Evacuations that needed to happen in Iraq -- NOT in the United States.

"I'm literally shaking right now. I'm beyond pissed at what unfolded in Oakland, and what will continue to unfold in all of your favorite cities if this doesn't get the attention it deserves.

"This shit is happening in your back yard right now, and these people are protesting things that you're too lazy to do anything about.

"Whether you agree with OWS or not, the situation in this country is BEGGING for you to pay attention to it. It needs your research. It needs your voice.

"Open your eyes and narrate your own world. Stop letting people narrate it for you."

An animated version of a Lytro light field picture of technology journalist Walt Mossberg (all light field pictures have parallax information). I took this picture while on stage doing a tech demo at AsiaD in Hong Kong. Oct 20, 2011.

Special thanks to the master of animated GIFs, +Dunken K Bliths, for tips on how to embed successfully.

I am glad the 'Occupy' movement is spreading into a lot of different communities. Eventually it is quality of life in all of our communities that matters.

This is a must read for anyone who has any interest whatsoever in a world beyond the failed capitalist market economy and its singular focus on profit, GDP growth and more and more waste!

Not sure whether it is the rocket or the photography that WOWS me the most!

This video of a massive rocket blasting off from Earth is incredible.

The really amazing footage (where the rocket takes off) starts around 2:15 — the first couple of minutes focus primarily on the setup.___Not sure whether it is the rocket or the photography that WOWS me the most!
