You know how in Avatar they colonize Pandora and terrorize the natives? What if there was a movie where a a bunch of explorers landed on another planet but it was a more advanced civilization where they instantly dragged them to an immigration office, shouted at them in a language they didn't understand, impounded their ship, and forced them to fill out a bunch of legal forms for like 6 hours?

So let me get this straight... Jason Mraz writes a song clearly about how we shouldn't give up on our personal relationships, but makes a video about how we we all shouldn't give up on our fellow Christian Americans?

Why not include the rest of humanity? Just seems a little chauvinistic to me...

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on American politics

*Nebraska Teen Beaten to Death for being "Gay"*

Cloverfield, Nebraska-- Fifteen year-old, Gay Stephenson, died yesterday evening after doctors struggled for almost three hours to treat assault wounds inflicted by several unknown assailants. Recent evidence suggests that the incident may have been nothing more than an ignorant hate crime.

"Gay wore a name tag everywhere he went," says his girlfriend of six-months, Stacy Wainwright, "He started doing it a couple months back cause he thought it was funny, but even after the joke got stale, he just stuck with it."

Well, it seems nobody's laughing now: three blows to the head with a baseball bat, stabbed twice in the lower back, five broken ribs, and bruises from head to toe.

*Prometheus Explained*

Ridley Scott's Prometheus asked way more questions than it even attempted to answer leaving some viewers scratching their heads. So allow me to try and explain the core of the movie without falling into any of Lindelof's plotholes.

The Myth - Prometheus created man from clay and suffered eternal damnation for stealing fire from Mount Olympus.

The Movie - Essentially, humans become Prometheus with the invention of androids, and the small crew aboard the ship "Prometheus" (coincidence?) travels to LV-223 on a quest for fire or, rather, understanding. But they fail. In fact, Elizabeth Shaw continues the search all the way into the sequel. Her "need to know" becomes our eternal damnation.

So in order to regain favor with the Engineers, all of us must have faith in the natural order of thingsl... more »

*Thoughts and Shit: More than a Few Wrinkles in Time*

It seems the older a person gets, the more relative age becomes.  But when I see a mother dressing even more promiscuous than her teenage daughter, she might as well tattoo her birthday on top of those stretch marks. The same goes for fathers who drown their families in debt because of their mid-life motorcycle purchase. And please never catch yourself saying, "Maybe when I win the lottery." It only implies that you've given up on the things you truly want out of life; like travelling, education, and philanthropy.

So I believe the true young at heart are the ones who accept their old age, but live each moment like there's no tomorrow. What do you think?

*Thoughts and Shit: Why I don't Vote*

I don't vote, I have never voted, and I never plan on voting. The only time I actually felt compelled enough to vote was after watching "Street Fight," a documentary following Cory Booker on his grassroots tyrade against Newark, New Jersey's previous mayor/dictator, Sharpe Jackson. So I guess it's not that I don't vote, I've just never seen any candidate worth voting for. Not to mention, voting is supposed to be an informed decision. A decision that I feel is made impossible by the rampant bias in our news media and broken debate practices. And, for me, not voting makes more of a statement than arbitrarily playing eenie-meenie-miney-mo at the poll station. It says, "I don't want any of you running my country!"

So am I what's wrong with America? You tell me.

*Thoughts and Shit: Peace and Love and Stuff*

All of us at some point have taken the steps to change either ourselves or the world. Some want to lose weight, others hope to end world hunger, and a few even wish to stop caring. As is often the case, though, we undertake these initiatives for the wrong reasons. When people want to lose weight they usually do it for everyone other than themselves. When people hope to end world hunger they usually do it for no one except themselves. And when people wish to stop caring they usually do it because nobody ever paid attention.  And there lies the real problem.

No matter if we want to make a difference for ourselves or for everyone else, we tend to guage our success by the level of support we receive. And it's never about the number of supporters we have. It's always about the number of supporters we don't have. To thinkt... more »

Thoughts and Shit: Google+ = Facebook

Our differences define who we are, but tend to discriminate against everyone else. Google+ is no different. Circling revolutionizes the way we engage with eachother by allowing us to categorize the people we follow into levels of importance. In other words, we include the people we find interesting and exclude the ones we don't--just like in real life. Not to say that this is wrong, but it brings up a curious paradigm. How can we foster a community of peace and understanding when not everybody is invited? Just think about it. Everyday, our streams fill with posts on why Google+ is so much better than Facebook, and whenever someone just doesn't "get it" they're pointed back to the site from which they came.

So I challenge everyone! Forego your differences. Look for similarities! Both Google+ and Facebook love harping... more »

*Getting Lost with Dr. Who on his trip Back to the Future*
How many sci-fi references can you fit into one sentence?

I imagine the genesis of time travel spawned from a life of regret. But the more effort we spend legitimatizing time travel, the more consequences we seem to come up with to the point where the whole thing becomes futile. Like Marty McFly, there may very well be a present without you ever being born. Or as in Lost, nothing you could ever do would impact the choices you've already made. So the lesson always seems to be to just stay put. And yet, we still wonder, "what if..."

*Thoughts and Shit: What's Your Sign, Big Boy???*

Why is that when a man ignores the allure of women in pursuit of their artistic passions, society immediately dubs them as homosexuals? Bill Cunningham, esteemed fashion photographer for the New York Times, undeservedly falls prey to this thinking during a recent documentary focused on his own life-long passion.

Even Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue magazine, admits that she and "everyone gets dressed for Bill." But Bill gets dressed for no one. He wears his signature blue smock everywhere--even to award ceremonies commemorating his achievements. He lives in what some would consider a storage room, using a communal bathroom every morning, and riding his trusty bike everywhere. He eats like a miser and accepts no food or drink when on the job. He lives to work and works to live--all in an attempt to find the latestt... more »

*Thoughts and Shit: Google's Graveyard*

I remember reading the Sunday obituaries as a child and thinking  how odd it was that an entire lifetime could fit into 250 words. Ironically, our entire lives are now recorded onto servers via irrelevant status updates that often don't go beyond 250 characters.  So it's weird to think that anthropologists of the future will be working for Google and Facebook and Twitter. But will those anthropologists know who you actually were? Will they know about those butterflies you felt when you first set your eyes on the one? Will they know about how you cemented lifelong friendships during all those nights of drunken debauchery ? Will they know about the first time you split an Oreo with your grandma? Will they know... you? For me, it seems that with immortality we lose our souls.

*The Butt of the Joke*

Love, love, love +Banksy. I was first exposed to him while watching his self-produced documentary, "Exit through the Gift Shop." The movie chronicles the street art movement as told through the eyes of Mr. Brainwash, one of Banksy's closest friends, who unwittingly makes a joke out of the American art palette. And in that same vein, Nick Stern profits off of Banksy's genius but not without innocence and admiration. So who's the joke on now?

Most everyone thinks about their future, but when they do it's usually about all the things that could go wrong. The phrase "what if..." comes to mind: What if my car breaks down? *Thoughts and Shit: No Free Lunches... For Us...*

Right now we have a system in which we distinguish one another by wealth. To be fair, I think it works far better than having a class structure ruled by divine right. But it still makes me wonder: why do we choose to rank each other in society rather than put everyone on equal ground? Why can't we live by a monetary system that pays in love and compassion and happiness? Just makes me wonder who the real animals are...

*Punch-Drunk Love--An Almost Unnecessary Prologue: Part 2*

Refer to Part 1 of this series for an outline on Punch-Drunk Love's three-act structure, and take special note of how the movie's opening sequence fails to jump start the plot in any way. Most Hollywood script readers would deem this as "fluff" since the first ten minutes of any movie requires that three things be established: the main character, the dramatic premise, and the dramatic situation. Punch-Drunk Love's first ten-minutes only establishes the main character and bluffs the other two.

Main Character as Established by Prologue - Barry Egan prefers solitude but yearns for  meaningful relationships.
Main Character of Movie - Same as above.

Dramatic Premise as Established by Prologue - Barry discovers a loophole in a Weight Watchers promotion thate... more »

*Thoughts and Shit: The Pope vs. Da Bears*
Whenever I see a Tea Party rally on the news or watch the mothers at a children's soccer game, I can't help but think about the fanaticism of Christians or Scientologists or even Terrorists. Most everyone needs purpose in their lives, and I think religion gives them that. How else do you explain why some A.A. members make the transition to God so easily? I think this same idea also applies to people who play fantasy football or watch Fox News 24/7. These things just give life meaning. But what works for you may not necessarily work for everyone else. So rejoice in your new and everlasting addictions, but don't expect me or anyone else to get high with you...

*The Chicken Came First?!*

"Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" I've always felt the answer was rooted in either theology or evolution--those who chose chicken believed that God created all living animals on the sixth day whereas those who chose the egg believed that the chicken eventually hatched from a lineage of avian dinosaurs. According to people smarter than me, though, the chicken did indeed come first! So does this mean that science sides with God? Let me know what you think in the comment section below.

I doubt the Swiss could even squeeze their IKEA furniture into a space that small.

*Thoughts and Shit: Knowledge is Power... For Better or Worse*

Hello again, everyone. As of late, I've noticed a shift in the American Dream--brains have become the new brawn. "Nerd Culture" is everywhere. And everyone from Apple to Hollywood is catering to the new wave of buying power. Comic books, movies, TV, you name it. Indeed, knowledge is power! But will that power be used to create a new social class that preys on those less educated or will it try to bring everyone together on the same level?

*Punch-Drunk Love--An Almost Unnecessary Prologue: Part 1*

Audiences wrongly pigeon-hole P.T. Anderson's #punchdrunklove into the romantic comedy genre--but for good reason. The almost unnecessary ten-minute opening sequence in which Barry encounters an abandoned harmonium and a just-as-lost Lena Leonard completely throws off the entire narrative structure of the movie! Consequently, Barry's misfortunes with Dean Trumbell become set dressing to Barry's infatuation with Lena, but its Dean Trumbell's antagonism that deserves greater screen presence than Lena Leonard's damsel in distress. So take out the almost unnecessary ten-minute opening sequence, and behold--a perfect three-act structure!

Inciting Incident - Barry attempts to make friends with a phone sex operator.

Second Act Break - Barry gets extorted by the phone sex company... more »

A good opening image sets the tone, character, conflict, and/or theme of the ENTIRE movie. Refer to the still image taken from P.T. Anderson's #punchdrunklove .

The man sitting at the desk is #barryegan . He wears a blue suit. The blue suit blends in perfectly with the blue wall that wraps around him. Barry goes unnoticed by society

Barry is sandwiched between two concrete surfaces. He faces constant pressure from society

Barry hunches over his desk, weighed down by the white void above him. He is also wedged into the corner as if forced there by the audience. Barry is submissive to society

*Thoughts and Shit: Heaven or Vagina?*

I suppose the real question I should be asking here is, "What makes your thoughts on #life and #death (especially death) any more right than mine?" Nobody can say for certain what happens in death because the only people who do know are D-E-A-D!

So what I'm really interested in knowing is what YOU think will happen when you die? Or better yet, how do you cope with those thoughts of uncertainty toward the afterlife? I personally believe that I will either die young or not at all, and if I do die then I don't know... But I'm okay with not knowing. I mean, c'mon! Will we actually know if we're dead or not?!

Anyway, tons of uncertainty here. I'm going to leave it up to you guys to try and figure it all out. Just post your thoughts, share with your friends, and never be afraid to ask your own... more »

*Thoughts and Shit: "It's their own fault..."*
I remember walking through downtown as a child and seeing #homeless people on the side of the road begging for money. Rather than giving them any money, my mother would pull me in closer and veer off in a completely different direction from where we were going. And when I asked why we didn't help the guy out, my father would say something like, "Cause he'll just use the money for booze. And it's their own fault that they're there in the first place." And so I was raised on the idea that anybody could simply pick themselves up from their life on the streets and build their wealth all over again. In other words, poverty was a choice.

Thoughts and Shit: The Division of Sex
Hello again, everyone. Today's question comes from experience, but I'm sure it's an experience shared by most. I'm really curious as to why we invest so much time and effort into our #relationships only to have them fall apart, but we don't ever seem to worry about our #friendships going awry because it's just assumed that we can pick up where we last left off. Is this because we expect too much from the people we choose to live the rest of our life with? Is it because we suffocate our significant others with our close proximity whereas we only see our friends every so often? What is the big difference between our friends and lovers? #sex ? How can something so awesome not only build a loving relationship but also tear it town?

As always, please share your thoughts (I'm looking at you, +Kelline Pickett and... more »
