A brilliant speech by +Philip Plait from TAM 2010. Something to think seriously about for sceptics like myself. I admit I am prone to 'be a dick' at times when dealing with impossible people but it is indeed not the right way. If we are to win the hearts of people we need to be nicer than some of us are.

The Amazing Four-way Symbiosis.

The other day I was watching BBC's Secrets of Our Living Planet, a recent documentary that had me glued to the screen. It talks about the complex relationships we can find in all kinds of animal habitats all over the world and this particular one, an amazing symbiosis of four different species - a tree, a rodent, a bee and an orchid - impressed me more than anything else.

The Brazil-nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa) is one of the tallest trees found in Brazil and a few other South American countries towering at a height of about 50 metres. It is also one of the most economically important plants in the Amazon as its seeds produce an oil which is used in a wide variety of products. These seeds are long and angular and between 12 to 25 of them are usually enclosed inside the tree's large and round fruits which typically are about 10cm... more »

How many books have been published in the world, ever? This is just one random question sprang up in my head and according to Google it's about 130 million. These are separate titles, not copies. I thought it must have been more taking into consideration that this is all the books ever published.

Please consider voting for Educate Lanka.
I don't usually post 'emotional blackmail' stuff in G+, but this really is a worthy cause. If you feel like it's worth the hassle please cast a vote for Educate Lanka which will result in them getting a good grant. So far they have been doing a real good job.

While stumbling upon things on StumbleUpon I found this really cool list of sci-fi novels. I haven't read most of them but it really does look like a good list.

Dear friend / stranger,

I am trying to compile a set of astronomy related questions for a quiz for high school students. While they may not have a deep understanding of astronomy, they are enthusiasts, and also they have a good general knowledge of Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. I would greatly appreciate if you can help me compile a few questions (about 20 or so). However I have a few guidelines listed below.

1. They are for a verbal quiz, hence they need to be short (can be answered within 30 seconds or so) and preferably without having to do any calculations.
2. Again, since it is a verbal quiz, these need to be questions with definite answers. For example, while a question such as 'how likely is life elsewhere in the cosmos?' is undoubtedly fascinating and intriguing, they are not the ideal type of questions for a verbal quiz.
3. As stated in thep... more »
