Today I got a card replacement mailed in by my bank. They do that on occasion, so I didn't think too much about it until I noticed it had some funny new waves drawn on a corner.
It turns out this card has built-in NFC, in addition to the chip and the mag stripe. Now if only they got rid of the stripe...

After branching off and tagging the code for the impending +CyanogenMod 10.1.0 release (and the recent RC1) last week...

As everybody knows, Android 5.0 was recently renamed Krispy Kreme, since the +CyanogenMod people had such a large contribution and an overwhelming love for donuts. We're disappointed we couldn't replace Bugdroid with Cid, but at least we get to fully support the laprohig (aka "the X") by the time it launches at IO.
We had to fully ignore the Galaxy S4 to concentrate on it, but it was totally worth it. Andoid KK will blow your minds.

If this turns out to be right, I'll be very happy.
+CyanogenMod 7 was one of our best (if not the better) series in terms of reliability and scope. A lot of that was due to the skipping of honeycomb, and the extra 6 months we got to fine tune the codebase. Getting the same opening with jellybean would be a welcome breathing space.

So there.

So... I can't run Facebook Home on a Nexus 4, or a Nexus 7. I can, however, run it on a Nexus Q, or an Optimus G (running basically the same software as the N4).
Cool filters, bro.

LG Optimus 4X HD
One more newcomer to +CyanogenMod !
The 4X uses the same bootloader unlock procedure as the L9 (possible on stock version v20a and newer): type adb reboot oem-unlock , and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
While you're in fastboot mode (and after unlock), flash a CM-compatible recovery image. +ClockworkMod recoveries are, as usual, tested and recommended, and available from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager (or the ROM Manager app, which should now recognize the model)
CM10.1 builds are, of course, at http://get.cm/?device=p880

Clearly an example of things Google gets wrong; can't they see the crowds demanding phones bigger than their heads so they can hide from awkward social situations?
What use is a smartphone if it can't be used as a food plate, with complimentary reusable chopsticks? (And makes a water sound when the sashimi touches it)

Optimus G time
Since the FreeGee unlock tool now works in the international/european version of the LG Optimus G (E975), it can get some +CyanogenMod love. +ClockworkMod recovery also supports it, either by direct flashing or through ROM Manager.
The recoveries are available at the CWM site: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.0-e975.img
And CM10.1 nightlies are live at http://get.cm/?device=e975

So, to put my money where my mouth is: Below is a screenshot of the stats data collected by CM. This is the corresponding line in our stats database:
'E39983A14C92B657893E3805DEEC078D','e975','10.1-20130402-UNOFFICIAL-e975','10.1-20130402-UNOFFICIAL-e975','pt','26803',1,'2013-02-17 02:25:21','2013-04-04 08:51:13'
Now, by all means... tell me something relevant about myself or my device from that data. Or how CM can use it to kick my puppy. Or something.

Unlocking the LG Optimus L9
The L9's (p760) update to Jellybean from LG started rolling out today. It has a ton of new stuff for people who are interested in keeping the stock ROM, and another new thing that's of interest to us: the bootloader is now unlockable.
How?
Step 1 - After installing the JB update (I don't know if there are any leaks, but it so avoid them. The real update is out), make sure you have a SIM in your phone and let it stay on for at least 30 continuous minutes. This is important!. If you skip this step, you may end up with a permanently locked device.
Step 2 - Enable USB debugging in the developer options, and run " adb reboot oem-unlock " from your PC
Step 3 - You'll land at a confirmation screen like the one in the first photo of this post. Read it, and follow the instructions there.
Step 4 - If... more »

CeBIT 2013 & CyanogenMod
CyanogenMod has just been awarded the CeBIT 2013 "Best Open Source Mobile App for Inclusion and Accessibility".
We are honored to receive this award, and though we aren't strictly an 'App', we pride ourselves on our community involvement and recognize that encouraging a community approach to CyanogenMod's development has been one of our greatest strengths. Whether it's ideas, code, translations, documentation or bug reports, the Android community offers a nearly unlimited supply of folks willing to help us make a better product.
We want to thank CeBIT 2013 for the award and inviting us out to the event. Though we could not all make it out to Germany, +Sven Daw was able to attend and accept the award in person from Klaus Knopper (creator of Knoppix, and recent CyanogenMod convert).

Programmer Interrupted
The most thorough study to date that uses a variety of techniques to gauge the cost of interrupting a programmer:
pupillometry
subvocal utterances
tracking eclipse and visual studio typing frequencies/patterns.
High level takeaway:
A programmer takes between 10-15 minutes to start editing code after resuming work from an interruption.
When interrupted during an edit of a method, only 10% of times did a programmer resume work in less than a minute.
Definitely worth reading.

XBMC on the Nexus Q
As I mentioned in a comment for another post, +XBMC is currently undergoing extensive work for native video acceleration in Android. I was about to post my own build (which works on the Nexus Q's OMAP4), when I noticed they have just posted a build based on the same patchset (it's theirs, after all :) Great job, guys!)
So... http://mirrors.xbmc.org/test-builds/android/xbmc-20130118-d2c78f5-android-hwaccel-armeabi-v7a.apk . I've tested this build on Qualcomm S4, OMAP4, Exynos4, and Tegra3, all of them on CM10.1, and got accelerated video on all. Go get it :)

CM 4 balls
+CyanogenMod 10.1 support for the Nexus Q is now live, and as far as I can tell fully functional. The only caveat is that the original @home functionality does not work, and at the moment it's unclear if it ever will.
Installation of the device is simple, but possibly awkward due to the lack of normal input mechanisms. Treat it like any other Nexus device: Boot into fastboot mode (with adb reboot bootloader ), unlock it, flash the recovery from http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-6.0.2.7-steelhead.img , etc. Basically, follow the same procedure as other Nexus devices ( The N4's instructions from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_mako will do in a pinch).
Navigation in recovery is done with the Q itself: rotate the ball to navigate the menus, and tap it to select an item. Navigation inside CM can be d... more »

I'm thinking about leaving pink as the default light ring color in CM builds for the #NexusQ... :-D

2013-01-13 17:11:08 (23 comments, 5 reshares, 138 +1s)
So... I was messing with the Nexus Q LEDs, and suddenly noticed the CM boot animation spins at almost the same rate as the Q's booting LED. And the color is the same!

Yet more ODROID-U2
# Graphics composition is now properly vsync'ed
# hardkernel's fix for the disappearing-on-reboot Ethernet is applied
# A recovery mode is now part of the base install. reboot recovery works.
# Now with working camera (any UVC webcam should work. Tested with hangouts)
# Audio input (the on-board mic) has been fixed
# The HDCP problem that caused green screens when the TV was turned off was fixed
Get it from http://cyanogenmod.org/rc/bootstrap-cm-10.1-20130105-odroidu2.zip
Note: Since the installation now includes the more familiar recovery mechanism, this will be the last emmc-flashable build. Once this is installed, the regular "Install zip option" in recovery will work, so I'm switching to regular zips. Nightly builds (and CM OTA updates) should start happening soon(ish).
