Wow.  This is incredibly cool.

Try a search like:

And see photos you took of the Golden Gate Bridge.  So cool.

Google Translate – We've been busy

Hope none of you missed some of our recent launches over on Google Translate.

Two weeks ago we launched a new language, Khmer
This week we upped the ante and launched 5 new languages, Bosnian, Cebuano, Hmong, Javanese, and Marathi

Not only new languages, but new features too!

Our Phrasebook feature now syncs to Translate for Android, allowing you to save your favorite translations on desktop, edit them if you need to fix up a translation, and sync them to your phone for when you need them later.

Also, Translate by Camera input on Android has now been launched in 16 more languages.

Enjoy!

Ellie's First Day #throughglass

Hi - I am Ellie (short for Eleanor) and I was born today (5/1/2013) at 1:38 AM.  According to some sources, Eleanor means "light".

My proud daddy would love it if you would take a photo of the sunset tonight (or the sunrise tomorrow) from wherever you are in the world and post it using #elliesfirstday or email it to me at elliesfirstday@gmail.com along with your location (e.g., Atlanta, GA).

My daddy wants to make a book of sunsets and sunrises from all over the world on my first day of life.

Yesterday we added Khmer to Google Translate—our 66th supported language. Khmer is a tricky language for translations systems in part because words in Khmer aren't traditionally separated by spaces; that means not only do we have to teach our system a new language, we also have to teach it to separate words. Khmer in Translate is is in alpha, so it will be useful in some situations but not all, but we're working on improving it. Read more about how you can help on the Translate blog: http://goo.gl/rsjk9

Ever wonder what some Googlers do in their spare time? +Tom Murphy VII  likes to create programs designed to learn how to play classic video games. Recently, during the 2013 ACH SIGBOVIK 2013 conference (http://sigbovik.org/2013/), Murphy (also known by his alias Tom 7) revealed his AI program designed to automatically play many old Nintendo Entertainment System games.

In his paper “The First Level of Super Mario Bros. is Easy with Lexicographic Orderings and Time Travel … after that it gets a little tricky” (http://goo.gl/akUCf), Murphy details the process by which his programs deduce the right objective function by analyzing a human player’s inputs to a game. The assumption made is that successful progress, or “winning”, consists of the lexicographical ordering of certain memory locations (i.e. score, level, number of lives, character's x position on screen, etc.)increasing.  ... more »

Excitement through Glass

I've had the distinct pleasure of wearing Glass for a while now.

One of the most fun parts of that has been talking with people who see me wearing it and can't hold back their excitement.

A common interaction:
    "Is that Google Glass?"
      "It sure is."
"Is it awesome?  What does it do?"
"Absolutely.  Can I take your picture?"
    "Sure!"
      "Ok Glass.  Take a picture."

Below is a collection of some of those pictures.

I hope all the new Glass Explorers have as much fun wearing Glass in the coming weeks as I have so far.

New TV?
Recommendations?

Hey all you smart Google+ people.  My Mom is looking to buy a new TV.
What should she get?

Things she wants:
- 50-55"
- very thin TV
- very thin edge
- ability to watch Hulu Plus
- ability to use it for Google+ hangouts (probably by adding a camera)

Of course working for Google, I'm in favor of +Google TV, and the LG TVs with built in Google TV seem pretty nice.

It seems like a lot of TVs today are trying to up-sell folks with "smart" features and internet features, but from my past experience, the software on TVs and Blu-ray players and the like is often pretty terrible, and these features are rarely something usable.

The best approach for me has still been to hook a laptop up to my TV.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Things to look out for?

Thanks!

+Unbound MEDLINE  Search Strategy of the Week
This week I'd like to show how Unbound Medline can be used to deliver medical information in multiple languages.  Most medical research is published in English which may hinder the delivery of information to non-English speaking medical care providers. The +Unbound MEDLINE  android app allows you to share citations with +Google  translate, and in doing so helps to  break down language barriers.  Here's an example of how it can be used.

Worldwide, South Africa has the largest number of people living with HIV (est. 5 million).  It also has 11 official languages so sharing of  medical information can be a challenge.  Let's do the following:

1. Open the Unbound Medline app in android, click the "Clinical Search" tab and search: HIV

Google Translate
Introducing our New Input Tools

Considering the vast number of ways that users type in our 65 supported languages, we are pleased to announce the integration of Google’s new input tools in Google Translate. We have always allowed you to choose among alternative input methods, but your choice was limited. For example, only one of four popular input methods for Chinese was previously available. Our new input tools greatly expand the set of available input methods for many languages.

San Francisco 2013 January – Ingress Status Report

Back in mid-December, I began monitoring the status of the power struggle back and forth between the Resistance and the Enlightened.  I shared what a week of battle looks like in SF: http://goo.gl/tn48T

With the coming of the New Year, things were looking bad for the Resistance. The city by the bay was being shaped more and more, day by day, and we worried Human-kind may have been lost to the Enlightenment.

But the Resistance fought on, fought strong, and has managed to turn the tide.

This time-lapse shows the entire month of January 2013, as the city progressively became more and more blue.  We know the Enlightenment will come back strong.  But we're proud to have pushed them back and slowed there progress here.
