Landscape Photography Show12,708*Landscape Photography Show #46: Fill the Frame* "Fill the Frame" is often the first advice given to a beginning photographer.  That's what we will focus on in this event.  For landscape photographs, that can be done in one of two ways.  1. Do it with through the viewfinder.  Move yourself to the proper location and angle or zoom in/out if your camera does this until you get a pleasing image that "fills the frame".  You don't want any extra space or elements that will distract from your composition.   2. Crop your photo to eliminate that meaningless extra space that doesn't contribute to your composition and eliminate distracting elements. *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have "Filled the Frame". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located?  What were you trying to achieve?  What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?   We want to know the details about your photograph. THE COMMENT IS REQUIRED. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don't have complete EXIF data will be removed.  Others will learn from seeing what you have done. 3) Only ONE photograph per person is allowed.  If you submit more than one photo, all of your photos will be removed. 4) Circle the @114888971165518552849 page. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, July 27, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots from them!! 7) Curators of the @114888971165518552849 and the @105588730866970114510 theme may participate. 8) Technical Requirements: Enable "sharing" on your photo.  If it receives honors, we want to be able to share it!!  Enable "comments" on your photo.  We want to say how great it is!!  Enable "plus ones" so everyone can give it a big plus!! *Voting:* Feel free to leave positive encouraging comments on the entries at any time.  You know our photographers will love the attention.  Engage in conversation and see what you can learn!! *AFTER Monday, July 27, 2015, 10 am CDT (when the event ends) and BEFORE Friday, July 31, 2015 at noon CDT, you may add another comment and include the hashtag, #LPSFavorite LPS Event #47: Fill the Frame2015-07-20 17:00:00384

Landscape Photography Show12,708*Landscape Photography Show #46: Power Points* In the last two events, we explored the horizontal and vertical rule of thirds lines and how they divide your frame into 9 equal parts.  It's always great to set a horizon on the lower or upper horizontal line.  It's also good to place a strong element along one of the vertical rule of thirds lines. This event will focus on where the two vertical and horizontal rule of thirds lines intersect.  We call those Power Points.  There are 4 of them: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. Placing a strong element at one of the Power Points can really improve the composition, drama, and power of your photograph.  Examples:  the single red leaf on a green tree; the eye of anything wildlife, and the setting sun on the horizon.    Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Power Points are what we want practice with this event.  Show us something special place at one of the intersection points of those vertical and horizontal lines.   1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays something special at one of the Power Points.       2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us which Power Point you used: upper left, upper right, lower left, or lower right.  Explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Power Point rules, tell us why.  Also give us some information about the location and any challenges that you faced.  We want to know the details about your photograph. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    General Rules: 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, July 13, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots from them!! 7) CuratLPS Event #46: Power Points2015-07-06 17:00:00350

Landscape Photography Show12,708*Landscape Photography Show #45: Vertical Rule of Thirds* In the last event, we explored how to set a horizon using the horizontal rule of thirds.  We're continuing with this strong rule of composition by looking at the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  This event will be starting later today so you have a chance to carefully read all the rules. Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Remember in the last event that you imagined two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divided the space into three equal spaces.  Now, also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later.  For now, we will focus on the vertical lines.  Does your landscape have a strong vertical element that you want to capture?  Let's say it's a single tree.  We often like to put that tree smack dab in the center of the photo.  We may capture the tree but the photograph is boring.  Try putting that tree along one of the vertical lines separating the space into thirds.  Now the photograph has some drama and added interest.   That's what we want practice with this event.  Use one of your vertical lines to capture a strong vertical element.  Don't forget the Horizontal Rule of Thirds and Horizon that we had in the last event.  We want both rules of composition used in this event!! Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.    *1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a strong vertical element using the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  Keep in mind the horizon from the last event.*   *2.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Vertical Rules of Thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.*   *3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.* *4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.*    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. 3) OnlyLPS Event #45: Vertical Rule Of Thirds2015-06-22 19:00:00422

Landscape Photography Show12,708*Landscape Photography Show #44: Horizon - Rules-of-Thirds* Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Imagine two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divides the space into three equal spaces.  Also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later and also the vertical lines.  This event will focus on those horizontal lines. Study your landscape BEFORE you shoot.  In the viewfinder, place the horizon on one of those horizontal rule-of-thirds lines.  You will have 1/3 sky and 2/3 ground or 2/3 sky and 1/3 ground.  That composition is very pleasing to the viewer.  Having your horizon dead center is often boring and not interesting.   Horizons should be level!!  If you have sky and water, then having the horizon level is a MUST!!   If you have sky and ground, the "level" becomes more complicated.  If your horizon is very curvy with rolling hills for example, you won't have a level horizon and that's OK.  Your mind's eye knows that hills aren't level.  If your horizon is the boundary between sky and land and only a slight hill, you're mind's eye won't find it appealing when looking at the photograph of that view because the horizon isn't level.   You can trick your mind's eye by adding a vertical element to the composition that the viewer will "know" is vertical such as a tree.  You might put that vertical tree on one of those vertical rule-of-thirds lines.  Your mind knows that the tree is vertical and won't mind an unlevel horizon. Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.  You might try getting added drama with 10-20% sky and 80-90% ground or vice versa.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a horizon using the horizontal rule-of-thirds.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the horizontal rule-of-thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.  Feel free to leave comments and discuss on the main event as well. *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) *You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don'tLPS Event #44: Horizon - Rule of Thirds2015-06-08 17:00:00587

It's #sciencesunday  ! To celebrate, here is another shot taken during my recent visit to the wonderful Capillas de Marmol (known as the Marble Caves, literally Chapels), eroded by the lake. So what is Marble and how is it created? WikiPedia knows:

"Marble is a rock resulting from metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks, most commonly limestone or dolomite rock. Metamorphism causes variable recrystallization of the original carbonate mineral grains.

The resulting marble rock is typically composed of an interlocking mosaic of carbonate crystals. Primary sedimentary textures and structures of the original carbonate rock (protolith) have typically been modified or destroyed.

Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of a very pure (silicate-poor) limestone or dolomite protolith. The characteristic swirls and veins of many colored marble varieties are... more »

Northcol camp in September, Mount Everest. Those who complain about the crowds on Everest have never been there or are to lazy to go in quiet season. We were the only team on the mountain at this time of year :)

Everest Nepal Basecamp. This is already 9 years ago, but it might give a clearer view of the disaster that happened last week.

You will need to see the original 400mp 360 Panorama for the details, but the destructive avalanche that killed several climbers came from the icefall on the 'V' shaped bit of the ridge leding right from PumoRi, the white peak on the right third of the image.

Who says you need a wide angle for landscape shots? This image of a partially burnt Araucaria forest near Villa Pehuenia in Northern Patagonia was shot handheld with @ 400mm focal length on a 7DII body, so effectively 640mm.
I love the ability of the long lens to separate a small part of the scenery from its surroundings.

Preparing for some more Patagonian photograpy, I edited last year's photo of El Chalten (the original name of Mt Fitzroy). We only saw the mountain just before it got engulfed by the clouds (minutes later). It would not reappear (and only briefly) until many days later.

Who is interested in a real Patagonian photo/travel adventure?

Just stumbled on this HDR photo in the archives. The mountain in the back is Ama Dablam; even though it is not the highest by far (it is less than 7000m), it is one of the most beautiful mountains on this planet. You can see one of the many small Nepali Sherpa hamlets, the Khumbu valley leading to Mount Everest on the right.

Northcol camp in September, Mount Everest. Those who complain about the crowds on Everest have never been there or are to lazy to go in quiet season. We were the only team on the mountain at this time of year :)

Look +Wray Post , it says I used a Nikon ;-)

It has been a long while since I shared some new photos here! I am currently redesigning a website and will surely encounter some images to be shared. Somehow it seems that my main album is not visible on my profile, at least I could not see it myself!

Can anybody else? Just in case, here are some past highlights :)

It's #womenwednesday ! I am re-editing some older pictures and wanted to share this one with you.

This little girl suddenly crossed our path when we were on our way to the wonderful Swayambunath temple complex in Kathmandu (mixed Buddhist & Hindu). There was a curfew due to the Maoist problems and the streets were empty. But this little girl did not mind politics, outdated idealism and human stupidity in general and was playing with her sister and brother.
She was interested and posed, though only for a split-second, but somehow I could not capture her innocence, cheerful expression and gorgeous eyes as I wanted. The next hours I had that familiar nagging feeling when you did not shoot that picture that you wanted to or could have…

Much later, we walked back and I went to look for her. I found her house, and she posed again, though she could barely stand still as she was full of energy, but I think I managed to get a little bit of her youth on ‘film’, before the ‘real world’ might take it away.

Visit Nepal if you can, the people are so wonderful and they need the tourism.

Laila Peak, Hushe Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan , Pakistan

Located at N 35° 35′ 28.4136″, W 76° 26′ 33.1008 in the Pakistan Karakoram range, Laila peak is 'only' 6096m/20,000ft high. But it is one of the most impressive mountains in the world, though seldomly climbed.
It has a distinctive spear-like shape. Its northwest face has a slope of 45 degrees in more than 1500 vertical metres.

It has been climbed by Simon Yates, among others. According to the local people in Hushe, Laila peak has been climbed only twice, a total of only seven people have summited. It was climbed in winter for the first time last month by Spanish mountaineers Alex Txikon and José Fernandez, though they could not reach the actual summit.

It's #sciencesunday  ! To celebrate, here is another shot taken during my recent visit to the wonderful Capillas de Marmol (known as the Marble Caves, literally Chapels), eroded by the lake. So what is Marble and how is it created? WikiPedia knows:

The resulting marble rock is typically composed of an interlocking mosaic of carbonate crystals. Primary sedimentary textures and structures of the original carbonate rock (protolith) have typically been modified or destroyed.

The characteristic swirls and veins of many colored marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or chert which were originally present as grains or layers in the limestone.

Green coloration is often due to serpentine resulting from originally high magnesium limestone or dolostone with silica impurities. These various impurities have been mobilized and recrystallized by the intense pressure and heat of the metamorphism."

You have to step out of line to get a new perspective on things.

+Wray Post recently shared a great post from +Scott Kelby where Scott mentioned that his wonderful picture of a road above the clouds "could not be good as it was shot with a 6mp camera, in jpg on a crappy tripod".

I am raising (lowering) the bar with this image, shot from my first digital camera (not a phone, a real, non-dslr digital camera), the Minolta DimageX, with a whopping 1600x1200 (2mp!) resolution (image is resized but uncropped)! So, yes, I assume this picture sucks as I did not use the latest CanikonZeiss :)

It is a shot of a group of climbers, ascending the final ridges of Mt Blanc, the highest summit of the Alps and Western Europe, just as the sun came up.

For me it showed me a great lesson, one I have shared during presentations, where I still use this image: Youha... more »

The Chilean side of Patagonia consisted of several isolated villages, until the dictator Pinochet made it his pet project to construct the Carretera Austral (Southern Road). Most if still unpaved and very rough, but it has opened up some of the most amazing landscapes on earth to travelers.

This shot is taken in the part El Bosque Encantado (The Enchanted Forest), about 30 miles South of Puyuhuapi. Only a few miles away are high mountains with hanging glaciers and we took a dip in the hot springs overlooking a sea-arm, while dolphins passed :)
According to a Chilean friend this section was about to be used for the filming for the Lord of the Rings movies, but logistics, technical issues and financial stimulation from NZ apparently changed that. Not sure if that story is true, but it is definitely a Hobbit-worthy surrounding...

After a great image and discussion from +Jay Patel yesterday about poverty vs happiness, I will be posting some older pictures with similar theme.

At the end of the first day of my trekking to the Nepali basecamp of Everest, I ended up in Phakding, a collection of dirty houses and low budget trekker accommodation, but with amazingly tasty food. Said before, the children over there know how to play without electricity or Internet and though very 'limited'by western standards, never seem to be bored.
I watched these kids for a long time, while they tried to break each other’s hackey-sack record.
Once I showed them their own faces on the video camera and the screen of my photo camera, they starting posing, while wanting to know everything about this amazing technology, without forgetting their play. This image is uncropped.

Curiosity, imagination and education will make good people out of these good children, I am sure. They already have the first 2, they might need some help at the latter, so take out your hiking boots and visit this great place!

But I am not sure about the choice of photos, though I like each of them separately, these 6 together might be a bit overdose in colours?
Or do you like it that way?

Here is another shot from the Marble Caves, Chilean Patagonia. It can only be reached by boat or kayak. The shots I took appeared quite dull (shot in RAW), but then I noticed all these hidden colours that were in the file.

Part reflection of the turquoise water, others sulphur and mineral traces in the marble. Added a slight Orton effect for drama :)

Well, we are back early from the mountain. Bad weather, unexpected difficulties and physical limitations made us decide that it was safer to turn back and try again next year..
So no photos from the Patagonian Icefield, but I did shoot some nearby sights including these famed Marble Caves. The edge of the turquoise lake is full of marble rocks and pillars and many caves have been eroded out of these.

It gives a strange but wonderful atmosphere  a great place to visit, in Chilean Patagonia, right on the Carretera Austral.

We are off to the Patagonian Icefield in a few moments, with an international star team :)
We have just launched a Kickstarter campaign, please check it out here:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1483298056/icy-summit-of-patagonia-adventure-on-the-northern

We have some interesting rewards for backers, from signed books to 1-on-1 skype calls if you want to know about climbing Everest, or taking pictires in Antarctica and much more!

If you can, please share as this expedition is not sponsored, we are trying crowdsourcing for the first time, so we can bring back more great images from the far corners of our beautiful earth. We appreciate your support!

I had shared a reflection image today, of Cerro Fitzroy. Here is the same image, but now I have flipped it vertically, i.e. replacing the reflection and real sides. with only a slight blur added to the bottom side.
Suddenly the rocks at the bottom of the lake (now in the sky) look like a nearby planet is crashing upon us. Still I like it this way as well, what do you prefer?
