Bay Area parents: Send your kids to code camp!

My son +Kevin Elgan is organizing a series of one-week summer camps in Palo Alto where boys and girls in grades 3-8 will learn programming using +Tynker.

Each camper will build a game or animated story, which they and their friends can play on their phones and computers!

The camps start June 10 and continue through July.

In her quest to become a world-famous violinist, Ji-Hae Park fell into a severe depression. Only music was able to lift her out again -- showing her that her goal needn't be to play lofty concert halls, but instead to bring the wonder of the instrument to as many people as possible.

I brought this up last year on Facebook, but I thought I would ask it here this year. This is a question for those in the United States of America as it is a holiday peculiar to us. On Memorial Day in this part of Missouri we honor all the dead and not just veterans. I know from friends in Minnesota and in other parts of the nation it is that way too. Other parts of the country only seem to honor veterans. So in your part of the country, do you just honor veterans on Memorial Day or all the dead? #memorialday

What does Mars and diabetes have in common? NASA.

During the development of the Mars Viking spacecraft, researchers also developed technology to monitor the health of astronauts. This technology included a system to monitor the blood sugar of a person. The system was adopted to create a small, implantable insulin pump that monitors and treats individuals with insulin-dependent diabetes, also known as Type 1 diabetes.

This technology is now referred to as Programmable Implantable Medication System (PIMS). PIMS is the size of a hockey puck, encased in titanium shell, and holds about 2 ½ teaspoons of insulin. It is implanted into the body and delivers precise amounts of insulin over long periods of time. In November 1986, the first PIMS was implanted into a patient at John Hopkins Hospital. These implantable and external insulin pumps have helped insulin dependent diabetics leadhe... more »

Nowadays, we are confronted by a huge gap between rich and poor. This is not only morally wrong, but practically a mistake. It leads to the rich living in anxiety and the poor living in frustration, which has the potential to lead to more violence. We have to work to reduce this gap. It’s truly unfair that some people should have so much while others go hungry.

A new report on suicide in Ireland shows that suicide cases experienced a significant number (and intensity) of life events in the 6 months prior to their death.

These life events include bereavement, relocation, relationship break-up, and in the cases of the younger cases, bullying (both inside and outside the school environment) and/or having been assaulted was also evident in excess.

"Fun and interactive learning experiences are a perfect way to keep students' minds sharp during the summer break," said Leland Melvin, NASA's Associate Education Administrator. "NASA centers and other national partners offer great Summer of Innovation opportunities, but the mini-awards allow smaller, non-traditional partners to inspire students in their local communities through creative educational activities."

NASA has unveiled plans for its 2013 Summer of Innovation (SoI) program, which challenges middle school students across the nation to share in the collective passion of scientific literacy and space exploration through unique science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workshops.

The SoI program is designed to improve the skills of both American students and teachers through collaborative workshops that focus on the effect of NASA... more »

Boy Scouts vote to remove gay ban
Full story here: http://nyti.ms/10Wojgf

In a move that surprises many, the Boy Scouts of America voted today to allow gay scouts into their ranks upholding the values the teach about bravery, honesty, and citizenship. This is a classic case of good people demanding equality and showing that they won't stand behind a discriminatory organization. If you have every posted, commented, supported, +1'ed, or otherwise made your stance clear then you can attribute part this monumental step forward to your inability to settle for unequal policies.

There is sure to be controversy down the road, but take this moment to appreciate just how far we've come and how important equal treatment of sexual minorities is in America. We're moving so fast and it's so incredible.

Congratulations to all the Scouts out there. I hope... more »

New data from the Green Bank Telescope has allowed astronomers from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory to locate a cluster of hydrogen clouds bridging the space between nearby galaxies Andromeda and Triangulum.

These astronomers discovered that 50 percent of the hydrogen gas was “clumped together” into humongous blobs that would normally be indicators of dwarf galaxies but weren't for their lack of stars.

Some “hints” that a reservoir of hydrogen gas existed between the two galaxies were detected more than a decade ago, but the signal was much too weak to reach any solid conclusions about its origin or characteristics.

Now, thanks to high-resolution photos from the GBT, these scientists were able to locate concentrations of neutral hydrogen coming out of what was believed to be a primarily “featureless field of gas.

This cluster may be afuel source... more »

As many of you have probably heard by now, Cosmos is coming back to television.  FOX has just announced that, sometime in 2014, Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey, will hit the airwaves.  This time, the series will be hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson, working with original creators Ann Druyan and Steven Soter with Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame producing.  While MacFarlane may seem like an odd fit, he is actually a personal friend of Ann Druyan, a childhood fan of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, and an advocate of space travel.  He also personally provided the funding to have 800 boxes of Sagan's notes and letters preserved in the Library of Congress.  It was through MacFarlane's clout with FOX Network that Druyan was able to meet the network heads and get the series approved.

The aim of the show, much like the original series, will be to introduce a general audience to the wonders ofscie... more »

I think all of us out there play the game of “What if?” Our space program is currently going through a bad case of the “what ifs.” What if NASA doesn’t get more money for the budget? What if the Russians won’t accept the contract on the table for $70 million to train and haul our astronauts back and forth to the International Space Station? The biggest “what if” has to do with the 2014 budget for NASA. What if there just isn’t enough money to keep our manned spaceflight program alive or any other NASA program for that matter?

As we look around at other nations, including China, Japan, North Korea and Iran, they are all working on their space programs and sparing no expense in doing so. Yet, the United States is not. Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, one of the most powerful Democrats in the Senate, is asking a big “what if” concerning NASA’s 2014 budget and how to sustainthe U.S. space program.... more »
