Only a few days left so come along and check it out at Shed 5, Wellesley St Auckland from 8am until 3pm daily and open until 8pm on Friday night.

Half of the images were taken in the wild and half at Auckland Zoo. This was to bring attention to the great habitats and conservation projects as well as to show the photographic opportunities available on our doorstep.

A mystical fog layer sets the scene...

Still on my drive home from Rotorua after my Nikon presentation and the sun had now been gone for around twenty minutes. The sky was glowing brightly and an amazing very low lying layer of fog shrouded the ground giving the trees the impression of floating on clouds.

All of these spectacular opportunities made for a long but happy drive home (see earlier posts for other images)

This image was taken at the Auckland Zoo as part of my project for "A Year In The Wild life of Chris McLennan" exhibition. I sat with my camera focused on the back of his head for over an hour and a half before he turned and gave me a 2-3 second glance before turning and walking off. I felt privileged to have captured his "smile".

I left Rotorua late yesterday afternoon after giving my presentation at Harvey Normans national Imaging Conference - "bringing back the passion". Leaving town I drove through very thick fog... As I approached the area near to Fitzgerald Glade the fog subsided and I was treated to an amazing vista of misty layers of farmland, trees and hills as the setting sun peaked through a gap in the clouds.

I used a long lens to help "compress" the layers in the scene and and give the sun the dominance it seemed to be demanding!

Rotorua sunset, New Zealand.

Last night as I drove into Rotorua the light faded and a subtle pink glow crept across the sky. It called for a quick detour down to the lake on the way to my hotel.

I loved the tranquility with the distant float-planes and the foreground ducks all resting for the evening....

"The tuatara is a reptile that is endemic to New Zealand which, though it resembles most lizards, is part of a distinct lineage, order Rhynchocephalia. The two species of tuatara are the only surviving members of its order, which flourished around 200 million years ago. Their most recent common ancestor with any other extant group is with the squamates (lizards and snakes). For this reason, tuatara are of great interest in the study of the evolution of lizards and snakes, and for the reconstruction of the appearance and habits of the earliest diapsids (the group that also includes birds, dinosaurs, and crocodiles).

Off Road Cave Safaris "meet the locals". The passing rain showers give the location a mystical feel.

I spent the day shooting the new Off-Road Cave Safari - "Take The Road Less Travelled" trip from Sigatoka to the Naihehe caves, Fiji.

Naihehe means 'a place where you can get lost'.

The journey gives an amazing insight into Fijian life the way it has always been as well as the opportunity to explore the caves.

Notable for their massive size and unusual natural characteristics, these caves were once a fortress for a cannibal tribe and still contain a cannibal oven and other reminders of this.

I really liked the simplicity and stark contrast of this very Chinese red and black sign and door knocker.

Nanxun, Zhejiang province, Southern China.

Nanxun is a tranquil village set at the crossing of two waterways. They are the Shihe River is from north to south, and that of the ancient Grand Canal from east to west.

Apparently the sign says "DANCE".

An early morning glimpse of the Southern Alps across Lake Matheson, South Island, New Zealand.

After a long drive South from Moira Arch we arrived into Lake Matheson at 4am... took a 30 minute nap and walked around the lake and waited for the early morning fog to lift.

It was a stunning and tranquil scene, framed here with the native New Zealand forest.

I chose the small aperture to allow me to create the sun star.

Toetoe in the wind. Waikaremoana. New Zealand.

The backlighting made the toetoe stand out dramatically from the dark background.

The use a a small aperture and the inclusion of the sun gives a very pleasant sun star. The idea to look at this scene as a black and white came from Lisa, one of my students :-)

On this recent Photo Tour around Lake Waikaremoana I had the opportunity to use the new Nikon Coolpix A - and what an impressive little camera it is! A pocket sized compact camera with true DSLR level specs and performance.

Whilst on the subject of "magic arms and gaffa tape" and reminiscing about my Alaska adventures here is another dog sled shot.

Here I was working with my good friend Jon Korta and his dog team.

I mounted a DSLR with a 14 mm lens to the sled using a Manfrotto magic arm. I then used a Hahnel remote control to fire the camera from my snow machines whilst I followed the dog team through the forest near Galena in the heart of Alaska.

Getting organised to head down to the Photographic Society of New Zealand's National Convention to give a talk on travel photography and the tools that I use in the course of my work.

Here is a glimpse of daily life in Kundiman Village on the Karawari River in Papua New Guinea's interior. Life is simple here, no electricity, cellphones or internet - but lots of play, swimming, hunting, fishing for Piranha in the river and the gathering of sago which forms the local villagers staple diet. The silence of the remote wilderness is only interrupted by the laughter of these amazing people.

One of the many great locations on the hike up to the Korokoro Falls.

This image was created during my last week's photo tour in the Te Urewera National Park, North Island, New Zealand.

I loved the look of the spreading fern and the way it leads into the background scene. I positioned my camera low and very close to the fern and made this my focal point. Even though I was shooting at a reasonably small aperture the background has a slightly out of focus feel helping create depth in the image. The slow shutter speed has also enabled me to achieve the dreamy effect in the flowing water.

Well done to Steve Crichton for guessing the Nikon A as the camera that took this image. Steve, your prize is on it's way!

It is very impressive considering the Nikon fits in your pocket and most people were guessing the image was taken by the D800!

This little gem really does shoot DSLR quality images. It sports a 28mm (equivalent) prime lens and a 16MP Nikon DX format DSLR sensor!

I shot this image in aperture priority mode with matrix metering and the settings were:

ISO 100. f22 for 1/2 second.
