Just got back from watching Star Trek Into Darkness with the family. If you are a person who watched and loved Wrath of Khan, you'll mostly like it but be filled with rage for about 20 minutes. If you didn't see Khan, you'll mostly like it but be a little confused by the emphasis certain scenes receive.

So...I just bought a second Chromebook for work (the Acer) and just discovered that Google won't honour the 100GB of additional storage because I've already used it for this account. My understanding was that it was a per device allotment...anyone have any experience with this?

So , first thing I noticed about the new layout for Google+....it works so much better than it used to on a Chromebook. No more laggy scrolling :D

Good news! Auto correct on Android phones is far less invasive than it used to be. I no longer send angry "Duck you!" messages to assholes trying to lowball me on Kijiji.

So, after a few weeks with the ARM Chromebook, I'm satisfied that I can use it as a daily driver. Which means it's time to slap ChrUbuntu into my old Series 5 550. Does anyone have any idea if there's a version of 13 that will work, or should I just use the tried and true 12.04?

If you're a veteran Chromie, this probably isn't for you...remedial stuff ahead

I noticed today that the numbers keep jumping in our little community so I thought I'd help some of the new folks with a list of my absolutely indispensable extensions and apps that have made having a Chromebook function as a daily driver possible for me.

1.Allow Right Click-Provides a context menu on pages and images that would normally be blocked.

2. Adblock-ethically dubious...but I hate ads, especially before youtube videos.

3.Attachments.me-automatically saves attachments to either Dropbox or Drive

4.Awesome Screenshot

5. Checker Plus for Gmail-Notifications and replies for you gmail accounts. This one will be going by the wayside as soon as the new rich notifications in Chrome OS work universally, but for now it's a goodw... more »

TWO WEEKS WITH THE BLACKBERRY Z10

For the past 5 years phones have been both my dominant mobile computing tool and my most excruciating and annoying pain. My very first smartphone was a BlackBerry Pearl, which I used until the little scroll ball fell off. I loved it but, at the time, there wasn't a whole lot to compare it to. The iPhone had just come out, but it wasn't anything special yet; no app store, couldn't multi-task and, if you weren't already a die hard iPod/iTunes user, it's only real distinguishing feature was the touchscreen, which was, admittedly, brilliant. Especially when compared to the stylus dependent offerings from Palm and Windows Phone.

But then my little BlackBerry broke and, after having a mild tantrum at the fact that there were no BB Storm's available for my carrier at that time (I don't even know why I wanted it, I just had... more »

Discovered a trick today that may seem obvious, but for new Chromies might be helpful. If you've got significantly more Drive space than local SSD (on a series 3 for example) navigate to Settings -->Show Advanced Settings -->Downloads and switch the download folder from local storage to Drive.

Presto. Everything is automatically saved to the cloud.

So my new and shiny Samsung Chromebook arrived today...

And I immediately noticed a couple of drastic differences between this new iteration and my old Series 5.

THE GOOD: The ARM processor absolutely destroys the Atom chip in my old beast. Pages render faster, scrolling is smoother and videos tend to load faster. I was also happy to see Bluetooth functionality added; finally, I can listen to music in peace without relying on shitty wired earbuds.

Designwise, the new Chromebook is sleeker and lighter, but they jettisoned a couple of features that I really loved on my old machine. Which brings us to...

THE BAD : This is a flimsy piece of kit compared to the Series 5. It doesn't feel ludicrously cheap, but it's nowhere near as sturdy as its predecessor. Also, gone are the all day battery and the world class keyboard of the original.... more »

Dear Microsoft: I've been happily paying for Music Pass for the past few months. I do so because I live in Canada, where Spotify deigns not to go. I pay the 9.99 a month subscription because it is the only music service available up here in the Great White North that not only lets me stream whatever tracks I want to but also lets me download them to local storage on any Windows 8 device.

Except, apparently the XBOX 360 where, if I want access to this service that I already pay for, I also have to shell out another 10 bucks a month for an XBLA Gold membership.

Excuse me? Oh and it's the same situation if I want to use the Netflix app (which I already pay for) or use the XBOX movie service to may Microsoft for streaming movies or TV episodes. All these things, incidentally, I can do for free from my PS3 as part of the default setup.

Why does anyone put up with this?... more »

The result of my Android vs Windows Phone week (original post here: https://plus.google.com/114925490671861484384/posts/DwgGMcKW8Wg)?

I wound up ditching both and picking up a BB Z10. It has most of the features I love in Windows Phone (great contact and messaging unification, at a glance notifications etc.) with two huge improvements; an awesome notification center, and the ability to run Android apps as well as native fare.

Win.

I'm happy to report that Flash is no longer broken in the Modern UI version of IE10. One of my big beefs during the short time that I had a Surface RT was having to edit the Flash whitelist in order to play videos on 90% of the sites I visited. 'Tis now no longer an issue, at least not on the Surface Pro.
